Dreams of spring and summer. Oh, if I close my eyes, I can picture myself with an ice tea, sitting outside a Caribou Coffee in my favorite St Paul neighborhood.
In my head I am lounging at the lake, pup having found a cool spot in the shade of the chaise. Or, I'm on my own back yard deck with a Vodka lemonade. I can hear the kids yelling and laughing on the play ground, soaking up the last of the sun-which of course is out until well after 9:00.
In my mind, I'm strolling along the banks of the Mississippi, or one of the inlets. Everyone I pass is happy and enjoying the warmth of a perfect late spring day.
But here's really what is going on outside. I'm about to brave the cold and my commute. It is mid January, and I'm trying for humor to get through the next two long months.
But then, if I close my eyes, not while driving mind you, and take a deep breath, I remind myself of the beauty of this season. Maybe, reality isn't quite so bad.
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven."
ReplyDeleteMy favorite verse for just about any purpose/time in life.
DeleteUgh. I can't stand the cold. Never could. I moved from New England as soon as I could. DH, though, couldn't stand the heat of the summers in the southwest, though, so here we are in the Puget Sound. It was a compromise on his retirement. Typically it's no colder than low 40's, and rarely snows. When I get beleaguered over the gray skies, I remind myself that you don't have to shovel rain.
ReplyDeleteI'm good with it, until mid January, then get very weary of everything, But, you can't help but see a new fallen snow covering the landscape and see the simple beauty. If it is a sunny day, even more so.
DeleteThis snow and 2 degree F weather is not what I signed up for when I stayed in the South.
ReplyDeleteThat is cold for that far south-so sorry. We actually hit 39 yesterday, but we have multiple reports of foul weather this weekend.
DeleteWinter has its own beauty. Here it is generally not a snow beauty but we do have wonderful skeleton trees mixed with tons of green pines and other year round green shrubs and trees. (thank you magnolias) Fortunately for us today starts the warm up and we should be in the 50's tomorrow just in time to head for the lake.
ReplyDeleteI've never experienced winter in the south. I wonder how I would adjust. I'm not a fan of November after the color of fall is gone, but if there is enough pop of color, I'd be good.
DeleteI tried to explain to Rebecca on one of our last walks that there is beauty to be found in winter. We need to focus on that and not necessarily on the crappy, snow covered roads or sub zero temps.
ReplyDeleteI need new snow boots so I can truly get out to where the good stuff of winter is. I've been mostly just walking paths and the neighborhood, and then the slush and dirt mar the beauty.
DeleteYikes! I hope the crushed car scenario is just in your head. How did THAT happen?
ReplyDeleteHah! Stock photo, but every day I see multiple cars i the oddest positions having gone of the roads. So, not quite that bad, but it is a full on season on traffic accidents and stranded vehicles.
DeleteI had to use the broom to sweep the snow off my car yesterday morning before I left. About 4 inches of it I guess. And now it's raining, and raining and .... you get the picture right. I have never minded the cold luckily but I am so looking forward to spring, the best season of all in my books. Anna
ReplyDeleteSweeping cars before you can go anywhere is a major pain. We are supposed to get the rain Saturday, switching to snow on Sunday. Yes, I long for spring, but trying to appreciate what god has given us now.
DeleteThere are beautiful scenes in each season; just sometimes we have to look a little harder and a little longer lol! Having said that I long for spring!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Simple pleasure, animal prints in new fallen snow.
DeleteWe've finally had a few days of winter sun in my part of the UK. It definitely raises the spirits! Jx
ReplyDeleteWinter sun is glorious!
