Feeling My Age

These added pounds are making me feel older than I should feel. Granted, the arthritis doesn't help and I'll have the occasional flare up that I've dealt with for quite a while now.. I'm talking though on the relatively good days when bending over to pick something up is straining because of the belly flab. I'm talking about feeling the need to only wear shirts that cover the upper third of my arm, which means in a warm meeting room, I am apt to keep my sweater or suit jacket on if I only wore a simple shell underneath it. I picked up  my hair coloring, and extra multi plug electrical cord, and a few other odds and ends at Walmart yesterday morning. The main aisle to the registers is the women's clothing on one section. There was a display of comfy, but nice looking sleeveless tunics, including a nice shade of blue and one in salmon. These would be the type of shirt perfect for summer with skirts at work, or long shorts and capris pants on vacation, out for the night, or hosting friends. Except, I would feel awkward in them. Yes, I know we are supposed to be body positive and embrace the curves. Still,I've never heard the mantra of embrace the arm jiggle though.

I was very long overdue for a hair color-sad really that I let my preferred look go for so long. You might remember, I delayed the color and cut in January as I was on a self imposed austerity month. January went and so did February; now  halfway through March before I took care of my hair. Such a little thing, and relatively little expense to feel better about my appearance. I know I could start to embrace the gray, but I am not ready for that-at all. I had let my hair grow too long for my personal comfort. Gone are the days when I would routinely sport long braids and twist them under for work. I just want my hair long enough to be able to completely pull back in a pony tail on really hot days, exercising or working around the house, but no longer want any fuss of daily styling. Long hair and short hair is equally too fussy for me. The long lifeless hair was dragging my whole face down. I had four plus inches cut off and my head feels lighter, plus rounds out my less than professional color job.

No makeup and hair still wet and I feel 10X better than an hour before.
Having time off work, getting things done around the house, cleaning , sorting, and purging, leaves a lot of time to think. I do need to make sure I am taking care of myself and that includes for appearance sake as well. Of course losing the  weight to get to a healthy place will be good for my heart, but it will also be good for my head. I'm perfectly fine with being 52 years old. While probably a shade past middle age, I think I have decades of wonderful living ahead of me. I just want to feel and look the age I am while living it. I can embrace that.

  1. That's a very nice picture! Remember, self care first.. When I ran, I did so at the same time each day. Kids dropped off at school or bus, and off I went. Nothing, and I mean nothing, happened in our family that required my involvement during that time.

    1. I use my early monring time for myself, but too often I fit in an extra load of clothes, hop on e-mails. I need to create appoitnments for things like hair cuts . ONce walking is safe again, adding at least a 20 minute morning walk will do me wonders again.

  2. That is a beautiful picture! I have to get back to self care and losing weight. I fell hard off the wagon the last month and that is not a good thing as we are going to the beach this summer....

    1. Thanks, Rachel. I liteally snapped it while typing the (badly edited) post. I need to work on my core andmy arms-other things should settle back if I can get those two areas strengthened and tightened. I've been tryng for years, so just trying isn't going to do it. good luck to you, but remember to still enjoy your summer regardless of hwo much weight you do or do not lose.

  3. Good for you for investing some money and time for yourself. It seems we moms rarely put our resources into our being, choosing to use time and money on others.
I join you in the constant weight battle (Yeah, weight is winning this battle, but the war is not over __yet!)

    1. We had passport pics today to renew ours and I did put some makeup on. My daughter said my picture makes my passport look dressed up. I had to laugh at that. I hope I win a fe battle before August on the weight front.

  4. I think your color looks nice! As for the weight, I yo-yo so I know what you mean about extra weight feeling like it's, well, weighing you down.

My mom once told someone that her weight was bothering her. The person essentially told her that when the weight bothered her enough, she'd do something about it. Until then, clearly it wasn't a big deal. I like the sentiment.

It sounds like you might be reaching the point where it's a big enough deal, so if/when you do take action, I hope you find some exercise or diet that's at least tolerable.

  5. I had a really hard time after I gained weight taking steroids. It went right to my lower abdomen like below my waist and it made it hard to bend. I started the Julian Micheal level 1 work out on You tube. It takes less than a 1/2 hour. I did it every night for 6 weeks and the area was gone. It was kick my butt hard, but worth it.

    1. Nice tip. I've been doing some online videos-short 10 minute targeted options. Oh, the bending over when pants are just barely fitting....

    1. Oh, being too lazy to put much effort I think has been good on my skin. The lines are slowly coming now though, and I could use a little brightening, so I've decided I at least shoudl put a tocuh of blush, lip gloss, and mascara on before leaving the hosue.

  11. My hair was the length of yours when I asked exbf to take off 1/2 inch for me. I have the three inch long pieces here to prove he took off more. I cannot do anything with it. I had a professional trim the stringy pieces but not the horrendous gap he created. I would have a pixie if she really fixed my hair as it needed.

I had a standing appointment with hairdresser for first Wednesday of every month at 3 pm. It worked. Once she had surgery and does not work, I am lost. I see those tunics at WM, too, and pass the sleeveless one up. I just want a tiny bit of a sleeve, something that is not sleeveless. A sleeve that hits me at bend of arm worries me to death as I wear it. I wish my hair were as long as yours instead of three inches from shoulder. No ponytails here!

  12. When you get rid of weight surplus, your arthritis will hopefully 'keep quiet', and exercise with dumbbells will help tone the upper arms.

I have at home two vinyl weights each 3 kilos, bought at a sports store many years ago.
It's possible to exercise with them quite successfully according to Youtube tutorials.

I have an additional simple, cheap (chinese), device (stretching) which can be quite efficient both with upper arms and legs. What I don't have much is dedication and motivation as this is not exactly a health issue.

    1. Keep quiet is a good way to say what I'd like the arthritis to do! I'm digging up some old PT guides and will most likely get prescribed a new round soon and hope to get some bad posture/form corrected.

  13. You must be reading my mind at the moment. I am overweight - not horrendously obese but overweight nevertheless (due mainly but not only to the menopause). I can live with the weight (sort of) but what is really getting to me is what I call the "granny grunt" clothes - you know the ones you feel you could stick 3 tent poles up the seams and move a family of gypsies in! So it's on to a new diet for me as from Monday. If that fails (or should I say "if I fail to follow through on that") I guess I should just shut up and put up. We'll see. And that's a lovely photo of you. Anna
