Friday Free for All-Winter Views

A local barn- so pretty with the wreath.
This was pre snowfall.

Woo wee did we get snow. I was pretty glad we had to go no where yesterday. My daughter took the dog midday Wednesday and worked from home, so just the three of us here. DH was out shoveling at 6:00 and said there's more than he cleared yesterday. I haven't talked to my daughter today as it's early. A nice neighbor used his 4 wheeler to partially plow her driveway yesterday. Maybe he'll do the kindness today. It's a single car drive, but steep and long.

I hope the time was enough since snow stopped for roads to be cleared as I'm heading to Minneapolis later this morning. I probably won't stay all afternoon in the office. There's an event and I have to get my office badge which acts as my entry to the working areas of the building, but it's all set to wind down about 2:00. We've still just had a soft opening to the building. There's so many things not quite right to do more than a day there, and there's little point being in the office if no one else is there.

As it's Friday, my mind just meanders and fingers tap to follow. All the snow sure makes it pretty...until the muck and brown comes. We shovel a potty shot for the dogs, and I will intentionally do it a bit further away from the front door. I snapped a few random pictures. My skills have not improved.

Other Doings

I've got a pretty major list to get done this weekend, and weeknights heading into next. Presents to wrap, treats to make, final greeting cards to put in the mail. I've misplaced my address book. Some I've found through other means, but I've done the old, return a card when we get a card action. Many I'll just hand out Christmas Eve to siblings and family. I'm trying to reduce postage prices too, so misplaced address book helps this.

I'm spending Saturday night with my daughter. Her town has a lights display at a fair grounds. Before the bitter cold comes Sunday, we thought we'd go see it with her dog. Sunday is a dog park fundraiser we'll take the puppy too. It would be great for her to have access to one closer to her. We have one, and I like to use the side smaller one with pup.

A Hard Time of Year

It can be a hard time of year for people. We reached out to one of two remaining cousins on my dad's side to come Christmas Eve. She was happy to be included. While she has cousins on her dad's side, plus nieces and nephews, she said she's been spending quiet Christmas Eve alone since our aunt died a few years ago. We had assumed she was with her siblings families. She doesn't drive now so I'll pick her up, and a sister that drives through her town will bring her home. She has Christmas Day plans with friends.

Our friends just had their almost 16 year old dog die last weekend. She was a sweet girl. My sister still mourns her little fur girl too. Sadness feels heightened when everywhere you look merry and bright might be crammed down your throat. I want to keep this in mind and make sure people have space to grieve whatever sadness they are dealing with.

Wrap Up

  • DS got his Swiss Colony treats. He said, " Cool, the little cake bites. "
  • I was sucked into the possible fun of snow yesterday and decided to get one more gift for DH. I'll try it out too and get my own set if we like it; snowshoes and poles. If we can't beat it, let's embrace the snow. I mentioned a snowmobile after he retires and we can spend winter time at the lake. He said he'd rather do cross country skiing or snowshoeing, and there you have it.
  • DD2 has her last final, might be done when I write this. She's off to London until Wednesday.

That's about it on my mind. I hope your Friday and weekend ahead is productive or lazy whichever you'd prefer.

  1. We’re predicted to get a few inches next week, and I’m already not looking forward to it. Our first snow was beautiful, stuck to the grass not the roads and fell all afternoon. That’s the only kind I like. Working a long day today, and then a trip this evening to the Dollar Tree with DD and perhaps to Crumbl, and finally I have a weekend off. I still need to do my dad’s Christmas cards, I don’t think I’m sending any this year. We’ll see. JoAnn

    1. I've heard Crumbl cookies are pretty delicious. I'm over the snow whining as it's just inevitable and trying to see the beauty, at least for December.

  2. I’ve done the get a card return a card too and have for the last few years. I looked at the price of a stamp this week and it is already or is going up to 60 cents a letter! I used my last few stamps to mail the cards I needed to mail and probably won’t be out to get more right now. I can order them online though and I do like that as the variety is good.

Your snow is beautiful! I love it as long as I don’t have to get out in it.

    1. It's quite expensive now to exchange cards but I do still love the tradition. People I see will get hand delivered cards. Shoveling has been a lot for both DH and I.

  3. It looks so pretty! It's uncommonly cold here with just a light dusting of the white stuff, I can't wait for it to melt and be able to walk at a normal pace again rather than cling to Jon's arm and totter about like an old lady!
Thank you for caring for those to whom Xmas only serves to intensify their loneliness and loss. xxx

    1. I wore fashionable shoes into the office, but regretted when walking across the parking lot. I think the shoulds of Christmas can go to the side. It saddens me to have thisxseason fill some with loneliness so if I can help a bit, I'll try.

  4. No snow here but the temperatures are supposed to take a nose dive starting tomorrow and continue to get lower throughout next week. Tis the season for it. Tomorrow is a shopping day and then I'm not stepping inside a store until sometime in January. Enjoy your Friday!!

  5. Those are very pretty scenes! However, we are of the opinion that once it snows, we want it to just melt and go away. The longest time I have ever spent in snow was for a week in 1993. I was snowed in alone and only walked across the side street to my neighbor's house who was in her 90s. She needed me for company since her daughter was too far away.
I need snowshoes and poles for the trek I made a block away to give a friend birthday candles. I fell down in every yard (in front of six or more houses) on the way there and back. I am quite sure I supplied entertainment for all the people trapped inside. Then, I fell down the side steps, concrete, and landed like a bug on my back. The only thing that gave me the strength to finally get up and crawl on my hands and knees back into the house was that I knew no one could hear me screaming and I would freeze in my yard!
That was thirty years ago. I would not survive a fall like that now. So, snow is pretty, but I would rather it melt by morning. And, the brown yuck is not so pretty.

    1. The steps, by the way, were concrete, about 6 hard steps.

    2. You only lived there a week, or you only went outside that one week? I think I understand what you mean- that particular week was the longest. Oh gosh, that's a story to tell! It can be treacherous just walking a block to get to the park. I'm so sorry you had that fall. No wonder you prefer the heat and humidity of the south.

  6. Let me know how you get on with snow-shoeing! I still haven't used mine and in any case I just KNOW I prefer downhill skiing (the other stuff is just too much like hard work)!

    1. I didn't grow up skiing and by the time we were married, DH didn't do much anymore. I'll keep you posted on our adventures in snow shoes.

  7. It has been snowing here all day. Thankfully I don't have to go out at all until Monday! I'll just hibernate thru the weekend. Be careful out there.

    1. I'll do a lot of hibernation once mud January hits, so as long as I've stuff to do, I'll be out and about. Stay safe and warm.

  8. Stealing a phrase from The Frugal Girl, I'm so burned out, I'm crispy right now. Work is an epic mess. It's our busiest time of the year anyway, and then factor in a bunch of proposed changes for 2023 that need immediate review & sign off, plus our company added a performance management system - in December. It's a huge amount of work, depending on team size, and my people managers are really unimpressed.

So, other top of mind things:
-I'm so happy to have an evening at home tonight. Last night was a lovely dinner out with friends, and Wednesday was a soccer game. We're planning on playing rummy, opening gifts (we don't take them with us) & having an appetizer style dinner tonight.
-Nick has a game tomorrow, field arrival at 7:30 am. We've gotten so unlucky this season!
-I was able to switch my workout class to noon tomorrow
-My sister & I are going to attempt to attend the same workout studio class on Christmas Eve, before we head to my parents. The rest of the time will be pretty much cooking, eating & relaxing, so we're looking forward to working out together first.

    1. My daughter likes a good workout before family events too. I'm sorry work is stressful. It sounds like much is imposed stress for stress sake!

    1. We'll be getting more too .sure. It's needed for spring planting. We're coming off a draught so I shouldn't complain.
