Halloween 2020

Thirty years ago I was home with just my not quite two year old son because I had been put on a  reduced activity plan by my OB. My son was born a little more than three weeks early, but after I had been on bed rest for four weeks, and they didn't want the same to happen with  this pregnancy. I was still a few weeks out from my due date and even though had made it past the  time of concern, it didn't make sense to go back in my classroom for a few weeks only to leave again. It actually was a pretty easy  pregnancy, and I remember that day feeling really good. It was a beautiful weather day-no jackets needed for trick and treating, as we brought our little guy to a few neighbors houses, his moms, and then  DH stayed home while I took him out to my parents, who still lived five miles out of town. Contractions started there, and by the time I was back in town, I was in full on labor.  The little man got brought back to his parents for the night and off to the hospital we went, and she was born before 10:00. Hard to believe that little black haired peanut is now a  beautiful woman of 30.

This would have been New Years Eve, 1990,
and still in our little house.

Fortunately, she never felt  jilted from all the specialness of  her birthday being shared with such a kids focused holiday. Instead, she's always leaned into the holiday, loving Halloween and the tie to her night of birth. What a year though to have a milestone birthday!  Not strange that such a high profile even should be occurring on one of her milestone birthdays. She had her first birthday after all on Halloween 1991-the record setting Minnesota Halloween blizzard. It was actually a three day blizzard, as in some parts of the state and Wisconsin, the snow continued for two more days, followed by a week of getting roads and sidewalks, and in some cases houses dug out. Thanks for reading my trip down memory lane and shout out to wish my daughter a very happy birthday, and hoping the next 12 months brings her joy. I can't help but think something very special is on the horizon for her.

What will you all be doing today? I am going to calorie splurge and get that  pepperoni pumpkin pizza  after meeting my daughter and her friend for a birthday toast. After I watch for trick or treater-safely distanced from the candy pick up point, we'll pop that in the oven and find a movie. I'm partial to a good ghost story, but not a fan of the slashers type  Halloween horror movies. Here's a few I'll look for:

The Uninvited (original)

The Uninvited (2009 version which isn't really a remake)

Portrait of Jennie

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir\

The Others

Not a ghost story, but fit the season:

Rebecca (original)

Just on  Netflix, (new) Rebecca

I could go on and on. I hope I can find any of the classics playing, even if I have to pay the streaming fee. Even if I wasn't avoiding groups of people, I can't see that we would be going out to costume parties or bars for the night anyway. Since Saturday, we likely would have met friends for Happy Hour before coming home to hand out treats, or maybe since the weather is so nice, meet up at one of my sisters for a fire. The latter isn't off the table yet-something impromptu might still  come up. If not, the world of streaming movies will make me happy with a black and white classic or  maybe something new thrown in. Throw in you recommendations. It's going to be a long winter and I look forward to seeing some old friends. That's my preview of Halloween 2020. I'll be back later posting my Days of Our Distance Lives post.

  1. I remember Halloween, 1990 very well! Our first child was due the next day, and we had just found out that the baby was breech. I was scheduled for a version on November 1st. When it didn't work (his heartbeat dropped every time they tried to turn him), the doctor turned to me and said "feel like having this baby today?" I burst into tears and said I wasn't ready! On his due date! I blame my hormones. Two hours later I had a c-section and our son Joe was born. Happy Birthday to our 30-year old babies!

  2. Happy 30th birthday to your daughter from France. Since we've just gone back into a national lockdown I seriously doubt I'll get any trick-or-treaters, although I suspect the neighbour's little kids might well ring my doorbell and skitter back home pretty sharp. And you're right, it's gonna be a long hard winter isn't it!

  3. Happy 30th to your daughter. I've always liked Halloween but this year it's a no go for me. I did just clean my oven and make some pecan pie bars with the residual heat LOL so have a nice treat for later. Since DD was early, how much did she weigh? All 3 of my kids were late.

  8. Happy birthday to your daughter. What a sweet baby picture. Hope she enjoys this Halloween.
Nothing exciting happening here. I think we will get a pizza and watch the new Mandalorian series. I was trying to get dh to watch Warm Bodies, a Romeo and Juliet zombie movie that sounds sooo campy. ;) Have a fun weekend.

  9. If you can't find the movie, "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," see if you can download the book. It's a quick read.
