Better than how my body adjusts to the spring hour jump forward, but I'll still have a bit of a time wobble for a week or so as I adjust to the hour added to this week, in effect yesterday. I like to change all the clocks before I go to bed so they are correct the next morning. I realized this morning I didn't do the bedroom clock radio. I also haven't done my car, since I haven't been in it since Saturday. If I remember right, my husband never did change his clock last spring, so at least he is now time right. I will change it though today at some point as tomorrow I will be up bright and early and in the line to vote as soon as the workers are ready. I have two friends that will be poll workers, both of whom have been quarantining themselves to ensure they were not a risk to others. This meant they stayed out of the same rooms as their families in the house, shutting away from their immediate family as well-that's dedication to civil service!
I think about K and C and their willingness to keep themselves safe from potentially catching the virus so they can keep hundreds of neighbors and members of their community safe and able to vote. How much more American patriotism, short of serving in the military, can a person show? In stark contrast, there's still Facebook zealots and bloggers US and internationally spewing conspiracy crap about mask control, and posting links to supposed medical experts, who have been debunked or flaws in their positions pointed out repeatedly, to pander to their views. There's prods to poll watch by the president, and caravans of trucks and cars threatening campaign workers for Biden, and getting applauded on social media and unmasked cult rallies. And again, there's poll workers quarantining to ensure our right to vote on election day.
I think we all can agree no one wants to be wearing masks. No one wants to be having hard conversations about holiday gatherings. We all would like to travel freely. I wish those that had planned big weddings could celebrate with their nearest and dearest friends and family this year. I hate that funerals have to have limited numbers, limiting in person support to those grieving. I'm dreading reading how over the next few weeks case rates per test and hospitalization rates will rise due to Halloween gatherings with little to no mitigations. Each positive case the one that through webs of connection may be the exponential transmission that hits someone in my family that will get deathly ill.
I have to focus on things that will help my personal stress and anxiety. One start is to my blog reading list. I can't read, even if an off handed comment, any more disregard for public health at the so called expense of having their poor freedoms taken away. I took off some pages I followed on Facebook, and unfollowed another bunch of people, not blocked, or unfriended as some are family. At some point I may need to message or exchange information, which is still a good use of social media platforms in an age with no more telephone books, and changing emails. I need to do this for myself and my frustration level. Other than stating this here, in my own blog, I just stopped following and am moving on quietly. I think it is irresponsible, even if their right to state their views even when wrong. Blogs I used to read because they were quirky ways to save money, have turned into conspiracy rants about the "they." I can't even get started on the xenophobic implicit and explicit statements that have started coming through. As wise people who have read and commented on my blog before have said, just scroll on through. That and removing from my inbox and blogroll is a good start. That's how I am sprucing up this Monday.
This is such a hard time, and positions have gotten further & further ingrained. I've done a solid job over the past few weeks of giving up any reading any mention of politics on social media, the news, etc. I can't wait for the election to be over. I also know there are people who can't be in our lives anymore. And, not because of their politics - but because of the horrible things they've said about other people.
ReplyDeleteYour friends working the polls are awesome! A huge thanks to them, as they keep the safety & freedom of our voting system in place, particularly during a pandemic! Do you not have the option to vote by mail?
They're awesome-I agree. We can vote early and by mail, but work schedule and some other changes, I had decided to vote on November 3rd myself in person. We also just had a decision, different than what was promoted, that only votes that arrived by November 3rd, even if postmarked November 3 would not be counted, so more people will probably now vote in person to ensure their vote is counted. In hindsight, I probably should have voted early to take some pressure off poll workers-kind of dumb now tha tI think.
DeleteIt has always been the postmark of mailed in ballots which determined their legitimacy but it seems that the rules are changing to suit our president who actively gutted the U.S. Postal Service. We NEVER have a winner on election night--we have projections and concessions...that's how the system works. But, many of these conspiracists probably don't even know the difference between state and U.S. senate, so I may as well talk to my table.
ReplyDeleteIn any case, I put my ballot in a drop box--WA has had mail-in voting for years.
I have cleaned up my "friend" group. If you don't believe that each and every human has the same fundamental rights as another, are willfully ignorant, and dismiss science to the point you believe the world is a mere 6,000 years old, then sorry, not sorry, I can't waste my precious time.
"If you don't believe that each and every human has the same fundamental rights as another, are willfully ignorant, and dismiss science to the point you believe the world is a mere 6,000 years old, then sorry, not sorry, I can't waste my precious time." Let me just say, Here Here!
DeleteI wish you had a blog Meg! I love to see your comments on the blogs that don't think this way, they always get rattled up. I have immediate family in the US and I worry for them, especially as they are black/mixed. I am not sure why folks are so blinded by hate and ignorance. Even some of my aunts refuse to see the truth, it is pretty disheartening. Hear, hear to your comment too!
DeleteSo it is Hear! Hear! Not Here Here? I wasn't sure! I was trying to process which made more sense and ended on here-meaning Me too! I'd be curious to read these other blogs where Meg comments, but then, that would counter what I just purged.
DeleteI simply don't have the technical savvy to start a blog. Other than reading and commenting on all your wonderful blogs, I simply don't enjoy being on the computer. I don't even have a cell phone.
Deleteyou know i cannot tell if it is here here or hear hear but it is the thought that counts! Meg, I will continue to enjoy your comments! :) The blogs she does comment on sometimes lean political, and it gets sad because otherwise i love the non political content :/
DeleteYour friends working the polls are amazing. A big thank you to them! I sure hope they will stay safe while doing it. I totally agree with you on the blog reading list. I had never unfollowed a blog in my history of blogging but I certainly have unfollowed quite a few in the past few months. I just can't deal with it!
ReplyDeleteThey are doing their part. IT's a good thing I didn't volunteer as I am being pulled into another major action on behalf of the public good.
DeleteI'll say anybody who works the polls is a hero.
ReplyDeleteThe township next to ours where 6K people reside couldn't scare up a SINGLE PERSON to work their polling place for their 4th district(and the one who volunteered renigg-ed on her promise to work and didn't even have the good taste to let anyone know nor did she return ANY of the phone calls from frantic election board folks-Now that's class, isn't it?) Not only are people not civil or polite anymore but they have no civic pride or sense of responsibility. Most people just expect someone else(responsible adults unlike themselves)to pick up the slack.
I just can't help feeling our country is doomed no matter.
Well I am happy in my community, It sounds like they actually had to turn a few people away as back-ups only. I think that is what has happened the last four years-less care about anyone beyond a persons own nose-until they need something and then they are the first to bitch that a resource is understaffed, or they didn't get theirs.
DeleteI hate to keep wishing my life away but I would love to hit fast forward and get to the end of this movie! I voted by mail last week and my vote was received two days later. All political ads get promptly tossed. I’m not on Facebook but am on Twitter and while everything has a political tone to it these days, I find that I follow mostly like-minded, logical and factual accounts. Any strays get muted or unfollowed. I was offered a shift at a sister store in the next county over i.e. closer to downtown on Wednesday but I refused it out of an abundance of caution. I prefer to be closer to home that day and that plaza has already been shut down due to protests twice. It’s simply not worth the little bit of extra money. The vice idiot is a few miles up the road from me today. I honestly believe no one should be allowed to campaign in an area with such “substantial” cases like we have here-138 new cases today. 138! And skyrocketing. It’s terrifying. JoAnn
ReplyDeleteI just talked with a guy who has a daughter same age as our college kid. They are only mid 40's-a decade younger than us. His wife was so sick with Covid two months ago, and still had lingering breathing issues. I think if Trump had it, the symptoms are being masked with massive amounts of medications and eventually wi cause his body to crash, or it was a big lie-leaning towards the latter.
DeleteI need to change the clock in my car too since I have not been in there since before the time changed. This is the time I like best and I wish it would stay this way always, but I know I am in the minority on that.
ReplyDeleteIt's good that your friends are working the polls and you'll be able to vote in person on Tuesday. That is my favorite way to vote! We voted by mail and ours were counted on October 15th, so we know our votes are in. I hope next time we will be able to vote in person.
I had to scrape frost so change the cock while the car warmed up a touch-thankfully it is an easy change. I was in an dout in just a few minutes when the polls opened
DeleteAmazingly, the friends on fb never are in disagreement on this election, so nothing to delete there. One blog I read has incendiary remarks. When I post a mild comment, there is a firestorm. So, the person invited me not to come back. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI worked the polls once. But, with this political climate, it seems a risky thing to do. Good for your friends for their care of others.
My car clock is always wrong. If I ever get a car clock at the right time, I just leave it there through the next time change...lol. It usually take me a few weeks to get all the house clocks changed. Tommy said he would change the clock in kitchen and one in living room. I was shocked.
Today, I will cook whatever we are going to eat tomorrow because I will be watching coverage all day and all night if I want to. It is a shame that bad impulses have been emboldened for the unforeseable future.
I have lingering people from high school and family, but have purged or hid most for my own mental health.
DeleteYou go girl! Your friends who work the polls are true patriots. I voted early, using a drop box at city hall to return my ballot. As far as I know, here in WI, we do not get any confirmation of it being received. I always have gone to the polls before, I enjoy doing so. On Thursday last week, and again this morning, at two different grocery stores, I encountered a person not wearing a mask. When I stepped away, both times the people LAUGHED. What is so funny about spreading a virus that can kill? My neighbors, in their late 70s, both have the virus. He is type-1 diabetic, and struggling. What is so funny about that? I have stopped following a couple of blogs, one who thinks masks are useless, another who made fun of BLM. My technical skills are also limited, and tho I tried to start a blog, I can't even figure out now how to link to it! I hope you have a good experience at the polls tomorrow. - Celie
ReplyDeleteBoth my girls mailed thiers and tracked it was through the process. bogging with the web sites is pretty easy-heck, I'm doing it.
DeleteI don't comment on political or virus stuff generally. Am trying to concentrate on living my best life whatever is thrown at us. Arilx
ReplyDeleteGood advice for all of us. Thanks you for the nice posts ou do that are educational and interesting.
DeleteI too am tired of the hogwash people are spouting about not staying safe. I am staying safe. Please stay safe for me.
ReplyDeleteI will say, your amount of activity makes me quite nervous. I hope those in your hop wear masks, and your family doesn't unnecessarily expose you and your husband. Stay safe.
DeleteAs Simon and Garfunkle once said, "I can get all the news I need from the weather report", and aside from reading the headlines, I try to stay away from the news. It's all sensationalistic and so incredibly stressful.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to just do my own thing (in a mask, 6' away) and not judge others. It's hard - I have to bite my lip when I see people in the grocery store not sanitizing or wearing a mask, though.
Hang in there, SAM.
I bite my tongue as well, and make a long berth away until they are done, but this fall I have not seen much non-maks wearers in my community. If I or DH get really ill, I will definitely be mad at myself if I didn't say anything though.
DeleteThanks to your friends! Now that is dedication!
ReplyDeleteI actually deactivated my FB four years ago as I was so sick of the political crap and lies. I think it is even worse now.
I've slowly moved to less and less political type folks, but I also feel like I need to know where people stand.
DeleteSad to say I think whichever way this election goes you're going to see violence. Can you imagine getting killed or injured just for exercising your right to vote! Goodness knows the French can complain about anything and everything but no-one is complaining about the masks. They just put them on and get on with it, or at least that's been my experience!
ReplyDeleteThat's completely sickening, isn't it? And one party promotes voter intimidation. I just hope people wait out the next few days, and someone realizes whatever happens, know that there is a full United States, and regardless of how people voted, we all deserve fair government. Let's face it though, Trump is a true lame duck if he wins, and has nothing to lose with doing anything he wants to cram down thhrats and a monster will be let out of the very loose and bent cage he was already in.
