The Menu that Wasn't

I don't think we ate a single thing a planned last week. Here was the plan.

  • Sunday: Sweet potato wedges and chicken tenders
  • Monday: Cheddar brats and mac and cheese
  • Tuesday: Taco Tuesday
  • Wednesday: Stir fry chicken and vegetables with noodles
  • Thursday: chicken broccoli rice and cheese hotdish
  • Friday: chili or soup
  • Saturday: leftovers
Here was reality.
  • Sunday: Turkey Hoagies
  • Monday: Cracker ranch chicken and roasted potatoes
  • Tuesday: Brats and baked beans
  • Wednesday: Tuna rice and cheese hotdish
  • Thursday: Hamburgers and tots
  • Friday: Leftover chicken and baked potatoes
  • Saturday: Leftover brats, baked beans, boxed macaroni and cheese (because it sounded good!)
This week, I'll just plan options. I am avoiding the grocery store this weekend, but we'll need milk and banana, likely just a stop at Kwik Trip. I can grab taco meat there as well. I've got a lot of eggs to use up so hardboiled a half dozen for egg salad lunches and will make a quiche one night.  I'll need something for DH next Saturday, unless I can plan leftovers. Reality though, is he may end up out with friends or just make a frozen pizza.
  • Butternut squash, caramelized onion and apple pizza ( for DD1's birthday on Monday. It's delicious.)
  • Taco's
  •  Stir fry chicken and vegetables with noodles
  • Chicken broccoli rice and cheese hotdish
  • Chili
  • Chicken tortellini soup
  • Broccoli and cheddar quiche
  • Crockpot lasagna
These may or may not happen. If they do, I'm in good shape ingredient wise. As Anne says, we will eat regardless so if the plan goes elsewhere, no bother.

  1. I just make a list of meals that I can pick from each day, depending on what we're doing and what needs using up quickly. Plans for what we're having every day of the week always fall by the wayside more often than not, due to life happenings.

    1. That's more common though scheduling has helped me plan within my work day better.

  2. Sounds delicious especially the cracker ranch chicken. I have salmon patties, soup, BBQ, Baked Beans on the menu so far this week. We will probably go grocery shopping at the end of the week.

    1. The chicken did turn out nice. The baked beans were a hit too.

  3. Your menu sounds great! I will eat an egg and little tomatoes sliced bagel (Aldi) in the morning, a sandwich from home, with little raw carrots, for lunch,, and some kind of homemade soup for supper, that will consist of a mush mash of leftovers, maybe with beans, with lots of vegetables. It is a rough week at work so I need to really be able to grab and go or just heat up when I get home. Cindy in the South

    1. With it getting warm again, I just couldn't bring myself to make soup. DH willingly ate leftovers twice.

  4. Other than Holiday or special occasion meals I don't plan a menu either. I just know what we have and cook up what I feel like any particular day. Have a great Sunday!!

    1. I don't always remember what we have. This is my attempt to not waste time or food.

  5. Happy early birthday to DD1! It is also my nephew’s birthday. We started the week with leftover roast and takeout, popcorn chicken bowls and chicken alfredo. I picked up some corned beef and roast beef lunch meat at the Italian grocer and had toasty sandwiches and soup. Friday I got McDonald’s, Saturday made taco bowls. Today I’m going to make a Reuben casserole with the last of the corned beef and probably Panera wild rice soup. Leftover taco meat for tomorrow. Probably freeze the roast beef and save for Italian beef later in the week. Might make pasta salad. Might bake something. Maybe an egg casserole? We have too many eggs right now. Its DH’s birthday and he’s sick as a dog, Not Covid, but three prescriptions from Urgent Care sick. Of course it would coincide with my weekend off but I’ve got plenty to keep me busy. Or not ;) JoAnn

  6. I actually know what we're having for tea tonight, mushroom and potato Punjabi masala with half a naan each. Our philosophy in the kitchen is that same as the one we have when we're travelling - the plan is no plan!
Brats and tots - it sounds like you're eating children! xxx

    1. That's funny- never thought of the words like that, but of course! No children were part of our meal plan. Indian inspired flavors are delicious.

  7. Kwik Trip!!! We don't have them here in Ohio, but ALWAYS stop at them when we drive to/from Rochester MN. We always bring home boxes of the Kwik Trip cinnamon rolls; 1 goes next door to close neighbors, the others I freeze the rolls separately for later enjoyment. Our breakfast today? Ham and Kwik Trip cinnamon rolls!! Made me smile to see your assessment of a stop for bananas and milk "likely" to be Kwik Trip!

    1. And we forgot to stop. It was a win when we got one in town. So convenient.

  9. Last week, I changed my mind as close as thirty minutes before meals sometimes. At 6:30 pm, I put a teriyaki pork loin in the oven for eating in and hour. That will make three meals. Tommy can have potatoes and carrots and I will eat a can of green beans. If I can get up, I will roast sweet potatoes to go along with tonight's meal and others this week. We do eat!

  10. I have three new recipes to try this week. Last weeks three new meals were a resounding failure, although they were edible, no one wanted them repeated. Sometimes I wish my kids could go back to my childhood and just eat what was put in front of them, not have all their likes/ dislikes/ dietary choices/ moral stances catered for. Megan.

    1. I know what you mean. When both daughter's were here, though would did cooking, we had lots of different needs and preferences going on.
