Deciding What to Not Blog About

I updated my post yesterday with a few pictures. In the end, I toned down the Super Bowl menu as energy and appetites waned, so skipped the flat bread, fries, and quesadilla, and still more than enough. Appetizers are filling! I'm glad we had not accepted any one's invite, and that no one was looking for a place to watch the game and came to our house. I needed a quiet afternoon and evening. DH's family had double bad news. We found out on Saturday morning when we were out of town, that both his great aunt and his mom's best friend died earlier that morning, at the exact same time.

My MIL is a snowbird in Arizona, and needed help from someone to arrange flights to get back here. DH texted that I would help, but couldn't do anything until Sunday when we were home and knew her precise plans based on dates and times for services. After a long call, several texts with other family members, all is sorted for her transportation, flowers will be ordered, and my MIL hopefully can be back this week without stress. I had written a very long post about this, mostly a vent about DH's family dynamics, but have decided that writing out my frustration was well enough and I don't need to subject the universe to it by hitting the publish budget.

This little blog is cathartic for me and gives me an outlet not just for my brain, but also for my soul at times. Often what I write is a mind dump as if I was talking with a girlfriend over a good cup of coffee or glass of wine. Thank you for all of that. However, not every subject I need to vent about would neither be fair to others involved in my drama, as it is my view only, but also irrelevant and uninteresting to readers. While of course the hobby bloggist has full editorial and content licenses to write anything on their blog, I sometimes scratch my head after reading a post, and think, "why did I just read that?"

My theme for lack of descriptor, is sharing my experience around money, time, and home/kitchen management, and how these overlap with my day to day life and long term goals. Even with a very broad spectrum, I veer off course, often with little tales of my kids, a loosely related anecdote in an effort to support my point, or a  consumer experience. Sometimes I'll want to write in response to current events, how they are impacting me and occupying my thoughts. Hopefully those side trips make the blog more personal, and real because the stories illustrate what's going on that makes money, time, and kitchen management difficult and absolutely essential. The post I wrote, but am choosing to not publish, is pure and simple steam blowing, with no substantive value to you all. I hope you all hold me accountable, politely please, if I go blog rogue in the future.

  1. We have very similar perspectives on blog content. I'm sure many people are bored by my laundry list of tasks to accomplish, but it holds me accountable. Similarly, I love that peek into the lives of others, so I enjoy reading that type of content. I've tried really hard lately to keep my frustration out of my blogging, because I know how it feels to read the reverse perspective, and it's a little . . . in your face. We all have common ground on saving money and time management, so try to anchor my blogging there. Not always successful. ;-)

    1. Sometimes just writing out a post and keeping in drafts is enough for me. Other times I want to socialize about it and get it out there. I like your lists!

  2. My theory is "your blog/your choice". I enjoy reading the lists as well as the bits and pieces each blogger I read shares about his or her life/thoughts/ happenings. I figure if someone doesn't care for a particular post I write they can and will just click off of it and more to something more to their liking, but it will not impact what I write, say or think.
I don't think this forum of social media is about trying to please every single reader, but is about allowing whoever reads into the writers world.

    1. So true, though ones I choose not to publish, I didn't enjoy reading either. Some posts will be more popular or ring a time and some will fall flat.

  4. I never mind what people write about. If something does not interest me, I move on. I can never understand the commenters who criticize the blogger. Just go away if you don't like what is happening. Questioning the blogger to gain greater understanding is entirely different. I like hearing about the personal and often get a laugh.

    1. this one was whiny though, blah blah blah, mother in law, blah blah blah, sister in law. After writing it out, I also decided I made too big of a deal about it in my head. that's where filtering comes in handy before hitting publish.

  5. Your blog, your rules :) I've done that a few times - written a rant and then didn't publish it, in fact I did one recently, and yes it was very therapeutic but TMI!! I think what's great about blogging is, for me anyways, is having a nice big support system who I know isn't going to go blab about me or pass judgment on me to mutual friends. There is trust, humour, support and a wide variety of knowledge. Whenever I ask a question I get so much good advice and I really appreciate that. Ummm...did I get off topic?

    1. You are right-good support system here. As I just typed to Linda above, I read this particular post and realized how whiny I was, really over, minor stuff. I've been whiny this winter-need a heavy dose of spring.

  6. Yours is one of the most real blogs I read and that's why I love it so much.

    1. A little too real, so that is why I need to sometimes pause before clicking!
