Bracing for a Long Commute Home
We got a little kiss of snow, perhaps an inch of grown cover on Thanksgiving Day. Weather predictors are saying today should be our first test of snowy driving with snow starting early to mid afternoon, ramping up for the evening commute home. Just my luck in that I have to be in the office today, though potentially will be able to leave early afternoon and finish my day form home, rather than brave the traffic, which can double, and sometimes triple my commute on the first few snowfalls of the year. While we Minnesotans are hearty when it comes to weather, we are also a bit dense in that it takes us a few snowfalls to remember the driving rules like keeping a safe distance, ramps get slippery, stock your windshield wiper fluid as there is snowy crap spewing to block vision, and drive with lights on. Pretty basic stuff, but the ditches will be lined with folks driving to fast, and going off the road, or worse, rear ending the person in front of them. I'll let you know tomorrow how my adventure fairs.

ReplyDeleteNot looking forward to the white hell here. Last Thanksgiving we had white on the ground already but still nothing in sight yet for us....knock on wood!
Nice two hour drive into the office, but I am working from home the rest of the day into the night as it is expected topic up again, about now, and last throughout the evening. DD#2 is already thinking snow day-which are rare in Minnesota. If it is, I'll be working form home tomorrow as well.
DeleteHope everyone drives carefully and safely. Weather forecasters keep predicting a white winter here but we've not had any snow just yet - which I am glad about! More than enough rain though... xxx
ReplyDeleteI've not heard of anyone I know in any scrapes yet, but know there were several. I try and give extra distance, but sometimes, nothing can be done. I have one stretch with a steep hill and a couple cars were sliding backwards. It is pretty out there. I'll have to get a few pictures.
DeleteIllinoisan also need refresher courses in driving ever winter! But luckily, we have only had one major snow fall this year. It just keeps raining which is superb compared to snow. It is supposed to get to almost 60 this weekend!!!!! I may need shades.
ReplyDeleteOur big snow yesterday afternoon to evening was mostly rain-too warm at 37. We're in fir a non December like weekend too. It was complete crap yesterday morning though and bad drivers everywhere.
DeleteWe had our first snowfall last weekend but thankfully it wasn't more than a dusting. The UK are woefully ill prepared for snow and the country grinds to a standstill each time we get any! xxx
ReplyDeleteOh no and you on the road last week too. We should be better prepared than we are. My daughter missed her MN snow her UK winter. She loves it so happy to see it, but intetesting that she didn't volunteer to shovel.
DeleteWe can get loads of snow here all winter too and it still amazes me that the first few snow falls it seems like everyone on the road had forgotten how to drive in the snow. Every single year. Maybe it's just all the kids who turned 16 over the summer and are just driving in snow for the first time??? Yeah, first few snowfalls are horrible for slide offs and accidents!
ReplyDeleteOf course my kids were excellent teen drivers...You reminded me of my fright yesterday nearly getting mowed down by a pixie of a little thing pulling out of her spot in the high school parking lot without any look right or left. Commuters are another story. Big trucks that think they are invincible; too timid of drivers that panic with any little slide. By January, everyone will be normal again-I hope.
