The year's have truly moved fast. My oldest is 33 today, and 1,934.2 miles away, living his best life. The kid that loved adventure and dinosaur movies spends his days setting up or being on set now for real. He's not had a smooth career path, but he seems genuinely content. I guess that's what we hope for when we decide to have kids. We don't get to direct their life, but be there when they might need us. I had a combination birthday/Christmas gift shipped directly to him, plus mailed a card. Likely both will arrive late, but I'll send an e- card to get some birthday coffee and a pastry. I doubt he'll do much other than work as the project is on full cylinders to wrap up before Christmas. Other gifts will either be sent after Christmas, or I've still got hope he'll get home.
I braved Aldi yesterday trying to start getting all my treat making ingredients. I bought tons of chocolate and white chocolate chips, peanut butter out my ears, and bricks of cream cheese. There's more I need but will have to get elsewhere like Oreos and fake nutter butter cookies. They were out of the store brand crescent roll dough and I use a lot! I priced meatballs and definitely the better price at Sam's Club. I also couldn't get many ingredients for the cheesy potatoes for Christmas day lunch. But, despite the chaos of people shopping after the first large snow fall and holiday shopping, I bought enough and can get some things done this week.
I was going to try a small batch of the cranberry, pistachio, white chocolate treat One Family, One Income talked about. It sounds tasty and pretty. My scattered brain bought another bag of pecans-not pistachios! I'll add pistachios to the list of other odds and ends. I think I'll use the sleeve of saltines to make a half batch Christmas crack along with puppy chow tomorrow night. I'll do the first of my fudge too. Things are getting done and looking almost festive.
I've got to get logged on early to finish a budget submission and policy language to my boss by 9:30. I just got this on my desk Friday, and though I made a good start, it's not quite right or detailed enough. Please wish this old lady with a 33 year old a burst of adrenaline. I'm going to need it. I hope your week gets off to a good start.
I hope your week gets off to a good start too, Sam. Happy 33rd birthday to your son. The years just seem to fly by don’t they? Sounds like you are off to a good start on getting supplies for Christmas baking.
ReplyDeleteSupplies, yes, but now I need to get moving. I've got events this weekend to share.
DeleteHappy birthday to your son! I have one round of cookies done and still plan to make caramel corn and another batch of cranberry orange drops but that’s the last of the sweets. Thanks for the reminder to get my cheesy hash brown ingredients now, the stores always seem to run out of the potatoes and Christmas would be ruined without it lol! Today is a senior skip day and I happen to be off, so my daughter and I have big plans to knock out a chunk of shopping (she hasn’t started hers at all) and lunch. I need to pick up some photos at Walgreens and an order from kohl’s as well. Busy busy. Sending a virtual espresso your way! JoAnn
ReplyDeleteWhat I make are fast. I'm lazy and don't do cut out or other fussy cookies. I guzzled coffee yesterday.
DeleteHappy birthday to your son! Fingers crossed that he's able to wrap up his work project & get home for the holidays.
ReplyDeleteI made cardamom bread, and have it in the freezer, ready to bring to my parents next week. I've tossed around making truffles or something else, but will likely skip, as I will be the person who eats most of it, I'm sure. :-)
Your bread sounds so good. It's nice to have a traditional bread.
DeleteIt's a weird feeling being the mother of "a man" isn't it (because let's face it, that's what they are), but I hope your son has a wonderful birthday even if you can't be with him! And I did a double-take at One Family's recipe too, but then they sell a chocolate bar here that's very similar to it. It's VERY rich but absolutely delicious!
ReplyDeleteWhy I bought pecans is beyond me. I had them for a different treat and thought I needed two.
DeleteI just gave away four pounds because I can no longer eat them! You certainly have a lot of treats to make. It makes me tired thinking of all that work in the kitchen. Well, the standing part overwhelms me just thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteDo you have pistachios lying around? Lol
DeleteHappy Birthday to your son! :) My mom still finds it hard to believe that her oldest (me) is 54 and her youngest is 51!
ReplyDeleteGood work on the shopping!
Sending you vibes of efficiency, willpower and concentration to get your policy work done (I do a lot of similar work as you, I think). You can do it, Sam!
My mom was wowed when each of us "little girls" as the three youngest were called turned 40. She passed away before we all turned 50. I'm a program administrator, in charge of a statewide funding stream, so do a lot of policy and budget work- often very much to support or refute proposed changes, and with fast turnaround.
DeleteHappy Birthday to your big boy!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your work project and all that kitchen slavery, it'll all be worth it on the end. xxx
Secret- my treats are pretty much one bowl easy stuff. The truffles are the only real effort.
DeleteHappy Birthday Boy! You are still so young!
ReplyDeleteBut aren't we all! I got a quick chat in with him. He's actually out of town until Sunday.
