It is the shortest day of the year for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere-the Winter Solstice. Tomorrow, daylight in incrementa minutes will be added. It sure felt like the shortest day this morning. No alarm on my phone, but my internal alarm still had me awake at 5:00. It was hours before we had light, 7:46 to be exact. Sunset will be 4:34! Kids aren't even home from school, if they are going to school in a building, by then.. I don't know much about meteorology, or astronomy, and definitely not much about the two combined. ALl I know is that the fact that we are gaining a minute or two of sunlight a day from here on out is what keeps me relatively sane in January and February.
This year, there is supposed to a bright visible star in the sky tonight, some calling it the Christmas Star or Star of Bethlehem. It's going to be so much more visible than a typical star, brighter than it supposedly has been for 800 years, due to Jupiter and Saturn being closer than they have been in centuries. Technically not a star at all, but I won't doubt anyone's beliefs this year as all need to believe what works for their own faith and spirituality. It's a reason to get DH's massive Telescope outside tonight-maybe we'll have better luck than we did chasing after Northern Lights. Will you be doing any looking tonight?
Nothing to report on the snow front. We had a few flakes, but this little bit that is on the ground near the fire ring is more just a frosty mist than flakes that accumulated. Pup was intrigued with it yesterday.
We've not had other sightings of snow, or Christmas to come either as we sort of hunkered down yesterday. DD2's bestie stopped over to see her yesterday and I was able to send home treats and her families card. Her mom is one of the "mom's", and I miss not seeing all my girls. I wouldn't see her much anyway as she is a photographer and did a bang up business with holiday and family photos in November and up until yesterday, after which she declared herself off-duty. I suppose like holiday decorations being early and maxed out, family photos when a family can get together, and to send as gifts when they can't, are another mark of Christmas 2020.
I picked up these cute plates and napkins, two of the plates to use one for cookie trays. I had an idea to do something with both as a craft, and darn if I can remember either. It's like I said to my brother and his wife when I dropped cards and treats off to them (oreo truffles, rolos, and Mounds as different than she makes), and saw her new Tree centerpiece. It looked like someone hot glued a cone shaped styrofoam cone on an old candy dish, then used sweater materials, in different shades of green, to form a tree. Totally cute, easy, and something I could muster up-but, as I said, would mark for a craft that would never get done. I'll stick to looking for ting in distant skies, but who knows? Maybe there will be a craft or two before the year is out. .

Lucky you having a telescope. They must be fabulous at times like this!
ReplyDeleteDH has two-he had to upgrade a while back! Still no luck seeing through the clouds.
DeleteI'll be going out to check out the star tonight too. Stay warm and have a great holiday week!
ReplyDeleteWith all th elcud cover, it didn't get too cold. No sightings.
DeleteWe don't get light here until like 8:20 and then dark about 5pm. I'm glad starting tomorrow it gradually gets more light each day :)
ReplyDeleteWoah-now that is a short day.
DeleteI love those napkins. I was saying to the hubby the other day that we don't really have any nice 'Christmas' pictures to hang up.I think that napkin would be perfect glued to a piece of wood and then Mod Podged. It would make a lovely art piece to bring out each year.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of Christmas frames with our kids picture sin through the years. I love them. We have not had a family picture taken professionally in a lot of years.
Deletelast night right after sunset I went out with binoculars and saw the two planets so close. it was a treat to see them so.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! Too many clouds here.
DeleteWe're having a few sprinkles of snow right now! It's very exciting - we never get snow!
ReplyDeleteI imagine it doe snot stay even when you get it. It is pretty when it falls.
DeleteThe BBC weatherman said that those bright lights in the sky were Santa testing his sleigh headlamps!
ReplyDeleteWe've got a frosty but sunny day forecast for Friday - no snow! xxx
I think we shall get a good walk outside and not have o brave dodging snow plows. It would be nice for a dusting of the white stuff.
