Freezer Inventory: Use it Up

We really only did one major shop for August, back on  the 12th when I spent close to $200 at Aldi. Before and since has been a series of overspending on the fly or topping off with just what we need when we need it. Regardless, for  Household and Groceries (H&G), and Take Out, we will be near $700 for August, with just three of us at home. While I was pretty clueless yesterday morning about meal planning besides knowing  we needed to make sure to not let fresh fruit and vegetables go bad, I figured I should at least know what is in the freezer for which to plan. I also found other items in the freezer or refrigerator to plan around. Here's what I found:

Meat
1 Pound Turkey Bacon
1 Pound hamburger
1 Pound Sloppy Joe meat
2 , 1 pound packs of Taco meat
1 small pork loin
1, 2 pound  package of boneless chicken tenderloins
1 pound ground turkey
1 pound roll of sausage

Other
Last of the  mega mozzarella bag, probably 8 -10 ounces
1 eight ounce package provolone cheese
1 8 oz brick cheddar cheese
1 two portion size spinach and ricotta ravioli
Two Turkey  cheddar brats
Multiple bags of  mixed frozen vegetables
Large amount left of a large bag of frozen cauliflower
Frozen strawberry filled bread dough
Assorted frozen fruit, strawberries, rhubarb, blueberries, and a tropical blend bought for smoothies.
2 Dozen eggs
1 8 oz. packaged deli Turkey for DH's lunch
4 Egg rolls
Open jar of Bruschetta topping and a little olive tapenade

Last night  I made one last Tika Masala and rice for my daughter and I, using up  some of the frozen vegetables, and a part of a head of broccoli and a zucchini that needed using up. I sliced up the last steak (my daughter and I had shared one) and a pork chop with some friend onions, topped with provolone, and served on some French rolls for DH, kind of like a  Philly Cheese steak sandwich. I was glad I improvised instead of getting take out since we'll get a take out lunch today. Obviously, at least to me, I will not be cooking much for supper when we pull in the driveway tonight, but we can cobble together something and supplement with a grilled cheese if needed. My plan is to get to September buying little more than fruit and fresh vegetables, as I should have more than enough bread for the rest of the month. We'll need something easy for Sunday to bring to the lake, perhaps save the pork loin and save a couple of the brat buns I bought to make garlic bread, along with  salad of some sort and fruit.

I think I have a soft apple aso might try the sausage, apple, and cheddar meatballs again. I can au gratin some of the vegetables and make with ground turkey meatloaf and DH loves the leftovers as sandwiches. I can use veggies and chicken in a stir fry, and have egg rolls on the side. I can make a rice crust  egg quiche with purposely planned leftover rice, eggs, cheese, and another handful of vegetables. I can make a garlic and parmesan sauce with the tapenade, bruschetta topping a little olive oil for the  ravioli and have 3-4 suppers that break me out of our recent rut, and may yield leftovers to skip a night or two of cooking completely and still give me some lunch leftovers. I feel like know what is available will make the monotonous, yet daunting task of meal planning a bit  less frustrating. Importantly I am more confident that I am done with the bulk of grocery spending for the month.

  1. You have inspired me to go through all of my bits and pieces to see what I can cob together for meals this week. Maybe I need one more week of using what I have before resuming keto. (My waist and hips might disagree though)

    1. I need to manage portion control and I think cooking once, eating twice and storing away the leftovers right away should help.

  2. Our grocery bills have been higher than usual because we've been doing grocery pick up and Amazon delivery. Once we start to go back into the grocery stores hopefully that will go down.

    1. I have not found the stores running good deals, but then I am not doing a lot of preplanning or coupon cutting either. I need to do a monthly Aldi and then really rein in the extra stops that add up.

  3. Taking stock of what's on hand is so important. I commit to using up what's in the freezer periodically before restocking it. It took 6 months to get to the bottom of the freezer stores. I call it shopping at home.

    1. I don't even use the garage refrigerator and freezer much but m main one seems to get full and needs working down.Six months is long time for a stock pile to last. Good for you.

  4. I am afraid that I have allowed all of the Covid worrywarts in my head and based on all of the conjecture that it will be ever more fierce this fall and winter, I have become more concerned on stocking up various items. I shop for delivery from Aldi for several different reasons but only order twice a month. I have purchased canned items and baking items via Target, Walmart and rarely, Amazon. Now, I have no clue what I have as I have a limited storage area. As a result, I have a few totes with lids on order and have emptied some of the places I have needed to use for storage, to see what I already had (I did have a fairly good idea - as least in the beginning) and have loaded up boxes and my dining room table and a few other areas so that I can take inventory - pack like items with like items and rotate our stock. A bedroom closet (think 1940's house) has been partially converted to pantry. I put chips and similar soft items in reused plastic Aldi bags and hang from hooks. I'm getting there and in the long run, regardless of Covid, it will all be used and I have stopped "stocking" and once I get it somewhat organized and will rest easy, leaving grocery shopping to include perishables such as milk, fruit and veg. We are lucky enough to also have available a local farm that provides beef, pork, chicken and eggs and they also deliver. This was something I always longed for when we used to live in the north part of the metro. Small town living still feels better for us, overall. Ranee (MN)

    1. There are a few things I still want to add to my back-up if I can find-powdered milk and dry chick peas. I haven't found either in the stores, and I feel like with those two basics on hand, if I get stuck for a while, with just replacing my current pantry, I'd easily be able to last well over a month. I think there will be "stuff" to buy just might be different things than I intended, so having spares is my goal. I too would have access to local farms if needed and would gladly support them directly.

    2. I don't know how you feel about Walmart - but they do have both dry milk and dry chickpeas available for delivery and possibly pickup. They have a minimum dollar amount for free delivery. I'm not sure that the prices are all that great, but sometimes the peace of mind is worth a few extra dollars. Ranee

  5. Good plan. I'm overdue for a freezer inventory to use some things up. I think I'll do that before menu planning for next week. Have a great week :)

    1. I really have no need for anything the rest of the month-nothing and will need to remind us both that daily.

    1. I had forgotten all about the turkey bacon and the ravioli. I think I could make an ice special meal with those items.
