It's time for no topics Friday, a free for all, where I just let my fingers type where my brain wanders.
Traveling these days is risky business. Several sisters and spouses are supposed to leave February 7. One brother-in-law tested positive last Saturday. They are cutting it close and now my sister is testing daily. My sister works April through October, 7 days a week, 10-12 hour days. Then, in her off season, where she still works a lot, she helps with grandchildren and an unhealthy MIL. I really want her to be able to go, but it's been a gamble since this latest variant emerged. She's resigned to what happens, happens, no complaining at all, but crossing fingers. Lord help her if she gets stuck in her cabin while at sea, though she has a balcony, a massive number of books in her Kindle, and unlimited room and bar service. Another sister left yesterday with a group of friends on an all inclusive Mexico vacation. So far, all healthy I hear. I'm not too worried about my trip later in the month, but I'll be sure every precaution is taken.
How are you feeling inflation? Last week A Dime at a Time said her truck driving husband saw no signs on the road that people were feeling the negative impact of inflation. He saw what seemed to be traveling of all sorts. I of course feel sheltered a bit as driving/ commuting is where I'd likely feel it, and of course that's not happening. This is purely a math estimate based in the federal mileage rate of 56¢ a mile, but I've saved since March 20, 2020, my last day in the office other than the four times since, $15,141 in commuting costs. I even took out vacation weeks, holiday, etc. Funny- that didn't translate to our bank account, but then business was really down for DH much of 2020, and even some really bad months in 2021. Likely it'll show up in my car lasting longer. It's a 2014 with 138,000 miles, 95% put on prior to 2020. I love this car, a Chevy Malibu. It's comfortable, attractive, and gets relatively good gas mileage. It comfortably seats 4 (5 as a tight squeeze) with a huge trunk for luggage or other items needed. I see no reason to replace for a long time. Commuting is tough on cars. If I go back just 1-2 days per week in the office, that's extending it perhaps another 60%. a year of normal wear and tear. Maybe with good care, I'll not need a new car ever. I guess that's a real strategy we all have for inflation; make things last.
Does everything need to be shared? Lately I've found I'm just bored with hearing and reading about other people's nonsense. I'm rarely on Facebook anymore, mostly just to look for birthdays, live streams of my great niece or nephews activities, or to check a calendar. I don't want to read people looking to complain about things they created themselves and have the ability to resolve without the melodrama. Virtual life has gotten this way too. I want to read blogs and see vlogs with ideas and solutions, funny stories, interesting day trips, and clever and cute pets. Give me a recipe, a good haul I can poke fun of or be envious of, a movie or book review, a day in the life, a good chuckle. Is my complaint ridiculous? I just think there's real woes in the world and people complaining about slow service in the McDonald's drive thru, or the BOGO that they drove out of their way for and was out of stock, is hardly the crisis it's made out to be. ( I'm talking to you K). I told you this post is just where my mind is wandering. Of course, we all need space to vent as well, but whining isn't going to change things, and whining about some things just uses letters and words. Call me out on my own malarkey as well. (This is my last vent on other people venting.)
It's almost the weekend. DH took tomorrow off, just because. It's not a vacation day, just finally getting a rotation where his long hours on other days, and the slowness this month doesn't need everyone in the store every Saturday all day. I'm going to try and be productive with house stuff today, as I'm supposed to only be working a few hours this morning. I'm meeting a friend later, but DH and I might actually have plans on a Saturday. I've got book club Sunday night and need to get my book read, so that's entertainment sorted. The book is The Last Night in London by Karen White.
What's going on in your life right now? What do you want to talk about? I promise I'll let you share anything, as long as it's not nonsense. Insert smile emoji.
We've been missing Jet all week. I've questioned myself if we were wrong for putting him through surgery but at the same time I think I would have always wondered if he would have had more time if we didn't. That's the problem with having pets, you're always second guessing yourself. Other than that the week has been OK. We had half a day filled with sleet and then over a full day of snow that dropped 11 inches in our area. We don't get snow often so that was a treat for me. Enjoy your weekend!!
ReplyDeleteI understand-and am so sorry. They are our babies-we want to do everything to keep them healthy and with us. You need to take the time to grieve your beautiful boy. I'm glad the snow gave you a bit of cheer.
DeleteAnother lovely two days of snow, sleet, freezing rain and flooding in western PA. We were spared the worst of it thankfully. I’m taking advantage of heading in to work late and having my husband drive me since he’s heading out to a meeting anyway. My Jeep is frozen solid anyway and his truck isn’t, so it just makes sense. In other news, my daughter committed to a university, the one we knew all along she was going to lol. It’s a little over an hour away, ten minutes away from her boyfriend’s college, a beautiful campus in a small rural town. She’s connected with the head of the business college several times, including and hour long zoom meeting on Monday, as she was interviewing him for her senior project. Nothing else much going on here. Glad January is over! JoAnn
DeleteThe frozen sleet is massively challenging. Dangerous in vehicles and on our feet. That's exciting news that she picked her school!
DeleteIt's been a wild week with a work "emergency". I use the word "emergency" in quotes, because it was something that should have been planned for. It is date driven, so how it snuck up on everyone is a real mystery. Somehow I ended up with the project, due to some shenanigans on the part of my peer, and I'm on the fence of deciding if I want to say anything to him/my manager, or just suck it up & move on. I'm giving myself time to come to that answer, because I'm still really irritated by it, which isn't the time to have that conversation.
ReplyDeleteWe're supposed to be skiing in a few weeks, which I'm hoping will largely be COVID safe-ish. I definitely, under no circumstance, would do a cruise. That's just me, though. Mostly because I'd be so anxious about the possibility of getting stuck on the boat.
Hoping for a relaxing & quiet weekend!
Mentioning disappointments is not annoying to me,because it's sharing news and life. But the other day I read four paragraphs before I stopped, about someone's disruptions in life, hair color, nails done, the show she wanted to watch was interupted with a real crisis. I hope your ski trip happens. We've had late breaking needs at work, but we're all caught of guard so shared the woes.
DeleteSince I'd retired before the pandemic hit, I had already had a significant decrease in my driving and it decreased even more after all of this started. But yes, inflation is a factor in the increasing gas prices and the cost of groceries in particular. I tend to believe that as supplies increase we'll see some costs drop, with inflation following that trend.
ReplyDeleteAs for TMI - again I agree. I tend to scroll past that stuff. I wonder if the issue is a Me versus We. Instead of looking outward and realizing that so much is minor, the attention is on their personal experience. First world problems, and all that.
Enjoy your day!
Now that I've vent d, I've declared myself done. When DH retired, likely he'll drive more. He only works about 2 Miles from home.
DeleteWe are iced in here in PA. Used to being snowed in during the winter but this ice stuff sucks and reminds me of my youth growing up in the South. I am worrying about getting to NJ for my son's wedding later this month but otherwise no other big worries.
ReplyDeleteI am finally getting caught up on some chores here, yay! Plus this weekend I am going to attempt to reenter eBay selling.
Have a good weekend!
Now that is worry! I hope the weather is promising for travel. Ice is no joke.
DeleteI had a 2000 Malibu and loved it. It is the one totaled by a 15 passenger van runnng a light.
ReplyDeleteLol. So, you are complaining about people complaining. Okkkkaaay! I suppose everyone needs to vent.
Ironic, right. But now I'm done. Malibu's have been good cars.
DeleteMy son used to spend an absolute fortune on gas even though he was living in Geneva. Now he's moved out to France (hence much further from work), he's still saving because it's all motorway driving instead of city driving (when he does go in to work), and of course he's working from home most of the time. It's most certainly helped his bank balance. And I do hope your sister gets to go away - that is one grueling work schedule she's got!
ReplyDeleteMy son has mostly slow freeway miles. Things are close but takes a long time to get around due to traffic.
DeleteThank you for that adorable photo, Sam! That's put a big soppy smile on my face.
ReplyDeleteOh I hear you with the social media (and blog) whingers. It's hard to stay patient with people who constantly moan about minor aches & pains, late deliveries and shop staff not being polite, they need to get a life. xxx
He just gets cuter, which is lucky because his mood is crankyer. I seriously want to be held accountable for my contributions to the whine ( as opposed to contributing wine)
DeleteThanks for sharing the adorable photo, he's such a little cutie! I hope everyone's trips all work out and everyone stays healthy too. Feel free to call me out if I ever decide to whine about the little annoyances in life, it doesn't change anything to complain about it anyway. Have a great weekend Sam!
ReplyDeleteI was probably harsh. Venting still has purpose, but proportionality to situation is what I'm talking about.
DeleteA couple of months ago gas prices were $2.76 in college town to $3.25 in work town 2.5 hrs away. Now gas prices are $3.09 in college town and $3.40 in work town. Groceries are out the roof high. I am making chili with beans and some ground beef. Cindy in the South
ReplyDeleteWork town is high but didn't leap quite as much as home. Chili sounds so good.
DeleteI just love you blog, you are so real and just make me think and also laugh and that is important to me. Gas is a big item in our budget, and I hate that it is so high. I love to watch hauls on vlogs and then judge. You and me is sista's
ReplyDeleteWith all the people you care for, I can't imagine how much you're filling your tanks. I'm as crabby about inconveniences as the next person, but whole blog posts, videos, or endless Facebook whining can just go!
DeleteYour blog, your right to vent!
ReplyDeleteI know gas has really gone up, but I am riving so seldom now that it is not really impacting my bottom line.
I have noticed every time I go to the store prices have increased ever so slightly.(Except for beef and that has skyrocketed)
I'll probably notice more if I do a big shop at a single store, but it's just been piddly stuff, and nothing since Sunday.
DeleteSensible woman to be off FB.
ReplyDeleteNothing major around here; I lead a dull life
Good.
I like to say small but important life. I'm just at enjoying morning coffee and tuning out the rest.
