Tomorrow is my 9th Fathers Day without a father and DH's 7th. It still feels sad to not celebrate them. My dad's birthday would have been on June 16th, his 95th! We would schedule a combination Father's Day BBQ and birthday each year, filled with volleyball games and lots of delicious food. For DH's dad, it was Saturday or Sunday at the lake, his happy place. We'll do that for DH with his girls. DS will likely connect with him to wish him happy regards for the day. For those of you with dad's still with you, I hope you have a lovely time with them.
What else is on the docket for today besides getting some food together to bring tomorrow? I need to do a grocery run, but I've done pretty good eating down the fresh stuff and not letting things go to waste. Last night I made a huge curry with rice and naan, and we can eat leftovers today and find something for DH who had a salad and chicken sandwich as he doesn’t like curry. No baking as it is still very hot-so another pan of Rice Krispy treats will be desert tomorrow, and maybe if I can find some pre-made sponge cakes will bring whip cream and strawberries.
I'm continuing to purge clothes that no way, no how, are going to be part of my wardrobe even if I lose a significant amount of weight. Things have just shifted enough, plus lifestyle is different. Most of these are basic enough to pass on for someone else to get use out of. I have a few dresses that were worn only a few times, but I think though a few years old, seem like they are still very much in fashion as not much different than what I see in adds now. I might try and resell-dip my toes into that world if my daughters will help me. I would like to stream Youtube for background noise-like a podcast almost when I work, but for some odd reason, the TV in that room won't run YoutTube. I haven't messed around enough to figure out how to solve the issue. I do this in the kitchen-like ot have meal planning, recipes, and food hauls on when I cook or clean and it feels like I have company. I live a very boring life. YouTube personalities are sometimes my office mates as well.
I am amazed that despite the heat and no rain, weeds are growing like crazy, Hearty buggers. I need to pull the weeds out of my rocks and hostas. I am happy with how my flowers are growing and this pot, that only had four smalish plantings, are now filling out the pot quite nicely. This is the extent of my summer gardening. Remember last year all the new gardeners? I wonder who kept it up this year? I've said it many times before, I am a Farmers Market girls-not a farmer. Oh-I should stop by the farmers market this morning and I can share what is in season in Minnesota!
I'm not sure what else I'll/we'll do today. I am not opposed to getting a happy hour in with anyone that is open, but likely a quiet night at home. No fire in the back yard as even though we had a short little rain on Thursday night, things are so dry a the lake, the fire pit sits lake side and no where near anything that could start on fire with an arrant spark, but I still get a bit nervous when it is so dry and if anyone leaves the fire with the embers still hot. I'll end this schmattering of my life there and get on with my Saturday.
My dad is still with us but my mom isn’t so I understand how you feel. Husband’s parents are still here but not much of a factor in his life. We hadn’t seen them in six months but crossed paths at a birthday party last week. His mom proceeded to tell me how disappointed she was in my son, without so much as a “Hi, how are you?” first because he didn’t go to college. He found a great job out of high school, in a pandemic, that pays well, has great benefits, is close to home, treats their employees very well, got a weeks paid vacation after just six months, retirement plan with an environmentally conscious and community minded company that is rapidly expanding and has potential to do all sorts of things with them in the future, without accumulating mountains of debt to get a job that he wouldn’t be happy with. Yeah, what a bum, insert eye roll here. If that’s not enough for ya, she also neglected to even text my daughter on her birthday so I think she’s laid it all out where we stand with her ;) In other news, we did go see fireworks last night and they were spectacular, found a dress so my daughter’s formal senior pictures and yes, did get a great one the other day for a more casual one. We’re about to go see my dad for a bit once this rain shower passes. PA is experiencing its normal June wetness and a huge crack of thunder woke us all up at 5:30 this am. Weather says 88 for a high Monday and 65 on Tuesday. Keep your fingers crossed for no flooding! Been through that enough in my lifetime already. Happy Father’s Day to your hubby! JoAnn
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry your in laws are so challenging. I have my own issues, but nothing near your description. Well done on your son. He can always choose more education later-so many more options for that, but good jobs are not so plentiful. We are being teased yet again with rain. Predicted to be an all day thing so we changed our plans and now barely sprinkles.
DeleteI hear you on Father's Day- my dad died in '94 and my husband the next year at age 48. My nephew's father is scum- he quit contacting nephew after he turned 18 and last child support check was paid. My grands all have great dads so at least we have that. My mother would have been 94 yesterday so around your dad's age if they both had lived. Mom died in 2001. As for boats, we had one the last 10 years of my husband's life- it was no problem at all but we kept it on a trailer in the garage of our vacation lake home (not lake front but not too far from the dock). I never had a thing to do with it but drove it when husband water skiied. We had a lot of fun with the lake and boat. When he died, I sold the lake house, my home in NoVa and boat and moved here 2 years later. No regrets!
ReplyDeleteParents loss I guess to walk out of kids life. I'll never understand even if a person can't stand the other parent.
DeleteFather's Day is not that much of a big deal here. I bought some excellent steaks earlier in the week, and we will have those on the grill. I haven't picked out which dessert I am baking. I thought of a lemon sponge pie, but, since I found apples for $0.29/lb earlier in the week, I baked an apple pie, and there's still some left.
ReplyDeleteFunny: Just last night I was trying to watch a Youtube tutorial on the t.v. in the t.v. room, but, for some reason, it wouldn't run it.
I figured out something and Youtube is back. I made strawberry rhubarb dump cake since the farmers market had some lovely rhubarb.
DeleteThose weeds grow like crazy no matter what don't they?! Your flowers are very pretty. I'm more of a farmers market type too. I've tried veggies gardens but have never had any luck. Happy shopping today and have a great time at the lake tomorrow. :)
ReplyDeleteSupposedly we're being rained out so changed plans. Rhubarb and onions were only real produce so far, but there were candles, jams, salsa and bread stands. And of course cheese shop at the farmers market.
DeleteI tend to agree with you about fires at the lake. I would be worried too when it's really dry! I also got rid of a couple of bags of clothes this week. One was a really pretty dress I bought ages ago that still had the tag on it. When I put it on it looked like 9 month old twins were having a fight in the chest area. Uuuggghhh, I've got to lose some weight!
ReplyDeleteI'm disappointed to part with one but total smash boob now and tight everwhere else. Uuuggghhh with you.
DeleteMy father died in '91 and my mother in '93. I still miss her so much. Tommy has no children, so no one to celebrate him. So, I do. It won't be much. Wait until it rains to pull the weeds. That way pulling weeds is not so hard. My hosta never had weeds because they shaded the ground. This last year was the first failed garden because something ate everything! I cannot fight it, so I am not having anything growing this year! It makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteYes, we can just celebrate people any time. Good for you.
DeleteIt's really hot/dry here, so I'm envisioning a long fire season & do worry about things like someone not putting out a fire.
ReplyDeleteNick is making burgers for tomorrow's dinner - M is very pleased with this plan. We celebrated Father's Day early with my dad while we were in Hawaii, and bought him a shirt to commemorate the trip. Nick got the exact same one, because no one adores anyone in the world more than Nick adores my dad!
DH wanted good burgers too, even though we just had them. I love that your kids and parents are so close.
Deleteyou have to admire the cheek of weeds that somehow grow despite the hostile environment.
