Frugal Round Up

Same spot, new picture-ignore the pumpkin still on my porch step.
We got snow, perhaps not as much as initially predicted, but enough to guarantee a white Christmas even if we get the warming trend hinted at for later next week. DD's holiday concert is today, two performances, so before I run her over to the school a few hours ahead of the fist show, I'm getting caught up on laundry, some tidying, and reviewing our spending for the week. I had a few frugal or savings wins, and a few budget blips. Take the good with the bad, right?
  • In paying the last Show Choir fee, which I thought was going to be $125-minus $45 for fundraisers, discovered we had a $28.40 credit from last year (not sure what for), and a $10 fundraiser credit I didn't know would go in her account, so only had to pay $41.60.

  • I have a $30 lesson credit for DD's violin due to her teacher missing last week.  She had a chance to play in the pit for a theater production. While I know a lesson was missed, I think having 3 or even 2 formal lessons a month is probably adequate anyway at this stage.

  • My treat tray for my work colleagues as opposed to spending the time, and the money on individual gift bags, was a hit. I set the tray out at 1:00, and by 4:00, there was little more than a few cookies crumbs and a slice or two of pumpkin bread left.

  • Received my free LL Bean water bottle with my $10 coupon, free shipping, no minimum purchase. I do order from LL Bean from time to time as their flannels and women's tee's are very good quality and value, so I didn't feel guilty. This will be a gift for DS, who will have limited space to bring gifts back, but can tuck this in his back pack side pocket and fill once through security.

Blip's included
  • Stopped and got Taco Bell on route home yesterday from work. I needed to get back on line, and I just got a craving for junk food. I was sorry after eating it, and sorrier this morning. $4.29 of needless expense, not counting the Tums.

  • We ran out of dog food and some personal care needs, and had to purchase at the grocery store, full price, due to lack of planning.
  •  Concert tickets for today's show, plus the Show Choir preview all had to be bought this week for $80 out of pocket, plus another $4 for orchestra (DH wasn't able to get off work) concert for me.  Some will get reimbursed as we picked up for a couple others, but still cash flow.
  • DH was let loose in the grocery store.  Forget staying under $400 as I have only $53 left in the budget, and 13 more days to go. It won't happen. He did but a tasty vegetable lasagna for $7.00 That we got two meals out of though. My new goal is to come in under $450. Considering this was to include all Christmas foods, plus the extra two adults, I was probably unrealistic.

  1. I know what you mean, I took hubby to Costco earlier this month, somewhere we don't normally go together as I do grocery shopping and came home with an $11 jar of pickled eggs. And box of Calamari. The calamari was gross, we ended up throwing most of it out and I hate waste but it really was yucky. Hubby said the pickled eggs aren't that great either. I crave fast food once in a while and same, thing, other than Japanese always end up regretting the experience and the money.

    1. I think I am really smart that I let the Sam's club membership go when it expired after DD1 graduated high school. We just didn't have the need for the sizes offered and he would be picking up cases on cheese deep in cans the size of my head.

  2. I too crave fast food at times, but usually regret it. I have In & Out once a year or so, and while I don't feel healthy, it also doesn't hurt my stomach after. ;-)

You did great with the savings! You can definitely tell when M does the shopping at our house. He doesn't really buy random stuff - just more than what we need of anything, and cares WAY less about food waste than I do. *cringe*

    1. I hear the No Food Waste mantra is our unifying them going into 2017 and we may need help coaxing our significant others along. It's hard to train him that it is not a good deal if part goes in the garbage. I'm hoping I did better with the kids, but DD2 always seems to leave at least a bowls worth of cereal to get stale.

  3. Sounds like your on point things far outweighed the blips.

I am giving myself the gift of not beating me to a pulp over budget failures this year. I am spending much less on gifts even though I am actually giving more presents, so if I run over on groceries so be it. It is all going to work out in the end!

    1. I too will be forgiving when we do not make the target. Eating out has been minimal this month, and not at all for supper.I don' think we've even picked up a take and bake pizza or deli chicken. Of course, we are only at the 17th. Other than my T-Bell blip, I've brought lunch every day, though DH and DD have spent money on lunches and early dinners to accommodate their schedules.

  4. My fast food weakness is Chick Fil A. Their meals are pricey so I usually order a large waffle fry and an ice cream cone with ice water. It's less than $5, but like you mentioned, I always end up feeling guilty for stopping. Hope you have a great week.

    1. I've only been exposed to Chick Fil A in airports and can see why it is a guilty pleasure-Love waffle fries. I admit to the frequent McDonald's cones as well. Somehow I don't feel as bad if that's all but French fries often get added.
