Thrifty Thursday-Frugal Roots Edition

The past week has had a few financial kicks in the gut. I'm feeling like we are going backwards. Hopefully, I'm seeing a temporary blip, but it makes the resolve to find the frugal wins all the more important. My frugal roots are just not spending and maybe I can get back to more days and weeks like that. Until I master some no spend challenges, here's what I came up with for thrift this past week.

  • I saved  a package of brats bought for the 4th of July that got tucked into the back of the met drawer. I know technically they wouldn't go bad a day or two past the sell by date, but I don't trust  fresh meat and these were dated 7/13.I boiled them on Saturday so they just needed to be thrown on the grill Sunday for lunch.
  • We used the May-July free pizza from the Marching Band Papa Murphy's fundraiser card for Sunday night supper. I often buy those deal cards the kids sell and then forget about them and chalk it up as a donation. We at least will use what we spent if we get the free pizza each quarter.
  • I know it is not a need at all, but DD1 gave us the tip that a 32 inch smart TV was part of the Amazon Prime sale for $99. DD2 was planning on getting one for her dorm room and the lowest priced one we had found prior was $129. She had planned to use Target gift Card money but now will divert those to other actual needs in the future.
  • I moved office-finally yesterday. I saw several coworkers head to Target to buy assorted décor to give their space a refresh, I passed. Instead, I'll look at what I have at home, like an area rug that isn't being used, and some art work. I could use a desk lamp because the overhead lighting is harsh, but I'll see what I can come up with here.
  • Trivia last night only cost me my tip bucket money as we were the winners the previous week and used the gift card for a round. I didn't feel like a second one as I haven't been sleeping well.
I joined a small batch canning group on Facebook this week. I'd like to do more with the season's bounty to enjoy throughout the year. With little freezer space, canning could be a real help. I'm off tomorrow and am going to check out a few garage sales. Not that I want other peoples cast offs, but to give me ideas on how to price things if I do get my act together this fall and host one. Maybe I'll even spot something suitable for a resell. Maybe I'll score some canning jars which are so expensive to buy new. I'll be interested to read about your wins if you blog this weekend. I know most do this on Friday and it is a mainstay for my morning read.

  1. I think the 99 buck tv is a really good bargain. I watched a Ninja air fryer/instapot during prime days. It was significantly reduced and now I am having regret for not buying it even though I did not truly "need" it. I guess now I will have to wait until Black Friday and stalk it then.
I need to go to a garage sale to figure how to price things too. TheHub and I are about to have a major purge and I have no idea how to price anything.
July is usually not a terribly spendy month here, thank goodness!

    1. I know several people that bought the air fryers this week. July should have been a good catchup month, and maybe will still be.

  2. Good work! I bought the Amazon $25 gift card to earn a $5 gift card, which was my only Prime day purchase.

I'm always especially pleased when I can avoid food waste. It feels like a small thing, but for whatever reason, it feels better than some bigger wins.

    1. I didn't even notice that offer. Now I feel like I gave $5 away!

  3. Wow great deal on the tv. Remember back in the 80s when even a basic tv was $500 plus? and VCRs $2-300? Mom used to rent a VCR about once a month for a movie marathon treat as we couldn't afford one. Do you boil your brats in beer and onion? We do and it adds great flavor - just discovered that last year.

    1. We do our brought I beer, but not onion-that would be a nice flavor addition. My sister won a VCR at her all night grad party, the year after I graduated. It was like a lottery win for entertainment back in 1985!

  4. I wondered if you were going to decorate your office and I am proud of you that you did not succumb to all the cut stuff. Because after all it is just stuff. I love to re purpose things. You can get canning jars at second hand stores but be careful sometimes they are just as high as the sales. Yard sales are better.

    1. I've got some frames laying around to put some travel and a family picture up. I have a coupe old calendars that I kept because I liked the art work. For now the uncluttered look is good.

    1. It's a wait and see kind of money issue. Praying it gets resolved.
