Positively Tuesday- Reset Edition

The National Gallery

I took yesterday off, sort of. With all the lost flex days, I changed my February 25 flex day to last Monday, so took vacation hours yesterday. However, I was in stealth mode getting caught up on emails, now ready today to officially be back to work. If I didn't have as much vacation as I do, this would not be smart work/ life balance. I figure though getting ahead of no one expecting me back eases me in. I try to do this whenever I have a full week or more off. With that, I'll start my list of the joys, simple pleasures, and things that make me smile. This will be the last sprinkling from our trip post.

  1. The trip was safe, but we had a multitude of issues, starting with a confusing detour from the airport. Later, I lost my thick jacket on night one. The back pack I used has to be zipped right, and I had stuffed layers of clothes for a walk to the wharf area. It was rolled on top, and fell out, unseen. Why am I adding it here? Well, nothing of value or identifying were in the pockets. It could have been so much worse. I hope it ends up keeping someone warm that could use a warm jacket and gloves, which were in a pocket.
  2. I already mentioned travelling as three adults has different dynamics. I'm grateful for the opportunity of what was likely the last trip as a trio. Life changes constantly. I hope all my kids look back and know that I tried to support them in their decision making, but ultimately let them make their own choices.
  3. Recovered younger daughter's iPhone left in a Lyft Thursday night. I give 5 out of 5 for our Lyft experience this trip. ( Can you see a dumb pattern). Yes, I splurged on five different Lyft rides as my knee was done by Thursday afternoon. Special shout outs to Henry, the hero of Thursday night, and Misael, who was an incredible tour guide as he drove us to a college campus that wasn't very Metro accessible. He described neighborhoods, pointed out landmarks, and was just super friendly without being imposing. The other drivers were good, but other than hello and goodbye/ thank you, not any interaction.
  4. A highlight of the trip was seeing the Pandas at the National Zoo. I've never seen one before and while not the greatest views to get pictures, here's one none the less.
  5. I know our US tax dollars funds a huge amount of the Smithsonian's and monuments, but the access to these treasures is incredible. Our only disappointment was that the Air and Space doesn't open until March 11. We grabbed a ridiculously over priced light lunch at the American History museum, but I consider that a bit of a donation.

  6. I wanted chill and relaxed for plane home. I put Bridesmaids on, and had to hold back bursting out laughing at Melissa McCarthy's character. She is one funny person. And... puppies!
  7. Seeing how happy pup was once home gave me incredible joy. He has to know where I am constantly now. I'm sure he'll settle down to his pattern as my work week resets.
  8. While a week of no cooking is a joy, a simple pleasure was getting back in my kitchen on Saturday making meals and snacks for DH and my daughter.
  9. We had a nice movie night, DH, DD2, and myself. He hadn't seen more than an hour of her last Saturday, and then Sunday morning. We watched The Eternals on Disney Plus. Confusing movie but all set for sequels.
  10. My daughter got back to school safely and I had a chat with my son Sunday night.

I'm happy to be to resume work knowing nothing fell apart while gone. I had one night I needed to get back on something, but it was an easy task. I got sad news that one of my grantee's husband passed away last Sunday at just 55. I've known her for 31 years, practically my whole career. We're the same age and my two oldest are same ages as her two children. It hits home yet again how none of us know what and when in life  can change forever. I keep hoping I'm making the most of each day and not sweating the stuff that really doesn't matter. I'm the navigator of my life and can choose to get caught up in what's not fair or difficult, or can try to improve it. I'm well aware of the world situation, and in other head space, I focus on being informed, alert, and conscientious. This blog is for respite, and Tuesday specifically for that break from sadness and despair, inflation, and politics. I hope you have a positively Tuesday.

  2. Glad you had a nice trip with your daughters.
I can't tell you how many times I've watched Bridesmaids. It is one of my go to's for a good laugh.
Sad to hear about your co workers husband. Yes, the future is unknown so best to make the most out of every single day.
Hope your first day back to work is a good one.

    1. It was hard not laughing out loud on the plane. Yes, need to remember on my whiny days how truly Lucky I am.

  3. So glad that you had a good trip with lots of positives. Love the pictures. We think the Smithsonian museums are great, and what a cute pic of the panda. Sorry about the lost jacket, but hopefully it is keeping someone warm.
Hope you have a good work week without too much stress.

    1. It would be a shame if jacket wasn't put to use. Oh boy was yesterday full on, but in the vein of appreciation, I have a good job to be busy with.

Your Positive Tuesday is a lovely read, thank you x

I would have had the meal at the Smithsonian also!

  10. I'd have been annoyed about that coat but like you say, hopefully someone is getting some relief from having a nice warm coat. And I'm so sorry to hear about that young man dying. 55 is so darn young to be dying and you're right, it does bring it home how much we need to seize the day!

    1. I need to do more seizing! I really feel bad for this woman- she's never been a particularly happy person, and the last year has been so hard.

  11. Bridesmaids is such a funny and sweet movie about female friendship - I love it, and I'm glad it gave you joy (and puppies!).

I admire your spin on losing your jacket - it totally could have been worse! And your appreciation for your lovely Lyft driver - it just goes to show, that there are good people out there. Thank you for recognizing him.

I'm so sorry, Sam, to hear of your friend's husband passing away. My dad died at 55 and as I turn that age this year (ack!) it feels even younger and far too soon.

I love museums, and how awesome to be able to see such big ones! Lol, their restaurants are always ridiculously expensive! But that's part of the vacation and such a nice treat, isn't it?

I regret not being mindful of my last vacation with both parents - you never know when something WILL be the last, so appreciating these moments in the here and now is so important.

Sending you good vibes and a big virtual hug.

    1. Oh the museums are so wonderful. Life needs to be fully appreciated. A lost jacket is a nothing. I'll take the good vibes.

  12. I'm sorry to read about your grantee's husband. My dad was 55 when he died, 3 days before my 30th birthday. It changed my attitude to life aswell as all the other ways. Me and J were very upset by the death of Shane Warne last week at the age of 52. We were fortunate to see him play cricket in 2005, and his death was a shock, but also yet another reminder to try our utmost to live rather than just exist, and to find joy in the everyday.
My positive this Tuesday is that following her tests this morning, KL does not have gestational diabetes.

    1. I'm happy for your daughter's good results. That's a concern when there's other health issues to watch. Even being in my 40s when zi lost my parents, it still felt too soon.

  13. I am glad the trip with your daughters turned out great. Too bad about the lost coat, and you just bought it. Maybe you can buy one on sale this spring for next year. My knee would not last a block. My back would not last twenty feet!

    1. My knee was pounding some days. We averaged at least 15,000 steps a day. Now I'm trying to keep it up to 10000.

  14. I am so sorry for your friend. That is so young to lose someone. I think lyfts are totally worth it. We always use them when we have elderly with us. Not that you are elderly., but bum knee the same. I wish I could be in DC right now it is such an awesome place. Losing that jacket was a bummer.

    1. I wouldn't have enjoyed the last 24 hours of the trip without the Lyft rides do expensive but worth it. Cherry blossom s should be out in a few weeks. Just starting to see budding.

  15. Sorry forgot to add that adding a get home day to a vacation is a must and something I am going to start doing. You just need a day to get back into the groove and rest. Taking a vacation means you need to come back and have a vacation. At least it is for me.

  16. Sorry for your grantee's husband. I am 55 too and my father had passed when he was 54. As we enter the scary ages, I try to make the best of my time in this world. Political and economical crises do not help the mood but, we need to try. I tell my SIS that I love her at the end of every phone call. If something ever happens to either of us, I want that to be the last thing I said to her.

  17. Positive vibes aplenty. I'm sorry about your coat and your colleague's tragic loss, a reminder that life is not a dress rehearsal and each day should be lived out to the full, who knows what's around the corner for any of us. xxx
