My Love Hate Relationship With Snow

I love water. I've been a swimmer practically from birth, taken to the public splash pool (free) on hot sweltering days, and later to the big pool, where my parents summer splurge was getting season patches for all of our swimsuits that gave us admission the whole summer. I like a good rain, particularly if it has been dry out, or dirty, and the rain refreshes it all. Dry grass becomes green again, and the air feels less stifling.

Snow, another form of water, is a love and a scourge for me. I don't know how my mind would make it from November to April with no green, no color on the trees, a brown and beige pallet everywhere if most of the ground was not covered with a pillow of white. As a child I loved sledding, still do if I have a soft tube that guarantees no jarring to my lower back. With proper footwear and temperatures above 18F, a good walk in the snow is exhilarating. Pup really loves jumping in, almost over his head, popping up, and jumping again. I swear he must have a little husky in him. Pup and children and snow, and a beautiful clean white landscape are simple pleasures. Snow and driving, not so much.

Monday, a slight dusting on the roads, barely an inch doubled my commute home, even leaving what I thought was ahead of rush hour as DD2 had a orthodontist appointment. I had to call DH to leave work to bring her there. I arrived just as her appointment ended. A two hour commute yesterday morning and more snow during the day, left me jockeying my schedule around because of arriving so late. I then left early again to try and beat the traffic, still adding 15 minutes, and worked from home into the evening, disrupting home life. Guess what? More snow today, but of course these little 1-3 inch snow falls aren't a true snow day, just slow days. Work, school, activities go on, and I spend my time shoveling, dusting off cars, driving slow, generally unproductive, and do it again tomorrow. I'm annoyed DH did not get the snow blower fixed. It should be a Minnesota home staple, but last year it crashed, and never got repaired. He is like that-doesn't take care of things, and I can't lift the thing to get it taken in somewhere.

Variation of this meme have been going around Facebook lately.  A little humor to keep those of us already sick of winter looking at the bright side. I think I'll take Frosty over this guy at my front door.

  1. I love that meme! Lol That is why we live in Ohio. I also have a love/hate relationship with snow. It is pretty and I love the look and the smell of snow but hate driving in it. Lately though our issue has been with ice. Would rather have snow than ice.... Of course being in Ohio we have weeks where we get a bit of everything. For example just this week alone we've had negative windchills, temps of 1 degree, snow of about 2 inches, ice of about 0.25 inches, high winds of 60mph+, thunderstorms,...oh and temps are supposed to be in the high 50s tomorrow with rain. I guess you can believe the saying "in Ohio if you don't like the weather wait 5 minutes and it will change." lol Have a great day!

    1. The driving is the worst bit, but yet there is something magical about snow, when I am safely home!

  2. Stay warm! I love snow, but only when I don't have to drive in it, and when I get to ski. ;-) Otherwise, it serves little to no purpose.

    1. I like that it covers the ugly beige and brown.

  3. I prefer being on the inside looking out at this time of year. When I was young it didn't bother me to drive through huge snow drifts but now I can barely unclench my fingers from the steering wheel after a few minutes of driving in the snow. My funniest snow-driving story is the day I dug out my truck of about 18" of snow and slowly made my way to school only to find a sign on the front door of the school saying it was closed due to snow. Boo!

    1. I have had sore shoulders this whole week, clenched, but ready to react to stupid driving.

  4. I kind of love the snow but the part where the air hurts your face... yeah, the cold really gets to me after awhile. Although driving in it would be cake in a well taken care of capable vehicle surrounded by fellow drivers who understand winter driving. Sadly, the second part is hard to come by. Like people FLYING by in four wheel drive trucks on sheer ice that for some reason think their four wheel drive makes them invincible. Uh, no. Not on ice! Or the people who drive five miles an hour on the highway just because there's snow on the road. You're going to kill the rest of us! Stop doing that. Oh and slamming on the breaks because there's an accident on the side of the road. Yeah, that's clearly NOT a slick spot. Clearly ice, or slick slush didn't cause the other driver to drive off the road so slamming on your breaks is obviously not going to be dangerous or cause your car to start to spin. (catch the intense sarcasm)

I guess if I was the only one driving in all the snow and ice and slush, ect; I'd be a happy driver. It's the rest of the people out there that scare me the most, not the weather. Sorry for the super cynical comment. I guess driving hours a day for the past 12 years for work and having to drive in many blizzards and other situations has given me road rage, hehe! Have I mentioned how absolutely wonderful it is that I now work three minutes from home?!?!?

    1. Yes-If I was alone on the road, a whole different expereince, but every thing you typed is frustrating to me as well about poor winter drivers.

  5. I am reading of y'alls love hate relationship with snow as I sit here in shorts and flip flops after being iced in on Saturday. What difference a few days make.

    1. I know in my golden years-less than a decade I hope, I will spend most of my winter in flip flops! Something to look forward to after the first of the year I think. Christmas snowy wonderland, then bye bye!
