I've decided it is totally within my rights to say I do not like gardening. I do not like yard work-just the bare necessities to keep things not looking like a horrible jungle. The endless weeding of flower beds, tapering bushes, and pruning things just so is not my cup of tea. I like big trees. I don't mind raking in the fall and spring, so trees are great. Sadly, our big maple tree in the front yard looks like it is not going to bounce back this spring. It looked sad last year compared to the full and green trees in the neighborhood. This year, I can see buds, but none have opened; May 18th, none have opened. It has always been a later tree, but this is beyond the past years. We lost a beautiful river birch about a decade ago-one of two trees we planted that first summer after moving here in 1991. The pines in the back look horrible as well. They all were planted the following summer. One spot never took to any trees-we planted three-all died within the 1st to third year. That's where we now have the fire pit. Two more died in the last decade as well.
My idea of gardening is to buy hanging baskets, or getting the smallest little pots of flowers and replanting in bigger pots. I tried to fool myself last year that I could have a garden. This year I am being more realistic. DH is going to get a couple small trees for his Father's Day gift. One will be something that flowers-ideas please. One will be another maple. We will likely not live here long enough to see the maple grow and develop into a beautiful shady tree, but we'll give it a start. But I planted a few pots. I need to pick up some more as my ratio is wrong-you'll see where and I'll hope to remedy tonight, but as I add my 10 simple pleasures for the week, I'll smatter in my little touch of spring flowers. Here's what has been making me happy the last week.
- Well, let's start with the yellow flowers that keep sprawling out in my rock area. I've shared these before, but they are getting even more full. These were the unexpected new growth on the ground came from the remnants of the Mother's Day hanging basket from last year.
- I got my new eyeglasses, a week earlier than they said they would come. Even with picking out frames on the lower end cost, but what I wanted, they came to $640! I have a strong prescription, so the lenses, to get them very thin, were $375 alone. But I got progressive bifocals, anti glare, and the added light filter for screen use. I'm very happy so far with the results. I have plenty in my spending account since I rolled forward the max of $500 on top of what I put in my account to cover copays, and deductibles.
- The car show returned to our town this weekend, moved from Saturday nights to third Sundays. DD2 and I went down-DH was trying to stay off his foot after a morning putzing around the house. It was nice seeing people we knew and the weather could not have been better.
- This is a mean one, but watching pup chase a fly that got in the house gave me a good chuckle. He jumps and bats, and hunts it down when it moved.
- Homemade guacamole last Wednesday night with our girls dinner was absolutely delicious. I have to watch the number of avocados-I know they are resource dense to grow and transport, but we love it so much.
- Sale, two for one on our favorite BBQ sauce, Sweet Ray's. I know it is probably very generic tasting, but we like it and go through a lot spring through fall-well, year round but even better on grilled food.
- I've been brewing a jar a day of pomegranate Good Earth tea for a refreshing ice tea. We add lemon juice and just a touch of sweetener. It is so refreshing. It is so much better than paying $3-$4 for a coffee shop version. The price went up, but I can still get 18 tea bags for $4.39, and I use three for a quart jar, which yields, well, four ice teas, or 19 cents a tea. In comparison, DD2 spent $5 on a macha green tea at one of the food trucks at the car show.
- It was nice seeing my daughters friend from when she lived in Wisconsin who came for the weekend, and then at the car show, DD2's bestie. It gives me joy to see my kids have really good people as friends.
- I found two dresses I was happy with of the four I ordered. I hate shopping and even more shopping for dresses I feel comfortable at at events where there is a good chance I will be in photos. These, and the light sweaters, and undergarments, are going to be my exceptions to purchasing brand new, non-thrifted items of clothing for the reminder of 2021.
- DH finally found the boat he was looking for at the price he was willing to pay/invest in it. I'm happy for him as it has been a long search.
My stupid squirrels here like everything I plant (or so it seems). Add me to the group of garden averse people. I don't find puttering in the dirt relaxing at all.
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo for the boat find. I know all of you will enjoy it this summer.
It's a cute little boat and will be a good outlet for DH in particular. The pontoon feel like driving an air force carrier and so needless for just one or two people. Thank you for commenting on the gardening bit. It seems so unnatural to others that I don't like the whole gardening vibe. I like outdoor spaces-just not the putting in the dirt.
DeleteYou know it is okay to not like gardening. We all have things that we are just not interested in and that is fine. I am not interested in doing genealogy. I am supposed to be. But I am not. Some day I may have the time and the inclination but not now. I do love to play in the dirt, so I do. I often think we push ourselves to do things we don't really enjoy because we think it is respected of us. Lil sis hates cooking, so she rarely does it.
ReplyDeleteI've not tried too much genealogy. I feel i might get a bit bored-at least my own, though I like history, and studying interesting people.
DeleteSounds like a good positive week. I like your flowers, and I know you will enjoy the splash of color. A boat sounds like so much fun, and I'm sure you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
ReplyDeleteIt's more a looking ahead purchase for retirement years for DH as well. This should be his third to the last summer working, but for this summer, he can play on Thursdays and Sundays, and when he takes a few four day weekends.
DeleteYour iced tea sounds delicious! What about a Japanese maple or a cherry tree?
ReplyDeleteThe neighbors so across the street works in a nursery-is actually positioned to eventually buy the owner out as his own sons do not want the business. I will probably buy through him with a good recommendation. The trees you suggest-just looked at photos, are lovely!
DeleteI think you should plant things that are low maintenance, come back every year, and flower. I hate gardening that is so intense and chores I did last year. These plants may not work where you are. Try dogwood, crape myrtle, azalea, anything from bulbs. I only buy one annual--pink petunias. And, shrubs do not need to be pruned into squares or globes. It is unnatural. I only prune the inside of shrubs once a year to open up the plant to light. I refuse to keep planting every year plants that will need to be replaced the next year. I love flowering trees and shrubs. I would rather sit in a swing and enjoy the day rather than grub around in the dirt.
ReplyDeleteMy problem historically with bulbs ahs been squirrels. I've probably planted around my mail box 10 times! I love that they seem to ignore the hostas where I have them. I can always try again.
DeleteResearch which bulbs squirrels don't like. Stella di Oro are lovely and long lasting. Funny, but squirrels never ate the bulbs I planted or the Hosta.
DeleteI guess I don't care enough to bother.
DeleteI have a love/hate relationship with gardening. I enjoy it but I don't have green thumbs so nothing ever grows as it should lol. Congrats on the boat, that will be fun this summer for sure! Be prepared though, boats are money pits. As much as I enjoyed ours, I was glad when my husband finally sold it.
ReplyDeleteWe've had/have boats. This was just one for our family-him, to putter around and for tubing/skiing. Yes-insurance, maintenance, gas, winterizing-lots of expenses. With me likley never commuting full time again, we figured the trade off won't change out overall expenses, plus, it will add t our personal enjoyment at the lake place that is shared by the entire family-a natural get away!
DeleteI enjoy gardening, but there are plenty of things I don't like that others do (baking is a big ugh for me). There's no good reason to do a hobby you don't like! Spend time on what you like to do. For a colorful tree, maybe a Korean maple, they're hardy for cold winters. The newer crabapple varieties are hardy and not nearly as messy as older varieties, and they flower beautifully. Check out the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum website, they list native trees to the area. Celie
ReplyDeleteThank you for saying this comment. I love baking-could do that all day (and that's why my behind is as it looks). I like the idea of a crab apple but have shied away due to the mess, but perhaps a newer variety as you say. Next doors is lovely-but messy.
DeleteReading this reminded me to water my hanging basket that I got for Mother’s Day! I’m not much of a gardener, I tend to start off strong and then forget about stuff and it slowly wilts away. I had lunch with my mom squad today and it was amazing. One friend bought us all beautiful bouquets from a local florist, another brought cheesecake for dessert. We got takeout from our favorite place and brought our prom and grad pics to show each other. The weather was stunning. I unexpectedly have tomorrow off and will spend it shampooing the carpets and doing a deep clean of the back porch. It’s been an emotional and intense few days. My coworker who had Covid, gave it to her grandma and she passed away from it. My coworker is devastated obviously and we’ve been scrambling yet again to cover her shifts, connect with everyone who wants to donate to send flowers and keep in touch to just be there for her. On top of that, there has been an insane crime spree in the area, arson, murder, police, helicopters, car bombs, we’re talking movie type stuff. If you are interested in reading the details you can search up any Pittsburgh news website and the details unfold there. Way too close for my comfort and we don’t yet know if things are settled. JoAnn
ReplyDeleteI will keep you all and your community in my thoughts-sounds very scary. I love your Mom Squad get togethers. It's harder once the kids graduate as you have to make the time to schedule, rather than "let's meet up after the concert" etc. I'm so sorry for you coworker-Covid is still present in our lives, so this ignorant attitude makes me scream inside.
DeleteLike several other commenters have already said, research low maintenance plants that offer good ground cover, are suitable for your part of the world and just let them get on with it. No weeding necessary.
ReplyDeleteAs a foodie I'm surprised you don't plant a herb bed, low maintenance, pretty and edible! xxx
As for Herb bed-I'd kill it for sure-or give a salad bar to my squirrels. I laugh at you calling me a foodie-I do like to eat. YEs, I need to really research what will work for my lack of interest and now how.
DeleteHello Sam, Usually there is something like a County Agricultural Extension Agent that will examine the conditions in your yard and make recommendations as to which trees will thrive. Also be sure to get locally sourced trees, as these would be the most acclimated. I too like an all-green yard--flowers are nice, but I can always look at other people's!
ReplyDelete--Jim
The son of our neighbors is a budding arborist-if that is a term. I'll pick his brain and likely purchase from his shop.
DeleteI like vegetable gardening for the simple reason there is no comparison between home grown and shop bought veggies. That being said, if I lived in Turin near the market I doubt I'd ever plant another thing!
ReplyDeleteI have decided we are Farmers Market people. I love the freshness, but not enough to push myself to garden. My family would have starved had we been born in a different time period.
DeleteAs a gardener my first emotion is to gasp in disbelief but I know lots of people (the majority?) who do not care for gardening. Maybe it is a recessive gene that effects one to dig in the dirt.
ReplyDeleteMy dad loved it-my mom hated it. I have siblings who are 50-50. There might be some truth to your theory.
DeleteI love gardening as you know from us having the allotments, but our outside spaces at home are very low maintenance as I only grow trees, perennials and shrubs that take care of themselves. We have squirrels , but the only problem they cause is burying acorns and conkers, so I have oaks and horse chestnut trees springing up all over the garden! I haven't passed the gardening gene to my daughters, and only one got the crafting gene.
ReplyDeleteI am truly my mom- none of those genes got to me at all. I hope my kids find hobbies they like that do their homes proud.
DeleteNo shame in not being into gardening. I do not have a single plant in my house, Sam!
ReplyDeleteIronically, my houseplants are thriving. I've got two that are over 6 years- a lifetime for me.
