This year, Friday is a no holds barred, anything I care to write about day. Theme days step aside for my rants, theories, and queries on topics occupying space in my head. No rants this week folks, but my brain's on overdrive.
Dollar Tree
Between Thursday, February 10 and Saturday the 19th, my local Dollar Tree made the jump from all things $1.00 to $1.25. it made me wonder what might still be worth buying there, and what wasn't. As part of our shopping, prior to knowing the price increase, I got a few basics. Altogether, I spent $20.45. Nine days earlier I would have spent $16.36 on the same items, obviously a 25% increase. I stopped for convenience as our store is right by the Salvation Army and I needed dental floss and my toothpaste. It got me thinking though, is there any reason to shop there, price wise?
The specific Colgate toothpaste I buy, is still lower by 72¢ for the same size paste and $1.72 less for the gel. Reach Dental floss; it's now 28¢ more at DT compared to Walmart, but still better than Target or the grocery store. Target's killing me with their prices! Greeting cards, basic wrapping papers, party plates and napkins, and other things still will be deals, if you don't mind limited selection. The movie theater size candy will be hit or miss. My local grocery store routinely has bins for 99¢ or $1. I thought this DT change and comparison was worth mentioning, but prices be will vary across the country. I'll pay attention now when I'm out and about and see when it makes sense to stop.
Packing for Travel
Disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, and N95 masks, vaccination cards-check times four. My first time flying in two years, same for my girls. I didn't travel specifically with disinfectant wipes or masks before but likely this will be my norm for a while. Covid aside, travelling to different places, being around people of unknown and questionable health practices, and no wonder I pick up colds and bugs often when away from home. We've all seen the person blow their nose repeatedly with the same tissue, then touch multiple places our hands could touch.
I want to travel light, comfortable clothes, yet not sloppy. I'll layer for the plane itself, but the forecast doesn't look especially warm anyway. We'll be walking a lot so that's ok with me to be coolish. I got a pack of pain relief patches for my knee. I still need Breath Rights so the girls don't kick me out of the room as when I am really tired, I snore. We only have a couple set plans where times are involved, but many places we want to go. None of us have been inside the Washington Monument and it now allows booking for next day slots at 10:00, so plan for this. I'm excited to see a colleague/ friend from my DC board meeting days. We're meeting up for coffee, but she's got a lot going on with two young kids and a recent promotion.
Wrapping Up
I'm not sure what else is on my mind to talk about with any coherence. Today will be a lot at work to make sure people know where to find things that will answer questions in my absence. It was a hard week before vacation with Monday being a holiday and Thursday a mandatory full professional development day, so I tried squeezing two weeks worth of work and meetings into three business days. One of my colleagues said she had a meeting response decline saying, "I end my day at 4:30." It was another supervisor/manager. After our first inclination to drop jaw, our second thought was "good on you". I really want to model that as well-start my days at 7:30 and end at 5:00, take every other Friday off. March will be hard to break into that schedule, but I'm setting my sights on April. New quarter, new boundaries.
Finally, as I read and listen to the local, national and world news, this song keeps coming into my head. For a little world love, I'm sharing a YouTube video of an anthem for hope by the Five Stairsteps. Please add your Friday thoughts on anything. As someone commented, it saved the galaxy.
Your trip sounds so fun! I'm sure this is also on your travel packing list, but don't forget snacks for the airport/flights! We found that 1) the prices at the airport (always expensive) are now crazy insane and 2) lines are longer than usual due to the labor shortage. We were at the airport with plenty of time last weekend, and still couldn't get (hot) food for the flight for the kids. Luckily, I'd packed ski snacks, so they just ate their way through that.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous trip!
Snacks/ portable breakfast and then dinner Friday will be a must. Thanks for tips.
DeleteOur $ store, Dollarama, raised their prices a few years ago. I still like shopping there. I don't buy much canned goods, but what I do buy is a good deal. I buy a lot of paper goods there and cleaning supplies.
ReplyDeleteI've not heard of that store. I can't see making special stops any more
DeleteHave a great weekend Sam and enjoy your trip!
ReplyDeleteThank you. We will.
DeleteDitto flights. Daughter and her Hubs flight to the wedding was cancelled the day before they were suppose to leave. Luckily we all got on it and rebooked them so they got in on time.
ReplyDeleteHave fun. Check out the Spy Museum as I'm told it is excellent(it wasn't there my last trip to DC.).
We're still deciding our days, but that could be fun.
DeleteI’ve not been in our Dollar Tree since before the pandemic. I have been looking online though to see what they offer. Your trip sounds like so much fun. Stay safe while you are there.
ReplyDeleteOurs is conveniently located so easy access. I'll likely stop less.
DeleteHope you have a fabulous trip!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Laurie. Cautiously preparing.
DeleteI have little to no motivation to go to DT. Things I buy there tear up or are just trash. I buy cards cheaper elsewhere. The shelf stable milk was only $1, so I might go back for that. Besides, there is no electric cart, so I don't often feel I can stand the pain of shopping!
ReplyDeleteThere's that. It's not a store everyone likes.
DeleteRussia/Ukraine. Putin can't do it absent of China. The U.S., and the previous president particularly, should have heavily fined any company which moved its operations to China. Any Cadillac drivers here? Just an example. Corporate greed has contributed to this world situation more than anything else.
ReplyDeleteSo, what can I, a little U.S. citizen do? What I can do is NOT buy things that contribute to this situation, be it Cadillacs (we got rid of ours when that happened, btw) or stuff from the big box stores who make their profit, by and large, by stocking their stores with good from....China. It's *VERY* difficult, and I don't always succeed. I know it's easy to think "Hey, it's just a greeting card printed there" or, "I really do *need* some new glassware, how much damage is that amount really doing?" Well, over the course of a day, over the course of a country's population, it's doing A LOT of damage. These corporations have capitalized on our thoughtless spending habits and need for immediate gratification. Sure, I could use a new toilet bowl brush--I'm sick of getting my hands in my work. But, when I read that Ukrainian parents are sewing tags with their kids' blood types into their clothing, I can take a deep breath, and scrub away. There are enough things I *need* that make me guilty already.
You once said your daughter only buys ethically made clothing. Imagine if *everyone* of our socio-economic means took just 1/4 of the consideration your daughter uses in her apparel shopping, and applied it across the board to our entire method of household shopping. There are times when my kids don't like it one bit, sure. My response: Tell it to the Marines. (Remember that ad?) Might be even more meaningful as the months go on.
Meant to start this rant with: "What's on *MY* mind." I realize it looks positively barking mad without that intro!
DeleteSince I developed diabetes, I am in a panic most of the time as I realize much of our medicine is manufactured in China. We need someone like Eva Perone to bring manufacturing back to America.
DeleteAck. No. Do you know *anything* at all about her? NO!
DeleteMeg B, Rant away- I can't disagree with a thing. We get complacent in the US, go for easy, for cheap, but at what cost. I appreciate the open reminders that choices have consequences, little and big, cumulative and major.
DeleteMeg- Did you comment on wrong thread? I don't understand the last comment.
DeleteOh- you meant to PP and Eva Perone.
DeleteToday was my "finish that balcony project already!" day and I did just that. Happily got rid of quiet a bit of stuff and I am feeling like a heavy weight is lifted off my shoulders. Enjoy your visit!
ReplyDeleteGetting projects done is the best feeling. Now I'm sure you will start another.
DeleteI had a colleague who always used to get into work really early - she was a true earlybird. One day she simply arrived on time and her boss said "you're late". Thankfully she thought quickly and answered "nope, I'm just less early". Start as you mean to go on!
ReplyDeleteI can see that with my daughter. She's always ahead of schedule and gets nervous if on time.
DeleteHave a great time, can't wait to hear about it. I think some things will still be worth it, but not all.
ReplyDeleteI just doubt I'll pop in DT much now.
DeleteOur $ store increased prices last fall from $1.25 to $1.50 (Cdn). There are still deals but I've learned not to buy things like sandwich and freezer bags, plastic and tin foil as they are higher priced than Walmart. Funny, we had Target here for a very short time and the prices were simply too high in comparison.
ReplyDeleteThe trip to Washington sounds wonderful. Just a reminder, ensure you wipe your tray as well the head rest and arm rests of your aircraft seat. I have a friend who flies for a Cdn airline and he tells horror stories of what some people do in their seats. And no I won't share them.
Have fun with your daughters! Safe travels.
I've disinfectant wipes ready! Target has really gone up, but I like the stores.
DeleteHello Sam, I am hoping to be able to fly back to the States this summer, so I am going to follow your advice and start investigating the disinfecting products and techniques most effective on an airplane.
ReplyDelete--Jim
I have never been to a dollar store; it is something I would like to experience if only to have a look-see.
