Menu Thoughts

I have not done much meal thought until yesterday when I finally got to the grocery store. We  ate canned soup once we all home Sunday night, which worked just fine after the rich food on the weekend. Monday was a banquet for DD2 and National Honor Society induction, and Tuesday I made wild rice soup packet, doctored up with more carrots, onion, and celery along with the last of the meat and cheese bought for Easter. Yesterday I felt overwhelmed in the grocery so just stuck to fruit, veg, dairy, bread, and then sourced out a week of meals with what knew we had on hand at home. Not the most thrifty way to shop, but it was less overwhelming to me.By the time we all were home, we ate a simple dinner of chili dogs, tator tots, and salad.

Hopefully this assortment will get us through until next Thursday when I know DH might be itching for a rogue grocery shop.  We've spent $140 total on groceries for April, eating down my overly abundant Easter shop has helped quite  bit.  Despite being sick of wintry weather, the cold makes simple and thrifty meals like soup, stews, and hot dishes pretty satisfying. We'll have a night of leftovers and I'll probably make a big pot of soup too as I have both a ha bone and beans that were soaked, but not yet cooked, in the freezer. I have another take and bake pizza coupon, so may tap into that on a hectic night. Here's where my mind went yesterday.

Hamburgers, sweet potato wedges, coleslaw
Salisbury steak, rice, and carrots
Penne pasta, sauce, and meatballs with salad and garlic toast
Chicken drumsticks, mashed potatoes, green beans
Chicken and rice hotdish with carrots, celery, and onions
Vegetable curry with rice and naan bread
Tuna hotdish and green beans
Bean burritos, with rice and avocados

I stocked up on breakfast items like more yogurt and bagels, cream cheese and orange juice plus more deli meat for lunches. Grab and go in the morning so I'm not tempted to order Foodsby or run to the Target deli counter has been working well for a while now. I manage to throw something together and save my time and money. Does nayone else plan mals while in the grocery store? While I usually try and have a list, sometimes just winging it works better for me.

  1. My menus are a combination of using what I have on hand and what is a deal at the grocery store this week. The ratio of what-to-what varies every week. Throw in a rogue meal I want to try a new recipe out or I just get a hankering for X and that's the plan.
I generally study the sales ad before going to the store and have a loose list of what I want to buy but then deals I don't notice or weren't in the ad appear so I change the plan on the fly.
It helps to be about to think on your feet and adjust while in the store. This is why I NEVER send Hubs to the grocery store unless it's an emergency situation. lol Though it slows me way down I have been having him come to the store WITH me a bit so I can teach him how I do this. He is either a slow learner or just not into it however.....lolz

  2. Winging it does NOT work well for me, as far as meal planning at the grocery store. Sadly that's how I roll a lot of the time but I do so much better with money management when I have a set plan before hand.

This cold spring is awful, but like you mentioned we've been doing a lot of soups and stews here. They for sure have been satisfying with all this cold dreary weather.

  3. I couldn't follow a strict meal plan even when we were five at home, but I always defrosted something the night before so I knew vaguely what we were having. Now of course I can wing it - I quite like it sometimes! Anna

  4. As you know I just can't/won't follow a menu, but I plan daily based on what I bought from the store sales. (They hate to see me coming because I am a huge cherry picker)
I have been having some wonderful food budget successes. TheHub has had a ton of work related dinners lately (they come in bunches quarterly) so it has cut into his recreational shopping time. There is a silver lining to everything!

    1. My family gets in these days where they say they are tired of things, and then I have to alter my game plan. I would be ecstatic if hubs ate more meals out for work-we'd have girls dinner every night, whihc is basically just eating what we fell like, plus a piece of fruit to round it out.
