Thrifty Thursday- I Like Home Edition

While it was good to get out of my box, literally and figuratively, and go to a pure professional development conference, it's good to be home. I should have done better removing myself from work emails, but the truth is things would just pile up. I mostly managed to keep email and teams chat off during sessions, meal, and social times. Speaking of meals, I'm less fussy and particular when I don't need to cook. What a treat to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner ready to go, buffet style. Yesterday then was our whole company wide professional development day. No meals were provided except from my kitchen. With that, here's what passed for frugal or thrifty from my humble abode.

  • Brought my own dinner to my daughter's on Friday. She made herself stuffed peppers using her own and the remains of a box of couscous.
  • It was National Cheese curd day on Saturday, October 15. Who knew? Bought cheddar cards at BOGO so two pounds for $5. Plus, crumbles for cooking at $2.29 pound, different varieties.
  • At Sam's Club, we found grandpups food ( though he had different food at shelter based on donations) for considerably less per pound than she had paid previously. Other good deals were DH's gummy vitamins, more than 1/3 less per day than Walmart.
  • DH really wanted pizza, but we used a BOGO meal card. This provided lunch and a Sunday snack for him.
  • Filled up in cheaper gas in town, with a coupon, getting it for $3.17 a gallon. I still have over a quarter tank as my car gets pretty good highway miles per gallon and my drive was almost all highway.
  • Though the last thing I wanted to do was cook Tuesday night, I found $2.99 pound ground beef in my freezer, thawed on counter, then defrosted in microwave and made burgers with leftovers for Wednesday lunch for both of us.
  • While I blew the " no heat until November" challenge with the unusually low temperatures, I keep low and use sweaters and slippers.
  • Grand pup continues to be free exercise.
We don't have firm plans other than going to church Sunday morning. I'm not sure what my daughter has going, but grandpup may hang with us a bit. I want us to work with him on throwing and catching things as that will help get different exercise for him. We also want to get him socialized to the brewery so he can start tagging along on trivia. It's dog friendly. The other focus is in cleaning the house and some purging. It's cozy inside when it's cold outside, but we're supposed to warm up and have sun. There's a satisfaction in appreciating the home you have. I want to make it cozy for all of us as it gets colder and colder. What passed for thrift in your week?

  1. Glad to hear you had a nice trip. I love being home. In the summer we spend a lot of time in the yard or on the patio and in the winter we love cozying up inside.

    1. Today ended up perfect and I was able to get for a couple walks. I can't wait to redo our back patio.

  2. It is indeed such a luxury to have someone else do the cooking and washing up isn't it. When I go away I LOVE coming back to my hotel room to find that someone has made my bed. It just feels like such a treat, even though it only takes 10 seconds for me to make my bed at home!

    1. Since it was two nights only, no housekeeping but I know what you mean. Even when I straighten up the room, the little touches the housekeeping staff do does feel indulgent.

  3. I missed you and I think you definitely need to come on the trip next time. I love cheese curds and will always eat way too many. I just turned on the heat and wanted to wait until November but just could not sit here shivering.

    1. I had to give in when DH was just coughing and chilled. I'm fine wearing thick slippers. Let me know where and when!

  4. Thrift didn't make much of an appearance at my house this week. I have been culling my extensive wardrobe, menopause and employment changes mean half of it never gets worn, but have been trying to do it in a thoughtful way, other than just dumping it all. I haven't replaced any of it, so I guess that's thrift. Megan

  5. I think for the first time ever, I turned on the heat before November 1st. It got down to 33 degrees at my work house in south Ala. , setting a new record for this early in the year! I just use a couple of those roll around plug in electric heaters that looks like a radiator bc really don’t need heat much…. Well, usually…….Cindy in the South

    1. It's not fun to feel chilled to the bone. I'll conserve by keeping the setting low.

  6. I agree with you completely. It definitely feels good to get home from a trip but I enjoy getting away from reality. I spent the day cleaning, took a wander around Goodwill and found a fitted blue Nike jacket for DD for $2.90. A steal! I was going to get a flu shot but the line was 20 deep ahead of me so I passed today. They are giving away $5 off grocery coupons for each vaccine, so I suppose that’s why they were so busy. We turned our furnace on a few weeks ago but only use it at night and in the morning as needed. We got some wet snow yesterday, next week it’s going to be 70. JoAnn

    1. That's a great price on the jacket. We popped in to find toys for dog but the Goodwill wanted insane prices for toys that would be destroyed in minutes.
