My Week in W's: Hacking Edition

Hacking as in coughing! I finally contacted care through the Virtuwell system as my doctors office couldn't get be seen until 12/1 unless urgent care. I have a prescription for those little beady pills (benzonatate) for the next five days. I had that once before and they were game changers so fingers crossed. I'm also looking for life hacks; recipe hacks, money saving hacks, anything that makes my world easier these days. With that awkwardly worded intro, it's time for my week in W's.

 What's Top of Mind:
DH is at the lake place. Censors went off for freeze risk. Turns out the furnace is out and he stayed overnight waiting for the emergency guy to come. The gas fireplace was working fine, but obviously can't just be left on. He said he'd camp out in the living room for the night. He was there for the furnace check and no problems noted a few months ago. Always something but shouldn't be on a five year old furnace.

Where I've been:
I felt well and my cough subsided so joined trivia. But, leaving and driving home, back it came, plus I spent half the night up. Shoot, the young dog even slept the whole night too. An opportunity for good sleep missed. I also got my photo Christmas cards picked up.

 Where I’m going:
Today is the celebration of life for DH's friend.I hope DH got rest despite the upheaval as it will be a hard day. Then Sunday it's the kick off party for the year long celebration of the 60th birthday for a family member. I'm being a bit rude, but it's a birthday, not putting a person on the moon, but we'll be friendly and gracious.

What I'm eating:
After multiple days of leftovers and not feeling like cooking, baked potatoes, tator tots and pizza have been easy meals.

What I’m watching:
I binged watched through the weekend  Call the Midwife and the last Doc Martin season through episode 5. I felt lousy with my cold so not feeling guilty a bit for so much tv. There was more football on the screen too.

What I’m reading:

I am reading a few research reports on the amount of investment yields optimal results for low income children. I'm doing some cost modeling of my program in comparison to different interventions.

What I’m listening to:

Right now? Pup is deep sleeping and snoring. Otherwise very quiet as he and I are alone. The furnace is running as the high is expected to be only in single digits.

 What I’m planning:

Christmas planning I suppose. I'm trying to get excited regardless of missing my kids.

Who needs a good slap:

I hate to keep raising politics, but come on. Dislike and negate every liberal, democrat, woke person in America, but anyone who'd put any thoughts to supporting another Trump candidacy has lost the farm.

Who Deserves Knuck's (Fist Bump):

I do for shoveling on Monday with two dogs. It wasn't a lot, nor heavy, but our driveway is long. DH appreciated not having to do it when he got home. I also got the garbage and recycling out Tuesday night. Talk about figuring out a hack. I held the shovel pushing while holding the leesh and amused the young dog to tire him out, but not letting him run or jump.

What’s making me smile:

I think they are moving on, have to with this cold surge, but here's the last of the ducks, holding on to their pond home a few more days. The shallow side of the pond is iced over. The dogs are fascinated seeing the ducks, especially when one or more fly in or fly out.

That's my week. Have you any life hacks to share?

  1. The only life hack I can think of at the moment is to just keep things simple.

  2. Oh, the hacking. I went to Walmart last night, needing a new umbrella for DD (bought her a cheap one not sure if she would use it and she says it’s her number one college must have. The cheap one has fallen apart, so hence the upgrade), fresh cranberries that I forgot for dinner with my dad and some treat sticks for baby bunny to chew on. Everyone in the store was coughing, sneezing or arguing with their partner. I couldn’t get out fast enough. I became very overwhelmed at checkout and even forgot my receipt. I went to lunch this week, and quickly ran into the mall to use a nice Bath and Body Works coupon. It’s Light Up Night everywhere this weekend but too cold for my liking and I’m open to close all weekend and now short staffed as the other manager called off with suspected hand, foot and mouth disease, which I’m terrified of getting. So I’ll hang out at home tonight and put up the tree. We do have our first college girl back at work today and I can’t wait to catch up with her, although we’re going to be so busy. I should probably go in a little early today but I don’t know if I have it in me. Thank goodness for the censor at the cabin, that could have been a disaster if gone unnoticed and I’m glad you picked up a script for that cough and you can get yourself feeling better. That’s a lot of ducks! JoAnn

    1. The cabin issue caused a lot of wear and tear on poor DH. I hope the arguing and I'll eas in stores is not a sign of times to come.

  3. Sorry you still have that dreadful cough. I hope the meds work so you can catch up on your sleep.
I keep a supply of spicy Chicken soup loaded with ginger and garlic in the freezer. It always warms our soul and makes us feel better.
The only hack I can think of is breathe and take it one day at a time.

    1. My prescription seems to be helping. I will remember to just inhale and exhale!

  4. So sorry you're hacking. That sounds miserable. Fingers crossed you get some rest & recover this weekend!

I made it through a super rough work week, and next week (fingers crossed) should be much easier. Our team does a no meetings week during holidays. Hurrah!

I'm ready to enjoy the weekend. No soccer games (Nick is injured, & Sam's team is done for the season). I'll work out in the mornings, & then run some errands & putter or bake.

  5. That cough sounds dreadful - and of course it can be embarrassing if you're out and about can't it. Have you tried hot toddies (tea, honey, lemon and whiskey or rum or brandy - or all three)? I guess if you added all three you wouldn't care much one way or another if you were still coughing though would you. Take care and I hope your miracle medicine works again this time!

    1. I've tried all the hot drinks, but no alcohol. Just can't when I take OTC stuff. The prescription is doing it's thing.

  6. So sorry you are still hacking. There are so many people who are ill that I know of it's not funny. Jacob was home Friday from school with a fever and aches. I hope your medicine works for you!

    1. I've been lucky to not get fever or chills. I hope Jacob gets better quickly.

  7. I hope your medications restore you to good health, it’s hard being ill at such a busy time of year, it’s easy to get rundown with o much going on.
I have no hacks to offer, it’s been a hard slog week. A funeral, an injury, lots of travel resulting from them. Looking forward to next week, that’s bound to be a better one. Take care, Megan

  8. You tried the Vicks Vaporub on soles of your feet with socks on? Or, is that too weird for you? lol
Does the sensor alert your phone remotely?
Even the religious leaders are saying they were mislead.

    1. I've not done the Vicks on feet. The alarms and sensors can be used by phone. He checks things daily.

  9. I’m trying also to get into the Christmas mood but barely there. Im going to double check with my son, with a newly built cabin that is one on my big concerns!!! Before with our old dump it was seasonal and winterized. We have a smart thermostat and he can check the temp on his phone app but he was going to look to see if he can set an alarm (I’m sure he forgot). I’m in Minnesota and so fed up with our state/politics/. I can’t even go there. I’m no specific party (anymore, disillusioned) but work in homecare, mental health, on a reservation, and with refugees. It’s talk, no action or extreme financial mismanagement (Covid child lunch program!) Because of streams of work I’m down line on multiple DHS bulletins, after 45 years the collaboration of new wheel inventions, and the dollars spent and the bureaucracy ok now I’m on a rant and will stop ha!

    1. Don't just listen to the rhetoric on the lunch fraud. Criminals commit crimes. Fraud was identified and actions happened, but the criminal justice system moves slow. There was not fiscal mismanagement, but pure criminal activity. I won't make public employees punching bags. The apps and security are essential to secure a cabin or vacation home.

  10. I'm trying to get into the Christmas mode, but it has been very difficult due to the upcoming surgery. However, thank you for making me laugh! I agree with who needs a good slap...I'm sorry but I just can't deal with crazy right now. Really??? Who thought it was a good idea the FIRST time?!?

  11. I forgot, but once when I felt bad and could not quit coughing, I had walking pneumonia. It was horrible.

    1. The NP said I likely developed bronchitis. I'm not feverish. I've had pneumonia and it's wretched.

  12. I hope you feel much better sooner rather than later.
I have never in my life had to shovel snow. I am not sure I would even know how to begin!

    1. I hate shoveling and so does my husband. When the kids were here of course we could divide and conquer. I think we should hire it out for big snows, but clueless as to find someone.

  13. I hope you will feel better soon. Some people use lemon, honey and fresh ginger tea for persistent coughs. I tried that as well quite a few times. It helped in some cases but not always. Sorry about your DH's friend. It must be difficult and sad for him.

    1. Every combination of warm tea like drinks provides a bit of soothing, but nothing's stopped the persistent fits of coughing like this medication does- benzonatate it's called. I have a five day prescription so hope that does the trick by Wednesday.
