Thrifty Thursday-Houseful Edition

Not every week is banner in money savings, this week prices it  But a good life is balancing not wasting limited assets. This is a short list of thrift for the week. I'm tracking how I use time, resources, and money. With five people in the house, as DD1 spent most of the stay here too, there was extra use of all three.

Time

  • Travel has not been for the weary. Used free text alerts yesterday for sons flight, saving us and him wasted airport time. It meant we could have a good lunch together too.
  • DD2, the eternal procrastinator, did a good job getting transitioned from four months abroad, to narrowing what she'd need for the semester. It all fit in her little car.

Resources

  • We all really used the food prepared.
  •  Froze two large portions of turkey breast, enough for two meals for DH and me. Froze the bones and skin, miscellaneous bits to make soup broth.
  • Found a new recipe from Belinda that was so economical and was a winner taste wise made entirely from pantry and freezer items, her baked rice and beans. I used frozen black beans I had cooked from dry.

Money

  • Looked up new procedure to get my health pretax funds back. It's complicated with our new system but it's my money to get back.
  • Loaded receipts in Fetch. There's a bit of a bonus game where once a day you spin a virtual wheel for extra points. I've had just tiny top offs of 10-25 points, but maybe I'll get lucky with a big spin.
  • Played MS Rewards for points towards gift certificates
  • We got a problem solved regarding DD2's tuition and scholarships saving $6500! ( I knew it would be resolved, but wanted something big to call a win).
I've said the past week was not about being thrifty. There were many meals out, splurged grocery items, and movie tickets (DH and kids saw Avatar) with inflated concession popcorn, airport runs and parking. I don't care about that for this week because I had my family together.

  1. That's a huge win, with the scholarship! I too have been uploading receipts to Fetch & you've inspired me to get back to MS Rewards again.

I want to try Belinda's recipe - it sounds great!

    1. I hope I don't worry about money in general, but am mindful most of the time. Deviating From a normal thrifty mindset occasionally won't derail our plans.

    1. It's always there for big things, but yes, I don't need to stress about extra meals out and expenses when it's so rare we're all here together.

    1. Day to day, just let yourself breath. You have no shoulds, and people you've always been there for will be there for you now. I'm sure you are filled with casseroles and desserts from people.

  8. I went to MS Rewards and there were many sites, so rather than take a chance on giving all my info to the wrong site, I held off. Then, when I got the McAfee installed that I paid for, I figured I would try again. Can you supply a link to the proper site? Thanks.
It sounds like your week, time, and money, and energy were well-spent.

  9. Yes, family together seems to make all other things not important.
