I periodically call out my five best and worse attempts at thrift. To end on positive notes, I'll reverse order and start with budget blips.
1. Backed up sink and had to buy drain unclogger that didn't work. Roto Rooter is next call.
2. Went out, unplanned, for supper Friday spending $53 on a delicious dinner, but made of items we mostly had at home.
3. Had to throw out a good two portions of soup pushed to back of fridge and forgotten.
4. Splurged twice on coffee out plus apps and drinks twice this week.
5. Filled car without a gas coupon.
And the wins...
1.Found reduced pumpkin, coffee, and nutrition bars, all needed items.
2.Melatonin prescription vitamin was on sale plus had a $1.00 coupon.
3. Used free Sabra Hummus voucher and batched cooked.
4. Avoided a third coffee out and had it at home with my daughter. Also we all ordered water for dinner.
5. Saved DD2 money by sending her home with baking dish and a few oranges that were likely more than we could use.
Little things add up, but I hope my wins counter the blips and I stayed even. Probably not with all the food and drinks out but I have high hopes for the coming week.
You did great. Every week for us is a week of five wins & at least five losses. :-) Wish you were closer - I could hook you up with so many oranges! We have three trees, all of which are out of control right now. If I don't stay on top of them, the squirrels get into them, and drag orange peel all over my yard.
ReplyDeleteWe had apple trees with our first house and it was the same. I'd be a happy neighbor! Does your new house have fruit trees?
DeleteExcellent and there's always something to be learned from the ones which went slightly astray. Having found a very old packet of ham pushed to the back of the fridge where I couldn't see it which I didn't know about because my son had bought it I now bung anything like that in the freezer so that it doesn't come as a nasty surprise at some point in the future! It's not completely fool proof but an improvement.

That's what I should have done with the soup but it was supposed to be DH's lunch. Yes, the fails are learning opportunities.
DeleteIt's always the unexpected - but nice - stuff that throws the budget. I think you're doing brilliantly. Jx
ReplyDeleteI could do without the blocked drain, but the nice Friday dinner with our girls was a good treat. Extra efforts this week, particularly on the meal front.
DeleteI had to toss some soup this weekend too and I hate that kind of waste. I usually try to freeze the extra but just didn't get around to it. On the frugal end of things I budget $70/week for groceries and my highest week for January was $58 so I have $25 leftover for the month (shopped this morning for the rest of January). It all evens out I guess.
ReplyDeleteMy thrown soup was supposed to have been eaten for lunches. Do you know what has contributed to your shopping reduction? $25 is a nice savings from what you planed to spend.
DeleteI have decided I am going to give myself a pass as long as I have more successes than failures. Sadly food waste happens sometimes. I know I should always just go ahead and freeze everything in individual serving sizes but I don't, so I am tossing about a cup of bean soup today as I clean the fridge.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the saying, the stupid tax? That's what food waste feels like to me. Checks and balances, but with writing about wanting to travel more, every needless spend is money away from better uses for me.
