Week in W's-Nearing a Pause

hat's up with you all this dreary Friday morning? As I enjoyed challenging myself last year to post for a month on all things winter, holiday, and Christmas under a sort of Blogmas umbrella, I think I'll be pausing on wrapping up my week in W's. It might have run its course anyway, since I've been doing this for over a year now. As you read this, do you have any thoughts? Is it at all interesting to capture current events, even if just the current events in my life, in this manner? I'll keep thinking, Until then, I still have  a few more Fridays in November, so here is my week in W's.

What's top of mind:
I sound like a broken record and it's still a long way off, but top of mind is DH's retirement. I keep thinking we might be able to knock a few more months off of it if I am frugal enough. Why is it top of mind again this week?  He took two days off, Monday and Tuesday, following his normal Sunday off. Having three days off in a row wasn't even like vacation time, but was spent just taking care of life stuff and trying to get a little down time. Monday morning though, he got called by a customer that had been in the previous Friday for a truck, and felt obligated on a couple fronts to go in. One, it was a long term guy who has purchased several vehicles, and second, had he not gone in, he would have had to split the commission with one of the two lazy sales staff, that show up  late virtually every day, and call in sick at least once per week. It was a lucrative deal so I don't blame him.

Then on Tuesday, he intended to take care of something on the boat at the lake in the morning, but ended up stuck there all day due to a power company issue. A neighbor is building a garage and loft, and  they shut the power off on the entire side of the lake. Well, this caused several things to go offline, and because it was a power company direct action, not a tripped fuse or circuit, the alert DH would have normally received wasn't sent automatically as programmed. It was pure luck that he was there because the  furnace needed to be manually started. With no one planning on being there for a few weeks, what a mess that could have been if we got a stretch of cold weather and the pipes froze? Another mess if DH hadn't been there would have been the refrigerators, which both have meat in the freezers left from summer. This is normal life stuff that comes up, but it took his entire day as he wanted to make sure when they shut the power off again, our furnace would start. He let his siblings and mom know, made sure to say it was handled, but of course his mom was still upset so he had to deal with making sure she was calmed down. Even his  vacation days get sucked away. I have no doubt that when he retires, he will not be bored.

Where I've been: Besides  sisters day, I've popped into  the store for a chicken deal as they were sold out earlier when DH stopped, and I went to Trivia. We were a small group, but as I hadn't been there for many weeks, it was nice to play again. We kept our regular place as "participants" not "placers."

Where I'm going: In my post Tuesday, I made mention to say yes and plan and do the things that keep us connected.  My SIL, DH's brothers wife, the favorite DIL of his moms (I'm not kidding and it's quite apparent-even his sister has made comments that her own mom likes this DIL better than her), texted both DH's sister and I that she and our MIL were making lefse on Saturday and would we like to join. Now, my daughter has helped her grandma, and I think my niece might have once before as well, but I've never been invited. My first thought was a bit pissy, but then I thought about it and realized other times they've made it has been on weekdays, and I wouldn't have been able to join likely anyway. I seriously doubt there was any intended slight, and I chose to take it in the spirit of being part of continuing traditions. I know my MIL is slowly backing off things she used to do due to arthritis in hands, and trouble standing for more than a few minutes, and wants others to keep some traditions. Long way to get to where I am going, but the answer is to my SIL's to make lefse.

What I'm reading: I am backed up on reading the Real SImple magazines I got-both October and November were sitting this week. I finally sat down with a cup of tea and did a cover to cover read of both. Magazine reading, if you actually read the articles counts as reading, right?

What I'm listening to: Mostly in the background to cooking, cleaning, or blogging again is fall YouTube videos. I've been really listening to  those with Dollar Tree, Trader Joe's, Target, and Aldi hauls. Man, some people buy a lot of crap!

What I've been watching:  I got caught up this week on past  episodes of Holby City and Casualty. What I don't understand is if they are the same hospital, how come there is never references to huge things that happen in one or the other shows? I get that in a huge hospital, the doctors, nurses, and other staff may not intersect at all, but we're talking  human trafficking scandals, bombs, and active shooters and nothing between the shows is mentioned on the other. I watch these on Brit Box, so if  you don't subscribe or are not a UK reader, I'm likely talking nonsense, just like the writing has become on these two shows.

What I'm eating: Soup! I couldn't hold off any longer and  after making the big batch of pasta fagiole, the cheap chicken deal and a bag of Trader Joe Tortellini called for me to make chicken tortellini soup. DH and I had for supper last night and was it ever good.

I've also been munching on these mini-cucumbers with either hummus, or ranch dressing. I also bought some pears that were not ripe when I bought, but have ripened since. While they are OK, I'm disappointed that they weren't more flavorful and actually a bit woody. I try and do good with my snacking, but I just don't have these issues with potato chips.

Who I'm paying attention to: My family is who I am paying attention to right now. There is a lot of issues with a couple extended family members and it is sad to hear of the same negative actions over and over, with the same and new negative consequences.

Who needs to be (figuratively) slapped: No, I will not give to the RNC to support the legacy of the former ass in chief, so stop calling! How the heck do I keep getting on more and more lists when I keep requesting  to be on Do Not Call lists? And how would the RNC have our house on their list and specifically my name? This is to our home phone, which is a cell phone line connection and the bill is not even in my name. I'll slap them 10 times for harassment!  To be fair, I'm sure the DNC has crossed wires with  people on the opposite of their political spectrum as well. They can take a slap as well.

What's Making Me Smile:  Its cold and chilly as I type this, and someone is right on my feet. He'll move to the bed in a bit I'm sure, if I stay in here much longer, but he'll be disappointed to be disrupted when I leave the room. He'll be happy to have me back on my regular work schedule.
Only one rug-the other is my dog.

Speaking of getting back to a normal schedule, this is my last vacation day off other than weekends, for quite a while. I do have a flex day coming up on December 3rd, and a four day holiday weekend for Thanksgiving. With daylight savings, it will be dark long before I end my work day so I'll need to coordinate getting pup for a walk whenever possible while it is still light out. Mostly, this time of year will have me donning my head lamp again which is much easier than carrying a flashlight. If you want to play along, pop a comment on any of the W's of your week. I'm always curious who needs to be slapped.

  1. The yard cleanup was on my mind until this past weekend of finally getting it 95% done. It involves more than leaf raking so it takes a lot of time and energy. Have also a cellphone line connection and have been having the same problem with an average of 4 calls a day. I cringe every time the phone rings. We had homemade ham soup which my mom used to call boiled dinner. I didn't have a ham bone so used a small ham steak to make a nice stock and between the meat from it and another ham steak cut up with potatoes, carrots, onions and cabbage, make a very hearty and tasty soup, almost a stew. We watched Ghosts which is a BBC television show. There is currently an American version that is no where near as fun to watch because there is nothing better than British humor. I recently bought new beds for 2 of our cats (the other 2 wouldn't like this style which are the round super fluffy beds that are now available) and they both use them but the sister likes to move in with the brother to snuggle together, and it is so darn cute. And very cozy. I've started book 2 of another trilogy. Not to every ones liking, but a way to forget about all of the reality that gets a bit overwhelming, at times. Love,Lies and Hocus Pocus by Lydia Sherrer, which I have just realized is not a trilogy but 2 of 6. Will worry about that when I get there, I guess. Cooler weather and lots of gray skies lately and finally rain this week and now snow possible. Not ready (mentally) for snow but unless I decide to move somewhere else, will have to deal with it. I do like the 4 seasons but Winter has become more of a challenge. Hope you have a great weekend. Ranee (MN)

    1. DH usually mows all the leaves down to mulch, but the leaves were slower to come off and now we might have snow. I enjoy British humour as well and I like how their crime dramas actually follow a whole case realistically over many shows.

  2. That would be great if you could knock a few more months off of DHs retirement by being more frugal. I was laughing out loud over your comment that some people buy a lot of crap. Yes! I so agree with you. Moss Family TV does the same thing. How much Dollar store crap do they need? LOL

    1. To know he only has two Winters more if working, but would be so nice to knock a summer off and have him retire July 1, 2023 would be great. I get that I don't have young kids to entertain anymore with crafts, but there's so much in some of their carts.

  3. Hi Sam, I think that now you can get alarms that will notify you if a furnace or refrigerator stops working. A backup generator is even better, but I understand rather expensive.

    1. They have all the bells and alarms. But the furnace not coming back on was a problem. We should look at getting a generator.

  4. I understand your husband's reluctance to share a commission, especially if he is the one who did the legwork.
I live in a state that does not require party registration. I get hit by both parties____ALL. THE. TIME.

    1. I'll happily slap 'em in Alabama too! I just can't figure out how they have my name-it's creepy.

  5. I laughed when I read, "Man, some people buy a lot of crap!" This is SO TRUE. I never understand why people buy so much junk. How on earth do you actually NEED some of those things???

My husband and I are watching some old Forensic Files on Hulu. It's amazing what people think they can get away with!

As for people who need to be slapped, I nominate the people from a local group who were advocating for stealing books they didn't agree with from libraries and/or holding a book burning. Those people definitely need to be slapped, possibly twice.

Have a good weekend! Give your doggo a pet for me. :)

    1. That infuriates me about the library. Have people lost their bloody minds? The morality police alt right, and the hyper woke, but ignorant alt left equally drive me to want to move off the grid.

  7. Just seeing how your husband spent his "days off" makes me think he probably can't wait to retire, so if he can go even a couple of months early I would jump at it - not that the power outtage at the lake place was anybody's fault of course. And I did a double take on that last picture. Thought you'd got some REALLY eccentric slippers!

    1. Did pup fool you? I've been running numbers and I think we can shave 6 months off his work life and give him pretty much a summer back. He'd be shy of age 62 by 6 weeks, but we weren't planning to need his income or SSI anyway. 2022 will be the test.

  8. AT&T needs to be slapped repeatedly for re-directing my phone calls so they can "help" me get a new phone. Slap them repeatedly every day!

It took me a bit to figure out the picture...lol. So, he is a footwarmer.

It is a wonder the utility company did not warn people afterward. Well, I am glad he saved the day.

    1. Oh, they left tags in door knobs! What good does that do for seasonal occupants? You've had quite a pain with AT&T.

  9. I can’t believe it’s been over a year of W’s….doesn’t seem like it could be! Very much a ho-hum week here, but hubby and I had a sort of date night for a change, if you call take out nachos and a trip to Sam’s Club a date lol. I should be slapping myself to get up off the couch and straighten up the house or something but I’m just too comfortable. I couldn’t get into the hallmark movie tonight so I have the Leafs-Flames game on. Husband is already in bed, and my son is fighting sleep sprawled out on the loveseat. So I’ll use them as an excuse to not make any noise by cleaning up ;) I could probably fall asleep too. The holiday craziness has already started and I’m not looking forward to tomorrow. It’s guaranteed to be a busy day. I’d also like to slap the cranky customers, particularly the ones today who stormed out and just about broke the door off the hinges because she was tired of waiting in line, the lady who wanted me to ring her out as I was walking off the floor carrying my cellphone and coffee cup, clearly on my break, and the lady who we realized too late had returned obviously worn shoes and clothes, probably after she had her kid’s Christmas pictures taken. 10. In your honor I'll be as patient as possible. The Ws started last September!

  11. Love the pup picture! So cute!
Glad your hubby was able to take care of the power outage problems. Frozen pipes and spoiled meat would not have been fun. I'm sure he is looking forward to retirement, and I bet his stress levels will go down.
    Your soup sounds delicious.
A while back, I kept getting Trump requests for money...Surveys that were so biased that I wouldn't call them a survey...and I think it was because I wrote my congressman to complain about his votes. I'm guessing he sold out my name, email etc, but the laughs on them since they won't be getting any money from me.
We watched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings on Disney+ last night. We really enjoyed it!
Hope you have a good weekend.

    1. I saw that Marvel movie with my daughter back in September I think. There was a lot going on in it. I just find it ridiculous that the whole GOP has become cult like in their worship of a con man. I doubt I have any reader's that adore him, but someone with an ounce of sense needs to explain it to me because a I'm eternally baffled.
