Sizzle My Life

My son in California has been picking up quite a few jobs working on sizzle productions. You don't know what that is?  Well neither did I until he explained that a sizzle is a very short clip of a movie, television show, or feature, that is made to pitch to a producer, studio, station, or person with the means to take it to the next level. Sometimes that next level is a pilot, or maybe it's funding to move forward developing a whole series or movie. I love the term, and thought wouldn't it be nice if you could create little sizzles before jumping into something in real life?

I've got college planning on my brain.  Partially because of a nephew and a few friends with kids graduating and off to college, and because now my mail box, and daughters mail, is starting to fill with college promos. While she doesn't graduate for three more years, and this is the start, before we know it, it will be time for her to decide. Wouldn't be great to get a little preview of what is to come?  She could have a sizzle of how she fits in with a certain program, campus size, or roommate situation before making decisions.

Fast forward another decade, and DH and I could get sizzles for retirement options. How would life in another country look like with us in the starring role? Would one of us feel like Scarlet Johanson in Lost in Translation, or would we slip into the culture easily, and enjoy morning coffee at a neighborhood cafe where everyone knows us as the happy American couple? If we bought an RV as a second home and traveled the country, would we be speaking together on day 38? We could get a glimpse out of the quirky neighbors and supporting cast in our life.

Fast forward again to when either DH or I are left behind. It would be interesting to get glimpses, and make choices now about what our final needs might be, and how life back as a solo could pan out... and decide now if it is worth the effort to maintain certain strained relationships

His siblings refer to DS as the human Wikipedia, and I got an earful of statistics about sizzles and pilots, and what parentage ever go beyond the cutting room floor, and antiquated expression as it is all digital now. Virtually nothing goes beyond the sizzle creation. I'd hate to think that parts of a future life could be cut and deleted. I guess that's why I just need to plan, lay out options, and think through the possibilities, and move forward with no regrets. If you could get a glimpse of your options played out in advance, would you watch?

  1. I am quite sure I am at least two decades older than you. I (now. If I knew now what the next decade holds, maybe I could change it if I did not like it.

    1. Though there could be a ripple effect. Change one thing, and other changes not intended get made as well. What do they call that-the butterfly effect? Life gives us no previews and no do overs, that's for sure.

  2. I love, love, love the term sizzle!!!! Now instead of calling it a snack, its a sizzle. AWESOME. I have to find a way to work that in to everyday conversation.

    1. It's a preview to the appetizer! I made him say it three times-I had never heard the expression, but then again, not being in the "biz" why would I?

  3. I've always gone with the thought that I can only do what I think is best at the time - whether that has been changing jobs, moving house, or any other decisions that have had to be made. It has meant that I don't have regrets, even when things don't work out as I hoped they would.

    1. Since it is not possible to get those glimpses, your plan is the best any of us really can do. There are a few things I sure wish I might have known would cause such turmoil for years and years, but in hindsight, the writing and signs were probably already there, and not paid attention to at the time. I guess that's when you build up experience points for future decision making.

  4. I'm gonna call this six week trip I'm on at the mo a sizzle trip as it's a precursor to our bigger event next year. As far as knowing what's going to happen in the future I'm a day at a time present moment kind of person so I'm happy where I am lol

    1. I'd like to find that kind of piece of mind. Over thinking is part of my DNA.
