Thrifty Thursday- Big Wins

I hinted on Tuesday that we had some garage sale success. My daughter has a vision of a porch as part of her future home, complete with a rocking chair to sit and enjoy her morning coffee. We saw one at sale # 1 for $20, but it wasn't quite a style she liked. Then, this was found at sale two. The price? A mere $5 for almost exactly what she pictured. It's a little scuffed, but she plans to give it a good clean and paint white. She's going to leave the cane seat and back unpainted.

DH was impressed to the point of being obnoxious about her flipping it for $100 or more. No, it's her chair. It will be lovely in a future home. As it's sitting on my porch, I've sat on it and can vouch for it's comfort. We'll both keep our eyes out for additional pieces. Shout out to Scarlet at The Finished Article for ideas and inspiration. I love helping my daughter. Now, if only I could sew and help her make cushions and throw pillows, table runners, or curtains.

This wasn't the only big thrifty win, at least to us, this past week.

  • Free entertainment Thursday night, enjoying the music on the river. I did put a donation in the can, but we brought our own beverages and home popped corn for munching
  •  DH did a wheely dealy on his car, making money off it, and extending the life of our fleet. I can't really explain this, but trust that he knows his stuff and would make sure it was a positive financial move
  • Filled my tank with a 21¢ discount bringing gas to $3.47. I was going to say just, but decided not to as it still was $46 to fill the tank.
  • Funny, technically he was his own car customer and got a perk in the mail of choclate chips cookies and another large coffee travel mug, the high quality heavily insulated kind. That takes care of a sweet treat for him for the rest of the week and we'll use the mug for home made and taken with us coffee and hot chocolate in outings.
  • Used last year's blueberries, leftover Certo pectin, previously purchased kids, and old jars to make jam. No new costs. Incidentally, the farmer's market had a stand that sold jam in 12 ounce jars for $4. The berries were expensive so honestly, I might not have savings but personal satisfaction is priceless.
  • DD2 was the beneficiary of a free concert ticket after her friend's mom won a pair through a radio station call in contest. These were not cheap seats (  parking was attrocious in downtown Minneapolis though) and she enjoyed it as her first what she called, real concert not with family
  • Zucchini, summer squash, and green beans were farmers market buys, yummy, supporting local, and lots of food for $4.50
  • We packed a lunch for a day at the lake
  • Dinner out Saturday night wasn't frugal, but we used leftovers for part of Sunday supper and lunch on Monday, so made good use of all food ordered. I even used the leftover dipping sauce for a meatball sandwich on Tuesday for my lunch

Its so fun to score a few wins. I'm excited to share the upcycled chair once done. No doubt we'll go out and about again and see what other treasures might be found. She'd like a book case, and I could use another one for my office too. How about you? Any wins this week?

  1. What a huge score on that chair! It's lovely & can't wait to see the upcycled version.

We've been doing the basics - eating garden goodies, charging our car at work, I took a free workout class & ate lunch for free at work 2x. Sold a couple of things on eBay.

    1. I think it will be very cute once done and will fit her asthetic she's planning. We've avoided take out and restaurants since Saturday. We'll, DH took his mom along to the lake to take care of an issue and took her out for breakfast brunch, but I don't count that.

  4. Great find on the chair. It'll look lovely painted that way. I'm looking for a small bookcase and work table, so far no luck. No rush tho. Good luck with the bookcase hunt.

    1. No rush here. I found something in Facebook marketplace but the seller didn't return message so must have sold.

  6. Pretty chair. Lucky her. If you paint the chair, the chair behind the weave will remain white and not look so great. She could paint the weave, too. Or replace the weave. It is easy and comes in sheets to replace. She can read about it on Youtube.
    Wins--good grocery ads this week.

    1. I meant to say that the chair behind the weave will still be dark when she paints the chair white.

    2. There's no wood behind the weave except where it merges. We've watched a couple videos so think it will be pretty. She can always decide to paint the cane if she doesn't like it two shades.

  7. I love the chair and can’t wait to see it finished. It just looks like a solid, comfy seat. Small wins this week. Had a free coupon for a Bath and Body Works item, which will be accompanying my daughter to school. Popped into Marshall’s and found a backpack that she loves $20 cheaper than the one we had previously bought. Already returned the other one, so that brings my Kohl’s charge down to $0. Finally found the lighted makeup mirror she wanted. They had two style boxes but virtually same item inside, one was $5 cheaper so of course we got that one! Free sample of Emergen-C at Sam’s club. Got gas for $4.14. Snagged DD a nice Gym Shark outfit from Plato’s Closet for $7, since I had a $10 off coupon for my birthday. Gym Shark is soooo pricey for no reason so this was an amazing find. Her dorm is right near the rec center so I’m trying to encourage her to take full advantage of it since we’re paying for it anyway. JoAnn

    1. Definitely. It will be her first true upcycled project. She has an end table she's held into as is, but wants to do something with it as well.
