When DD1 and I went grocery shopping on Friday, we put my budget high on a shelf, never to be thought of again. I was very unrealistic in hindsight. Adding two grown adults, plus DD2 home two extra days last week alone added up. Then there is the wish to have some special food available, but yet I got carried away. I had budgeted some meals with friends and family out, which makes my over indulgence even more daffy. It will all get eaten, and hoping by being savvy, I can make a dent ahead of the game for January.
I have three + generous meal portions of the ham left from Christmas Eve. I froze two portions, and the third + will be used this week for omelettes, wraps, and in a batch of wild rice soup. Ham adds a different flavor than the regular chicken that is quite nice.
I bought three tubs of hummus, plus sausage, cheese, and crackers for Christmas day, but my sister in law had so many snacks already cut and served, and a refrigerator full, she sent all mine back with me. DD1 made herself a little care package to take home today with her leftover meatless patties, some assorted raw veggies, and one of the hummus tubs. She will be able to just unload, and relax once back to her apartment, having a days worth of healthy food. Always a mom, right?
DS is going to make supper either tonight or Thursday, cooking up salmon for the three of them, as I am not a fan, probably with some roasted potatoes and a salad. We'll have steak tonight with baked potatoes, snow peas, and broccoli. He was hoping for steak, nice fish, and chicken Parmesan, which I made Monday, so I have made him a happy and stuffed man. Saturday morning, DS wanted a tour of what was off limits, knowing his mother well. Yesterday I lifted the embargo and declared the entire kitchen open for business. Lunches have been and will be, whatever is wanted from the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry. We bring DS to the airport about 4:00 on Friday, and will send him off with a good meal, and a healthy snack for the plane trip, as he'll have a long wait before boarding, a three hour flight, and probably another hour before he is home, making for a long night of traveling.
I'll inventory on Saturday, and create a game plan to eat down the food stocks before any grocery shopping with the exception of fresh fruit, veg, milk, and bread. January, austerity in the grocery department is resumed. Did anyone go off the rails in their grocery shopping before Christmas? If so, how are you now managing your surplus?

DeleteBudget? There was supposed to be a budget? Yep, I went a little overboard. Son 2 and Son3 have both been here along with others for Christmas brunch and Mom for some dinners. Much has been cooked and a lot consumed, but I do have about a meal plus enough ham for bean soup left and crackers and cheeses out the wahzoo left over. In addition I have stuff still left from Thanksgiving in the freezer. Unless it is a terrific buy at stock up prices, I only need to buy milk, bread and produce for a while.

I still need to resort to post-it notes on items not for consumption.
Son3 tried to eat something before Christmas and I yelled that those were for saving not for eating. So all day Christmas I kept hearing about them eating Saving Food.

DeleteI had an extra generous december food budget due to underage in November plus grocery points to use - and am still just a bit over. I am going to take it easy in January as well. Kid #2 leaves on Friday so we can go back to normal eating instead of over cooking then having leftovers to deal with. I am ready for soup and salads!

DeleteI know what you mean! We're digging leftovers out of the fridge still. For lunch today, I poured some alfredo sauce over some stuffing with turkey bits and cheese, nuked it until hot. not the best thing I've made with leftovers, but hey... I'm trying!

DeleteI sort of have the opposite problem - food that I had purchased for New Year's weekend ended up getting used on Christmas day/weekend instead. My sister-in-law who was hosting Christmas Day became ill with vertigo and a sinus infection so cancelled dinner the day before. So I had relatives come to my house for Christmas dinner instead so my stocks are very depleted. My budget, like yours, is lurking on some high shelf laughing at me!
