Some Plans to Look Forward To

I realized after writing my Blue January post and the comments that follow, that I am a pretty social being. While I cherish good quality time alone to spend on my own devices, I miss get togethers, laughing and chatting with friends and family, and the business of life. While work last week was a bit stressful, I like the people I work with, and had many parts of each day that were down right enjoyable! Trivia was really fun-we actually were tied for first at intermission, but a bad sound round and a bad round on Mountains, dropped us to 3rd place. The other teams were all good fun, and there was a lot of bantering and answer comparing between the half's. It is not about winning, though $$$ towards future beer is always nice, but the getting out with friends and neighbors.

The mom's friends/soup sisters have not gotten together since summer. The other four still have kids at home, two have kids in the same show choir, so they are all still in the busy parenting mode. I noticed though our local regional park is having a candlelight walk, ski, or snowshoe event on February 7th. It looked very cool and I convinced them all to join me. There is an $8 fee to help cover the extra grooming, the luminary's that will guide the paths, and S'more, hot chocolate and cider stations. The weather the day of will always be a question, but we all have good warm stuff, and  no doubt will end up somewhere for an adult beverage or two. The morning after, the Moms of Teens group is having a brunch get together. I'm not the only empty nester and am still included (DD2s a teen still after all.) S planned it to be part social, part open house for her business, and invited a few women with their own small business to talk about their work.

February is shaping up to be a very busy month, mixed with at least weekend day with nothing on the calendar. That's the kind of schedule I like-a mix of down time and things to look forward to. I commend people who are very happy with their own, or own families company most of the time. I get the need sometimes as well to disengage. But I also don't like to miss out on what's going on outside of work and my home. In the winter that is more important to me, as I battle the blues. Not today though. Other than a few trips outside to move blowing snow around, I am staying put. Stuff for soup is in the crock pot and I'm about to drag the bread maker out to first get the cinnamon roll dough going and then a loaf of bread. I think I'll make  a small apple crisp as well, a treat for DH who will no doubt come home very cold and tired. If you are in the cold zone, what are you doing to  keep yourself busy while staying on top of the snow? If you have nice weather, let me live vicariously through you and share your day.

  1. Our temps have been absurdly warm so far and scattered days have been beautiful, but mostly it has rained__a lot! The difference is when you walk out you are bundled for the cold and snow brushes off. I have been drenched several times. When we have weather like this we also have fairly high winds and the umbrellas and rain gear do limited good since the rain blows sideways. Which is the price you pay for flip flop weather in January!

    1. Anne's weather is my weather since we live so close. However, I am not forced out into the blowing rain.

    2. The icy bits blowing literally do cut exposed skin. I understand the ick of blowing rain though too. That's the end of April and May.

  2. We had snow the earlier part of this week. We got about 2 inches total, but further south, it was bad enough to cancel all college classes for the week. School was cancelled one day, on a two hour delay for the rest of the week. I must say, I really enjoyed it. Today it is low 40's and overcast, and almost all the snow has melted.
I am going to make some sort of chicken for dinner tonight, tomorrow or Monday I have a roast beef dinner planned. I prefer Sunday, but DH and I have a 1:30 appointment to pick out blinds on Sunday. I haven't really baked much this past week. I baked a peanutbutter sheet cake last weekend, and made a German chocolate pie for eldest's birthday--I may have to get myself into my kitchen!

    1. The bread maker died. The timer went off for dough and nothing had happened. I kneaded by hand and think I salvaged the rolls, but I think they may be heavy. I'll try and figure out if I can fix.

    2. You can use a stand mixer with dough attachment to knead--that's what I do. I didn't want to sacrifice counter space for a bread machine.

  3. It is so nice that you still feel that you have a social group after becoming an empty nester. I wish I lived closer as we could have so much fun together. How is your husband?

  4. You sound like you are getting more and more "events" planned and I think that's lovely. I find that however many things I plan I still get everything else done anyway so why not go out and socialize. And we were forecast snow today but down here we didn't get any. I did run into the next village though and on the way back skidded on black ice twice - and this despite my snow tyres - so I guess I shouldn't be tricked into thinking it's spring just because it's so glorious! Winter is still knocking on the door!

  5. This post sounded so content and I mean that in a good way. :) We didn't get much snow overnight, but we did get ice which cancelled Ben's basketball game this morning. Now it is raining and the winds have picked up. It is miserable out. I have a chicken in the crockpot and I made a chocolate cake for later. Now I am relaxing before I head in to finish dinner. Hope you have a good rest of your weekend :)

  6. It was sunny & 72 here in AZ today, so I took a nice bike ride then sat out back on the patio to work on my tan for about 30 minutes! We are snowbirds, so always love hearing of the cold back home in the mid-west! Stay warm & safe!

    1. That is a good day. I will have to get a fat tire bike for when I hope we become snowbirds.
