Dipping My Toes in the Job Market Waters

I had an unexpected phone message and e-mail on Friday afternoon. Apparently a local executive search firm is doing a scout for a position in early childhood and my name was referred by  several people as a potential fit for the job. He called again while I was at the show choir day, on chance that it would be easier to talk on a non-work day. He had attached the position description and we also talked more. I am quite intrigued. The position has a lot of new project and creative opportunities embedded. It involves some state, national, and even international travel, but infrequent so potentially in a range I would be good with. Next step is for me to pull an updated resume and cover letter together and send it forward. He presents a final slate of candidates to his client, and interviews will start at months end.

I actually applied for a position in mid January for which I thought I was a perfect fit. I didn't even get an interview. A good friend of mine is in a similar position, very strong resume and proven skill set, but repeatedly gets denied for jobs without even an interview. We both wonder if it doesn't have to do with having too much experience, code for age. Also, disinterest as the prospective employer assumes salary requirements would  be too high, and they could bring someone in for 20-30% less, and groom them rather than have someone be able to hit the ground running, perhaps? Interestingly, 15 years ago when I was just a few years into my first upper management positon, I interviewed for several positions, even had two job offers, for positions that I didn't think I was actually that qualified for, and certainly didn't have the experience I have now. One offer required a relocation, not doable with the ages of my kids at the time. The other offer I was set to accept, but my then boss countered with an increase in salary and more paid time off; too good to start over.

This opportunity may go no where or could be worth a good look. Either way, I can't deny it was nice to know my reputation in my field is still stellar. I'll keep you posted if any changes are pending. Is it vane to pat myself on the back abut this? Has anyone else received a professional adrenaline boost lately?

  1. Of course it's not vain! You don't get a good reputation by sitting back on your heels...you've got it because you've earnt it!

    1. I will say I do work hard, but what's the saying, "so does a washing machine." LOL. I have to think clearly about my cover letter-how to pull out the fact that I've earned them taking a look at me for the position.

  2. Oh that sounds exciting - definitely apply for it. I think sometimes jobs are filled before they are even listed, companies are mandated to post them but already have a specific candidate in mind. I too have applied for positions that I would have been perfect for and not heard a thing, even in my 30s

    1. I think that had to be the case with that last position. I think I'll go for it. Nothing to lose.

  3. Congratulations - it sounds like a really interesting offer. How do you feel about the travel element? Jx

    1. I don't want to put any eggs in any baskets, or horses before any carts, but since the posting said occasional travel, I am ok with that. I used to travel about 6-8 times a year, which was frequents enough to get out of the office and some new surroundings, but not so much that home life was disrupted. Plus, with DD2 driving now, we have more flexibility.

    1. Thank you. Best time to pursue a new job is when you already have one, right?
