Comfort When You Need it Most

As I replied to all in my comments, I am beginning to doubt any of us in our house will be 100% ever again. DD2 and DH are coughing almost as much as I am, but fortunately don't have the chest rattling and wheezing. It will pass, and hopefully March will see us all fit as fiddles. DD2 heads on her trip in just two weeks! A beautiful, long week in Costa Rica. Poor kid has been using every spare minute to try and get caught up with school work, but missing 3+ days of school is a bear. She was really hoping for a snow day, but alas, the snow storm we were promised scooted to the south, and we are just sort of whitened up and dusted. I guess though as you head farther south, in 15 mile increments, the inches go up at the same rate, leaving a few feet on the ground.

In other non-weather, non-illness news, my heart is hurting for my older daughter, who made the decision to end her relationship with her boyfriend. It was 100% the right decision, but doesn't change the fact that she is hurt and sad, and feels like life is pretty crap right now. I'm glad though she has a ton of resiliency, and more important, knows her self worth and what she deserves, and who deserves her. While seven months is a long time, better to realize before any permanent commitment was made that he was not the man she thought he was.

Poor health and heart ache, both require heavy doses of comfort to weather the storm. For me, I've been surrounding myself with my super soft Sherpa blanket, forever clutching a mug of my favorite Good Earth tea. For her, a night out with her friends and an extra long bout at the gym. For both of us, meals that won't cling to our insides, but fuel our healing. Yesterday I finally felt some hunger and was tempted to have DH run and get me a burger. Instead, I made a salad of spinach, avocado, a little cheddar, and some poppy seed dressing with lots of pepper. It fueled me well, and I put in almost a full day of work, remotely of course, and even joined in on a conference call, mostly on mute of course.

She leaves for a week long business trip on Monday. I'm hopeful she will be busy and while the hurt is so new and raw, be able to start putting herself first again. Helen Keller was quoted, "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved."  Sometimes a good promising quote is a sort of comfort too.

  1. Breaking up is so hard, as you said. It's one of those pains you forget about quickly later, when you meet someone else, but in the moment . . . so much thinking & questioning & difficulty. Here's hoping EVERYONE in your family is fully recovered, and for your daughter to get through her heart break quickly. Maybe the work trip can serve as a distraction for her.

    1. I hope so too. She is a gem, and deserves to be with one who equally shines.

  2. Sorry to hear about your daughter but like you said, better to find out now than invest a large amount of your life with someone. I know people who were married for 10 years only to find out they did not have a clue who their other half was/what they were hiding. I am wishing welness for your whole family!

    1. You are of course, very right-I've known some pretty good actors over the years. The coughing is ever present still.

  3. Heartache is real and painful but given a bit of time becomes just a memory.
I hope all of you recover quickly cause you have had this crud long enough

    1. I'm hopeful she moved on quickly, but having been through a similar pattern before, she'll be more leery and watch for red flags sooner. We are crud exhausted!

  4. Heartache can lower one's immunity and invite illness. I'm sorry for your daughter's heartache; we are going through the same thing here as Kazi broke up with her boyfriend two weeks ago. Good friends and lengthy trips to the gym are her antidote as well.

    1. It doesn't get any easier watching our children go through tough stuff, does it? Thankfully both our girls seem to have good heads on their shoulders and are putting their time into their own mental and physical health.

  5. I wish to all your family a speedy recovery! And even though our heart does not heal as fast as our body (typically, anyway), I wish your dear daughter find true happiness soon!
