Wanna Be-Scandanavian Homes

Clean, but not sterile. Bright, but not glittery. I love the look of Scandinavian homes. One would think with all my Norwegian and Danish blood, a little of the design standards might have made their way to me, but alas, I swim in  a shabby chic, heavy on the shabby, mixed with unoriginal store showroom designed living spaces. I drool over this blog, My Scandinavian Home. Granted, for me, some of the pictures of homes and rooms that are featured move into the sterile category for me, but I long for the rooms with bright walls, simple furnishing, and not a stack of jumbled papers or clothes anywhere. I admit to keeping the Ikea catalogue as a coffee table book to help draw a little inspiration.

DD2's room is the closest to where I have embraced it, with her white furniture, and pops of color on her bedding. However, still too much stuff and mess (Christmas gift bag still on her desk), and her green and blue walls, her choice, scream American teen.
Little touches-her pillow from London, peace blanket made by her sis, Rags, her puppy  from childhood, and more books than a typical teen, with many more still boxed up, that she is deciding whether or not to keep.

My little office nook, mostly because I can close the cabinet/desk doors on the paperwork clutter, is the simple look I would like to have in the whole house. All the closets in my home are larger than closets from modest homes built before 1984, and from what I can tell from some British home shows, most UK and European homes. Still, I struggle with finding enough storage space. I know this is a stuff problem, more than a design problem, but would like to tackle both.

I'm off to take a look at a couple Thrift stores today to see what I might be able to create or re-purpose into a television stand. I think heavy dose of white or Scandinavian inspired colored  paint and sand paper might get me the look I want for cheap. Who else is a Scandinavian design fan? Who has ideas of how, with spending little to no money, I can get some of the look and feel of these spaces?

    1. It is not for everyone, and even for me, it is the clutter free, brightness I like, perhaps not all the specific styles.

  2. I love your daughter's colorful bedroom. It's very cheerful. I am trying to get more color into my own home a little at a time so as to not overwhelm my husband. He's liking it so far which is good. I do love things simple and uncluttered. It makes taking care of my home so much easier.

  3. I am also a massive fan of that blog. I am a fan of Scandi style, I ours is a modernist house so it lends itself to that kind of look, there's lots of light and lots of space, even though the house itself isn't that big, it just uses the space very well with lots of built in storage and things like that.

    1. We have a very cottage style house, pretty common late 80's style US house, so I can really adapt to any style, though the amount of oak I have tends to absorb more country style. It is the clean lines, and sparseness, yet hominess I appreciate.

  4. Cool blog. Good luck at the thrift store. In December I helped Mom repurpose one of her very large heavy carved night stands (believe they were end tables originally but about 10 years ago we found them in a consignment shop - beautiful hand carved angels on the front, think they are Spanish antiques, I bought them for her because I wanted them but we weren't living on the Island at the time) into a TV stand as she finally got rid of her tube TV and got an upgraded model that needed a flatter surface. If you don't find the exact piece consider painting it?

    1. I definitely am open to paining-either white with some rusticated sanding, or maybe a dark brown or even black. A standard dresser is the right width, but too tall, so wonder if i could creatively have it cut down? for the right price, I might be open to trying.

  5. I appreciate the style but it is not mine. I have some odd little things in my home that amuse me on a daily basis. They really would not work with the Scandinavian minimalist look.

    1. Me as well, but the clean lines and lack of chaos look so lovely to me.

  6. I love the style and drool over the IKEA catalog when it comes in! Though for me, it's mostly just window shopping. There is NO WAY I could pull off that much a clean and organized look! LOL

    1. I say it is like Pinterest for me-inspiration, but still create what works in real life.

  7. I've just had a peek at that blog. I'm sorry but I wouldn't hang those mobiles in my home if they were given to me maybe in the garden lol. All the walls in my house are white but I have pops of colour with curtains rugs and pictures I don't think I'm a Scandi fan at all just not cosy enough for me.

    1. It's the clutter free discipline and calm I like. I'd never pull it off nor would I want to completely but the idea of just the right things, no more, sounds soothing to my mind.
