“I'll have gone
to at least two music performances that my kid was not performing in. I'm
talking intentionally planned outings to hear an accomplished musician, not
haphazardly stumbled into an open mike night, or house band.” This was on my
January 2nd list of actions I hope to complete by the end of 2017.
This has been a summer of music above and beyond my daughter. Granted, she has
done a fair amount of playing as well. I’ve packed the music experience in
July, starting with a July 1 concert at the nearby casino outdoor concert
venue. DH and I enjoyed a jazz trio the following weekend at a local vineyard.
Just yesterday, DD2 and I went down by the river as part of our community
“days” to hear the local finale of the Minnesota Sings qualifiers. Technically,
these were youth, 15-25, so not professional, but still pretty good
entertainment.
One contestant
quoted someone in her interview something along the lines of, “Music sounds
like how feeling’ feel.” If anyone knows the exact quote and who by, leave it
in the comments. Not being a musician myself, other than singing along with
incorrect lyrics to my car radio, I ‘m not entirely getting the quote, but I do
love live music. A recent high school graduate from DD2’s school, the lead in
the high school Les Mis production, was selected as one of two who would go
onto the statewide competition in September. That was pretty cool.
I want to do a
shout out, to Meri, Val's daughter at , Sew Not My Day who will be performing
at their state fair. I can’t wait until Val can get the video posted. She’s shared snippets before and her daughter
is wonderful. Speaking of state fairs, I am working a shift at it the last week
of August. We are about every three-four year fair goers a family, and it has
been four years for us, so this stretch may go longer. It is usually hot,
crowded, expensive, and the smells alone pack on the pounds, so I’m hoping I
work without too much partaking of the deep fried anything. However, what we do
love is the wide variety of music, from the extra ticket Grand Stand shows, to
the plethora of free stages throughout the grounds, and the performances in the
4-H buildings. So much music to enjoy. We may spend an evening at our county
fair this year instead, which will run the second week in August, but need to
see what the music line up is.
Who out there
are community celebration, county, or state fair goers? Do you go for the
music, the food, or for something else? Anyone else an intermittent attender
like me?
We have gone to our county fair every year we have lived here. Easy considering we live 10 minutes from the fairgounds. Unfortunately I have decided not to go this year. Our fair has really gone downhill. They have completely done away with any musical acts this year and instead added another night of harness racing. I heard attendance has been way down the last 3 days including the first day which was free day. Hubby goes to cover sorting events there so I may have him bring me home a funnel cake. Other than that I dont feel like I will miss anything this year.
ReplyDeleteI guess I haven't seen the line up yet, so perhaps it wil be all tractor pulls. I still like the 4 H building and perhaps can get there for Arts In. You have a good idea with take home fair food!
DeleteI really enjoy the music clips that Val posts - even her husband playing the bagpipes :) I'm a big fan of live music too and we have so many summer festivals around here which are free where there are several stages set up around a downtown park.
