Meals When I Am Under the Weather

Image:PosterMyWall

I'm still feeling about the same, but happy to share I had an email notification this morning of negative test! I’m very relieved, though will continue to be cautious. All the crowds celebrating standing so close, some unmasked, made me edgy. It’s likely allergies/cold, but I’m prone to bronchitis so will monitor and not declare all’s great yet. I'm not coughing a lot, but when I do, it is long and deep, and feels down to my chest. Then, I stop and feel OK again. I don't want DH running around to stores either after making a stop after work yesterday. I'll think about meal options from what we have on hand. First though, here's a recap of what we had last week:

  • Sunday:  Aldi red bag chicken and onion rings
  • Monday: Mushroom ravioli with tomatoes and zucchini
  • Tuesday: Chicken Kiev or cordon bleu, rice pilaf
  • Wednesday: DH had soup and grilled cheese-I ate lunch very late so wasn't hungry and "just grabbed a snack later" (remember the turned into our parents commercial)
  • Thursday: Cottage Pie
  • Friday: Goulash
  • Saturday: Chicken Tortellini soup, baguette
I  haven't grocery shopped in the last week including no stops at Kwik Trip. Last Sunday DHS picked up a few things when he needed some bathroom supplies for himself like razors and deodorant. He stopped for  the sandwich bread for his lunches, bananas, baguette, hotdog buns, and hamburger buns cottage cheese and mozzarella cheese after work yesterday, plus some ginger ale for me-and popsicles. Between that and my shops on  October 30, 31, and the pantry, here are options to keep us out of stores until I feel better, even without COVID.

  • Sausage, cheddar apple meatballs, with some sort of sides
  • Homemade pizza flat breads with olives, onions, and pepperoni
  • Cheddar broccoli  soup
  • Carnitas (still have the pork roast for this) with tortillas, rice, and cheese
  • Tuna hotdish with vegetables
  • Chicken skewers with vegetables and rice pilaf
  • Chicken broccoli cheese and rice hotdish
  • Brats (maybe on the grill) with onions, sweet potato wedges
  • Rice Hotdish with carrots and celery
  • Sloppy Joe's and some sort of potato-probably wedges
  • Pasta Bolognese
  • Crockpot pasta
  • Mandarin Orange Chicken, rice and steamed veg
  • Hamburgers with the fixings, tots, fries
  • Tika Masala Curry for me-leftovers for DH (he doesn't like the flavors)

It's all pretty easy stuff, but will yield lunch leftovers and maybe a leftover night or two as well. There is about 1/2 of the cottage pie and a good two bowls of soup left already, likely lunch today. There's also frozen football foods-Lottsa mozza pizza, egg rolls, jalapeno poppers and boxed shells and cheese which DH loves. I could get creative and stretch meals until the weekend before Thanksgiving with no one feeling deprived. I don’t know yet what DH spent yesterday but we were already at $205 for household and groceries and Take Out in a single week. I’d love to keep to $400, but with Thanksgiving roughly estimated to be $75 or so, not likely. It’s my game though. How about your menu? Any favorites for when you are feeling under the weather but not too sick?

  1. Congrats on the negative test - great news! So happy for you & hope you are feeling better.

We like easy & bland things when no one is feeling well. My go go comfort food is a really good potato or chicken noodle soup with homemade bread. Yum.

We're doing tortellini & some sort of protein this week, sloppy joes & a chicken skillet bake with bacon & sprouts that sounds really nice & fall like

    1. The tortellini soup was a feeling less well comfort food. I have a bowl for my lunch later and froze two servings fo future enjoyment. I think we will have sloppy joes as well.

  3. I am so relieved that your test is negative! All your meals sound great. I tend to want soups and more soups when I'm not feeling well. Actually I crave soup all the time during fall and winter anyway. Nothing like a big pot of homemade soup! I sure hope you are feeling better soon.

  6. Glad your test came back negative. I'll be taking one before we have the Mooches over for Turkey day as a precaution because of working the polls.

    1. My daughters school has some good protocol to help mitigate risk going home and coming back to school. Mooches? I take it that is names for extended family that do not reciprocate?

  7. I’m so happy to hear that your test came back negative. I think my more people would get tested if the saliva test was readily available. I crave junk food, like fast food, drive-thru McDonald’s junk food when I’m sick. No clue why. Maybe it’s just the fact that I don’t have to make it and it’s easy cleanup. I have a light week ahead of me so it was easy to meal plan. Pizza, pork chops on the grill, steak salads, pasta and garlic bread, chicken fried rice, boneless turkey breast in the crockpot. Nice variety, easy peasy. After this week, the work insanity begins. JoAnn

    1. Soon the test I had will be available state wide an not just in the starting counties. I hope people take advantage of it. It also gave me peace of mind that the steps I've bee doing to avoid risk, despite others not giving a damn about the risk, was worth it. You know a good greasy burger with toppings sure tastes goods sometime to me-but not with sore throat and cough. We'll do lots of fried rice when my daughter is home as she loves it, and it is a good way to use up stuff we already have.

  8. I too am glad of the news.
I have a handful of goodies to gobble when feeling glum. Carbs are the pancea of all ill feelings.

  10. Good news on the covid test - you just have to get better now so spoil yourself for a bit. I agree with JoAnn, I'm sure more people would get tested if they could use the saliva test.

    1. Hopefully the country moves in this direction but it will be months to move what Minnesota is doing across the country under the current administration. If nothing else, in the spirit of science and learning will help people make their own choices informed.

  12. Good news! I tend to want KFC--breast, slaw, mashed potatoes, and another little dish of gravy. I instantly feel better. Anything I can put in one dish and cook is my kind of meal when I am sick, even if it is chicked in an oven bag with vegetables tossed in. Of course, then I don't feel like taking it all out and storing it. But, of course, I do. I tend to get bronchitis often, chronic bronchitis. I take generic Mucinex with only the one ingredient, guaifenisin. I may have spelled that wrong. I cannot take NSAIDs and need to cough it out.

  16. Hope you're feeling better! I am up extra early- didn't do much over the weekend and want to get most of my November work completed this week. I was thinking when I'm sick, I just make sandwiches- easy and something I don't have often. I love a hard roll with some salami and cheese.

  17. do you have a humidifier in the house? Daughter 4 and Brother get brochities twice a year really bad, once they got a humidifier it doesn't get at bad. My doctor told me to get one also (I use a small one in bedroom also) as they are finding it helps elderly like me from getting sick as bad.

    1. We have a humidifier, so could give it a try. If more allergies-I probably just need to get the irritants gone through a hard freeze. The warm and windy weather really stirred things up.
