Thrifty Thursday-Adding the Small Things

I'm no where near normalizing in life, but I slowly am getting to a better organized home. Every project is just not going as slick as I'd like, but nothing major has gone wrong, so there is that. Oh the bank account though is crying. I really am trying to find ways to not spend rather than just save, but you know, life. I've scratched deep and found a few moment of thrift, or at least a touch less costly.

  • The Mothers Day brunch was really good, but quite expensive compared to what a regular meal would have cost at this particular place. The buffet included a Mimosa or a Bloody Mary. We were going to order one for an adult with my daughter and nephew who were full price, but not able to drink them. Instead, she offered us a lower price for their meals. It seems a few people didn't think you should include a drink cost for  13-20 year olds, so they came up with a $6 lower price on the spot..
  • I did not overbuy paint for the chairs, which is unusual for me t not have leftovers. I watched a couple tutorials and bought exactly the right amount. Their not perfect, but I am happy with how they turned out. The table is still a work in progress.
  • DD1 was really sick last week. I stopped to check on her and she finally was feeling like eating something. Using ingredients she had, I made a curry soup that fed her a couple meals. It was loaded with turmeric as well and that is supposed to have some sort of  healthy property's for colds and flu.
  • The melatonin and the vitamin D tablets I uSe were on special in a two pack, and ended up being $5 less than the equivalent amount bought separately.
  • We spent money to order transcripts, but the college credit will help ensure DD2 finishes college in the four years with both majors complete. An extra semester is a no go on the thrift department and being ale to maximize her education is a win.
That's all I have but I'll keep a watchful eye out. I restocked my desk so I don't buy expensive lunches on days I forget to pack. I used gas coupons. These things are my norm, but they do add up. Any in s in your life this week for saving money?

  1. That’s a great option at the restaurant, I never managed to purchase the right amount of paint, usually I under estimate lol

    1. Imagine what watching tutorials and planning can do! I usually wing it, and then am wrong.

  2. We've done our normal stuff (prepped meals on weekends, driven the electric car + charged for free at work). I've also been reading books I received for free at work. I also was able to use a $200 United credit I received, and applied it to a work flight, so I'll get that money back from work. I bought discounted gift cards for a couple of personal flights we have coming up.

Oh, and a discounted gift card I bought ended up being refunded by the site (it didn't have a valid balance after all). I had used a $10 promo code on it, and asked for another code for another purchase (so I could rebuy). They instead just credited my account, so I can use the $200 any time.

    1. Leveraging your points for a work trip and getting cash back is very cool. I have some parking expenses I need to submit.

  3. I would not have been happy paying for drinks for minors who could not have one. Smart move on the restaurants part to offer the non drink option.
Things add up quickly so any savings are great. The additional savings for your daughters college experience is beyond great!

    1. Had we not asked though, we would have probably paid the higher price without the drinks as it wasn't on our reservation that two were 13-20. I was a bit annoyed with the higher price because I am not a bloody mary drinker and a mimosa was basically a shot of champagne with OJ, which was already part of the buffet. So I and my niece essentially each paid $6 for a champagne shot. It know it was nice that they had the alternative drink form the Bloody Mary, but would have preferred anon-alcohol buffet option. That being said, it was tasty, if small.

  4. Brunches are always super expensive especially on a holiday, but if it is to honor a mother so be it. I was pleased on Mother's day to provide the whole meal my kids and Hubby cooked out of the freezer and stockpile, that doean't always happen here.:)

    1. Maybe next year since my house should be all nice and organized right, I'll offer to host a brunch. I could fee the entire crew of 14 for half what our bill alone came to, let alone everyone's combined. Plus, I could make vegan friendly dishes and my older daughter would join.

  5. I opted for a different type of flooring in the hallway than the one I had originally chosen, and my husband is going to lay it. It's saved us £200 ($255). Whilst still an outlay, it's a lot less than it would have been, and we desperately needed new flooring.

    1. That's awesome. I splurged on the floors, but I think they are timeless, so when some point in the future we sell, they should still be in that neutral tone that homebuyers want.

  6. I hope your daughter is feeling better, Sam.

    1. She finally is starting to, but what a lingering illness that started the Tuesday night before Mother's Day and still this week she hadn't completely shaken the cough. Thank you for the well wishes.
