Embracing January

Once my daughter's birthday is over mid month, I have little love for January. It is cold. My skin gets so dry, my elbows and knees feel like sand paper. My lips beg for moisture and are prone to cracking. My straight hair rises wildly due to static electricity and the layers of clothing make me feel heavier than I already feel. The days, while gaining some day light, are short. I crave the sun. I have too much screen time in my non working hours, and I know that contributes to head aches.

What's a northern dwelling sun loving girl to do? Fake embrace the month. There are a few things that can best be appreciated in the heart of winter.
  • Hot chocolate in a travel mug while watching a hockey game
  • Walking the dog under a full moon, hearing the snow and ice crystals crackle under your feet (next full moon is January 12th)
  • Snow tubing, skiing, or snowboarding-OK, watching snow tubing, skiing, and snowboarding
  • Sipping a glass of red wine beside a fireplace, or the glow of candle light
  • A warm shower and flannel pajamas
  • Take a day trip, finding an independent coffee shop and book store to peruse
  • Reading a new book in the late afternoon, tucked under a blanket while wearing cozy slippers
  • A new season of Sherlock
  • Counting down-only 71 more days until spring!

  1. Enjoy your fun cold weather appreciation activities. I will not gripe about cold weather. It is always very brief here and as soon as mid May rolls around we hit the 90's and it won't let up until mid-October

    1. It's the butter cold I hate. Snow is lovely if not driving in it.

  3. This is why I go away on 1st Feb and have done for years. January doesn't have a lot going for it and I suffer from S.A.D so planning a trip gets me through it lol. I also watch episodes of a place in the sun and death in paradise as these are full of sunshine and cheer me up. I have to say though that I'm not so gloomy this year I think it's something to do with not having to go to work in the dark and come home in the dark with no daylight in between. Keep cheery Sam spring is around the corner.

    1. Oh I would love to get away-when we retire, I will not feel bound to stay. Please write about your upcoming trip in a post or comments so I can enjoy with you.

  4. I think you have the right ideas for sure. What about one of my favorites - a hot bath with a good book, candles, and a piece of chocolate to enjoy?

    1. That is a good one-but have to plan ahead so as not hog the bathrooms. We have two, but one of the tubs needs some help-actually ceiling above needs some help and we had to cut a panel out, and of course not yet repaired so debris flies in ther. Dumb problem to have.
