I have been looking at thrift stores but either the styles are all wrong or they are not warm enough, so did the next best thing and layered clearance with discounts. We found a coat, originally $180, for $75 which should do her well for years. It has the highest warmth rating, with a thick hood and styled to go past the butt, though for her height, will go even longer- as she wanted. I found three Christmas gifts (a whole other challenge) as well on clearance, plus a two pack of dish towels that I can pull out for her graduation (while I keep using the old dingy ones for every day), getting my total to exactly 100 before tax, earning me $30 in Kohls cash.
I started 2019 with a self imposed challenge to not buy any new clothing except replacement of undergarments, socks, and tights as necessary. Now that 1/4 of the year is done, I can say I am on track so far. Before Nashville, I bought a 10 pack of no-show socks for DD2. I nabbed three pairs for myself, so a grand total of $2.70 spent, the remaining $5.30 towards DD2's budget. The $30 in Kohls cash will either supplement my undergarment budget, or my daughters $129 clothing balance.
I get that stores like Kohl's have huge mark-ups and then have sales to make it look like people are getting a great deal. Still, I have looked for coats for a couple months now, so feel like if not a great deal, the coat I purchased is a good value. DH shops for himself and just sort of restocks when he needs things. With these two mini challenges, setting aside my daughters new ownership of her clothing budget come fall, I'll significantly reduce the clothing budget for the year by as much as 30%.

I think those challenges are a great strategy. I will follow your lead and not spend any money on clothing and shoes till my big vacation at the end of October. I have plenty to wear so, nothing really gets old. Besides, I am trying to lose weight and have enough clothes to get me going at least two more sizes if not three. (And even then, I can raid my sister's wardrobe:) The only exception will be underwear and that is a very small cost.
ReplyDeleteI thrift all the time and coats are one thing that are difficult to find in my size. The last one I bought I ended up buying from Costco. I think the price you got on that coat was great and even better since it can be used for years, plus you know your girl will be warm and toasty which is super important in a cold weather area like yours.
ReplyDeleteI think the coat buy was great also. I also think your daughter is lucky to be prepared to manage her spending and not look for Mom and Dad to keep her wants funded.
ReplyDeleteI keep clothes forever, but have changed sizes and am only altering a couple of things, so I have tossed nearly every piece of my spring/summer wardrobe. Hopefully I am continuing this downsize journey so I am looking to spend less than 200 bucks for a wardrobe that will do. I may add some additional money for swim suits since mine no longer fit and I do swim nearly every day during the warm weather. I know there are a lot of fine stitchers/bloggers who could easily take in my existing suits, but it is way above my pay grade
I love that coat! Being petite myself, I like the cinching at the waist. When I lived where a warm, butt-covering coat was a necessity, I liked having a drawstring at the waist to cinch in, so I didn't get swallowed up! That's a great price for a coat she will have for years.
