Friday Free for All- Don't Get Sucked In

TGIF! It was a long work week considering I technically was in travel mode on Sunday afternoon. I think I'm about the only one working today as it's fall education break in Minnesota. This four to five day weekend has become one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. For my weekend, I'm looking forward to just getting things done, maybe connect with friends, enjoy some family time. Friday's a no topic blog day, just whatever comes to mind.

On Not Getting Sucked In

I admit I was so sucked in to the visceral anger of Trump's whole four years in office. It made me physically sick thinking he had access to swindle with presidential authority, looked at women as subhuman, and had access to nuclear codes. Biden was probably my last choice to be on the ticket in 2020. I still am pissed how it came about. But, the current economic climate is so far from the result of any one person's actions or inactions, but global decisions made again and again that benefit the rich. Trickle down economics didn't work when Reagan touted it, and it's never going to work now. Rich people like being rich, and too many have a zero sum game mentality. But, I refuse to get sucked into the hate and anger again. Other than Putin, who's power hungry aggression to amass more land under Russian control, there is plenty of blame to throw around the world without naming a single person.

It was a big debate week. No one said much of anything that I can tell. My mailbox is filled with political ads; they go right in the recycling bin, even from candidates I'll likely vote for. I'm going to vote my conscience on November 8, and whatever happens, I'll figure out what to do for my family, my community, and how to make the best life with however those in Washington or for me, St Paul, try to control our fates. I'm not getting sucked into hate, blame, and dispair, but will look for where I can be part of solutions, even just day to day, in my family.

Soup Poll Results

If you read the comments in my Wednesday soup post, with the exception of a few non-soup people, you all love soup and shared tons of links. Versions of wild rice and potato seemed to bubble up, as well as taco or tortilla soups. I keep Better than Bullion on hand to help my broth, but I try to make my own when possible. I learned Scotland doesn't blitz their soup like I've seen in England. It was a fun post to read comments.

A New Blog?

I'm toying with adding a blog just for the dogs. This would be more to look at the changes, successes, challenges, and growth of the grandpup, who spends the bulk of his time with me, and my pup in his senior years. It would spare you all incessant dog details unless you want them. If I do, November would be a good time to start. He'll turn 7 months and will have dog training starting the 15th of November. It definitely would not be daily, more a check in periodically. The cute picture would still appear from time to time. I love the fur babies.

How do you feel about the political state of the world right now? Are you less angry and more motivated to hold people accountable? Importantly, what's your final stance on soup and pets?

  1. It doesn't matter where you live, politicians are all the same, pals of the rich. i can't get dragged into it either. We are now voting for the mayor of Toronto. I can't say I don't like the current (running for 3rd term) even though I know he is filthy rich and helps his cronies too. Our current city councilor came to the door asking if we would vote for him. It's too bad by DH answered and only said no, it's time for a change. I would have said I'm tired of rich white men and it is time to vote for a woman.

    1. I used to say we need to turn the offices female to really make change. Then a few of the last crop that were voted in made me rethink that as a sole stance on getting men out. JK- I too am tired of rich and non rich men deciding things.

  2. Happy Friday Sam!! I was off work yesterday but it still seems like it was an incredibly long work week so I am really looking forward to the weekend. It was a cold week here with low's in the 20's and highs in the 40's or 50's all week but now this weekend it is supposed to be a high of 80 for a couple of days before returning to Fall weather. Looks like we're going from comfort food to grilling this weekend.

    1. The ping pong weather adds to my frazzle. It's hard changing gears. Fall food is comfort.

  3. I'm MORE outraged, as I watch January 6 hearings, actually...these are TRUMP'S OWN PEOPLE testifying. Then we have Michael Cohen, a former Trump attorney, Heck, even Pence claims he has faith "the party leadership" will sort itself out. WHERE WERE THEY BEFORE??? Frankly, if you've read anything about the de-nazification of Germany, you know that we are in for a bit more nastiness before the tide turns. Meanwhile, I am working on local campaigns.
Soup--not a fan of most. You mentioned you had never read the TWG Tuna Cheddar Chowder recipe. It is actually like a low cost seafood newburg sans eggs and sherry. Give it a try. It's quick, cheap and easy. Basically, sauteed onions and grated carrots, a roux, broth of your choice, tuna, grated cheese and herbs/seasonings. I could have dinner on the table in 20 minutes, and if I served rolls, I'd have 8 happy people at my dining room table. (And if those rolls were home baked? Whoa, Baby, I was FIRE!) Pets--I love animals. I have 10 cats, a dog, and 3 chickens. DD and I dream of using our farm property for a cow rescue. I told my kids they are free to marry whomever they choose, but they could NEVER approve someone who wasn't kind to animals. (Or rude to waitstaff, or didn't know how they like their steak cooked.)

    1. I just shook my head last week listening to the final day of the broadcast hearing. It seems if those that worshipped him still do, nothing that came out will change their minds. I sure want my kids to find partners that are just that- partners. Respect shows through in all actions.

  4. You and I are so on the same plane politically. I get very angry also. But I just suck it up and try to do right in my own little way as that is all I can do. That soup looks good.

    1. I can't live in anger each day. I will get frustrated, but listening to people make excuses or deny what happened,is happening, I just can't sny more.

  5. SAM, you are my spirit animal. When I heard that Trump was going to run for President I thought, oh dear God, please don't let him win. I live in a deep red state where the election deniers are rampant. However, I believe the election was fair, and the people spoke. I agree about the trickle-down economics failing...it was NEVER going to work. Top economists has proved it. And after watching the Jan 6th hearings, listening to the latest about the classified documents, and now how many of the Trump synchophants are running, I fear for our nation. Okay.. jumping off my soap box. In regards to soup...I'm a big soup in the fall and winter fan.

    1. The joke that turned into a daily reality show. I'm still in disbelief that con men can con at such mass levels. But the Trump fanatics really baffle me- they claim freedom, America first, but then pledge allegiance no matter what to a carnival barker.

  6. Over here Macron's government couldn't get their new budget through so used a rarely used Article (49.3 - or something like that) whereby they pushed it through without anyone in government being able to vote on it. That gave members of parliament 24 hours to call for a dissolution of the government and force Macron to step down. Both the left and the right put through the paperwork to call for dissolution BUT since they refused to work together and individually did not have the numbers to force the dissolution here we go again. They pushed through an unvoted budget and we're still stuck with Macron! Bloody politicians. There are a few good ones but sadly they rarely get very far!

    1. So politicians everywhere are the same. Women need to come, but in mass.

  7. Don't talk to me about politics! No. 10 Downing Street ought to have revolving doors installed! They're in, they're out, they're in/out! In a word, British politics at this moment in time is shambolic. I'm actually terrified for the future of my children and my grandchildren.

  8. I feel ya on not getting sucked in but it's soooo hard for me especially because I am trapped in a red part of a blue state. I am literally surrounded by vulgar flags declaring their allegiances and hatreds. Deep breath, count to ten...

  9. I am a fan of soup and dogs. Soups because they can be delicious, easy, nutritious, comforting and sustaining. Dogs because they can be loving, life affirming, cute, comforting and sustaining. I enjoy to read about the dogs you have in your life. Megan.

    1. The dogs are a blessing, but they also are much more work than I think a lot of people realize. Pup just dies his thing, but even at 11, we have moments. Grandpup is going to be a good dig, but he's learning, testing, growing and a lot of energy.

  10. I'm with you politically: am not going to get sucked into the cesspool. Soups? A huge fan of various bean soups, which I make in quantity then freeze. (But don't serve me potato soup! At least none of the ones I have ever tried.) Pets? Can't have them because of immune system issues. Wish I could.

  11. I talked to the TV lots about the last four years. I did not yell, just spoke up. I listened to all the details and read books. Deep down, I fear another Rep will win.
Soups are great, but I mostly will not soups unless I make them. Between allergies and just don't like, I am picky about ingredients. For instance, I hate green peas but always took them out. Now that i know I am allergic to peas, I refuse to eat soup with peas.

I told my friend Lynda my stance on dogs. If I play with her dog through the chain link fence, I liken that to seeing lions behind their confines in a zoo. I want us on different sides of the fence. I am very sensitive to dogs. They make me itch. In my opinion all dogs stink. When we went to her house last Christmas before she knew all this, she locked her dogs in the bedroom. Works for me.

  12. Politics exasperate me. But soup is great! And so are dogs, and cats! My father was an animal lover and would bring random animals home. Cats, dogs, parrots, turtles, and even an owl and an armadillo once. All rescues, many injured and needing tlc. So I grew up with pets and wouldn't be without one (cat now).

I love soup and would eat it year round, but TheHub is a cool/cold weather only soup guy.

  14. I'm so tired of the politicians, most are just greedy for power and out of touch with the real world where there is so much suffering at the moment. I rarely watch the news now and refuse to get drawn in to the outrage anymore as I can't change it. I'm just focused on enjoying each day with my family. I love soup! eat it all the time in winter and would love to hear about puppy news - pets are part of the family :)

    1. I want to think we can change things but the polarization and power grabbing make following details, calling out bs, hard to get through. These dogs are a major part of my life, definitely family.
