First, thanks for the "we get you comments" on yesterday's post. Overall I'm in a good and positive state of mind, but the words yesterday just flowed out. I must have needed the catharsis. Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area where I sort of live, got the winter wrath over night with icy rain. My daughter smartly planned to stay here, avoiding likely a not yet sanded rural road. It was like a little sleep over mid week. It reminded me of a January birthday party as a child, mid week, when an unexpected blizzard and cold front came and we all stayed over at my friend's, and that stretched to all day until dad's on tractors with plows picked up kids and brought them home.
That little detour down memory lane aside, last night was a good night for she and I to dive into my kitchen and make comfort food. It stayed above freezing until over night, so this was done after puppy class, so a much later dinner than we're used to on a weeknight. We were famished but had a huge sheet pan of roasted veggies, cous cous, and I made sausage gravy and biscuits for DH and me. She had the last Dr Praeger veggie burger.
The veggies off set the rich gravy and carb loaded biscuits. I didn't care about calories at this point. For next few days, we've got leftovers from last night, Mondays crockpot mock lasagna that barely was touched, plus makings for Italian bread pizza. There's both sauce left, and a large loaf to use up. That's good, as I already feel like I'll want to just crawl up under the covers after work tonight and not think about preparing a meal. The wet cold reaches into my bones. It's sweater weather to be sure.
Isn't it funny how sometimes just letting what's on your mind out makes us feel a bit better? It's been warmer than average here but that is all supposed to change Friday.
ReplyDeleteIt felt good to just admit, I'm feeling like Christmas crap this year! But, then to list the good things was better. Its warmish for December but so wet, but getting cold next week. We need roads to dry so they don't ice up.
DeleteIt was 35 yesterday here (cold for us), and the heat was broken in our office. It was really unpleasant, and I was cold until I went to bed. I felt like I couldn't get warm, even when I got home!
ReplyDelete35 and no heat is cold! That's when typing in a keyboard is painful. I hope you got relief.
DeleteMy wet cold is mid 50s, but it still chills me to the bone. That is quite a storm story. I hope the tractors had cabs.
ReplyDeleteIn 1978 my dad had no cans for his trusty old tractor. Me and a friend each road the wheel cap home. When the damp get to the bones it's not pleasant.
DeleteI chuckled to myself a bit at your post from yesterday. I could have written it myself. Yesterday was a dark, gray day, with D.H. asleep more than awake which scared me. (Prior to his stroke, it wouldn't have.) We both tend towards SAD. Being from the northeast, the PNW would have felt like a tropical paradise in comparison, but we had 10 years in the southwest to spoil us as car as winter weather. (The weather was about the only thing I liked there, though.) Today is clear and bright, though, so things are looking up for today. It's the quintessential Christmas season weather for this region. Here's to a great, restful, peaceful and rewarding rest of the week, with good cheer aplenty for the weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt felt good to get it out, but better to get validation that I'm not unusual and my feelings are ok. I just don't know where we'd live that would work better. I think we need to just be able to get away from it all when too much.
DeleteI can just imagine being a kid and getting to sleepover - and then having dad show up on a tractor to pick you up! For a kid I'm betting life doesn't get much better than that!
ReplyDeleteI still remember clear as shine 47 years later. It was pretty cool. School of course cancelled was even better.
DeleteLots of yummy food, warm house, loving family, how lucky you are!!! Megan
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Megan. I am fortunate.
DeleteMinus 5 here today (that's 23 F to you, I think) and set to drop to minus 10 later...arghh! We had salad and Lebanese flatbread for tea and will go for our second swim of the week in the morning despite the vile temperatures! Roll on Spring! xxx
ReplyDeletesweaters - and heavy wooly socks.
ReplyDeleteThey've both become my uniform.
DeleteYikes, I hope the weather gets better! Daughter lives near St Cloud and we have to drive through your way to get to hers. Not sure why she moved somewhere colder than Michigan lol. She does get sunshine though. I'm glad to have found your blog!
ReplyDeleteWe do get some glorious sun filled winter days. If it's not below freezing windchills, I can handle bundling up ok for sunny walk. We have to pass past St Cloud on route to daughter's college. It's been odd no treck this fall with her studying away. I guess we'll be there for graduation.
