I'm trying to make up savings ground in April. It was time to utilize some of the freebies I've earned through Kohls and Target this past weekend. I had the joy of spending a bit of time with my youngest doing some shopping, but managed to spend very little. Included is some of our finds and other ways I stretched my funds.
- DD2 found a dress on clearance that she really liked and will be perfect for her banquet on Sunday and for future wear. She also found a cute NASA t-shirt, and a light weight spring style sweater-all totaling less than the $30 Kohls cash earned from her coat and gift purchases a couple weeks back.
- We bought thick Gold Toe boot socks for both girls, clearanced at two pairs for $4.20. For the quality, that was an amazing price so I bought four pairs for each, plus a thick and wide winter scarf that matches DD2's new coat. My out of pocket, after another 20% coupon, was $14.08. I thought these would all be put away for fall, but with today's weather, they'll maybe use these now!. Of course DD1 is an adult and buys her own clothing, but she has helped us out so much with pup, I like being able to give her small tokens of appreciation. Nothing says Thank You like toasty warm feet in Minnesota.
- Can you tell I like to shop the clearance racks first? I found myself three pairs of nice quality underwear, plus a white t-shirt for summer layering. I consider it part of the $60 undergarment budget, bringing my now total to $8.62 for the year.
- I tapped into $30 into previously earned Target gift cards and bought splurge treats for the weekend including guacamole and spinach dip, chips, Oreo's and wheat thin crackers. Included in our splurge were three Tresemme products that DD2 likes ( I had bought Pantene the week before) which earned another $5 card back.
- We used $6 left on one of the Starbucks cards given to us by the hotel back in February for bumping our reservation, on a couple ice tea-lemonades. It was nice mom-daughter time-and I still have $30 worth of cards left.
Overall, it was just a usual slow and steady week for savings. I had a few work related expenses that could not be avoided, but those happen from time to time. Still, I manage I'm sure to spend less than most people that work full time outside of the home and have a sometimes "suity" dress code. I save where I can. I'm working from home today due to the winter storm, so that's a day saved in gas. I haven't been able to telework as much as I had hoped in the new year due to too many meetings that needed a physical presence. Today though, I can be as frugal as I want.
I always shop the clearance rack first, and have passed that on to my kids too. It sounds like you've been doing really well finding great scores at Kohl's! And I'm not sure if you know this or not but if you have a Starbucks inside your Target store, you can use a Target gift card there. And if you get just a cup of brewed coffee, like an Americano, you can get it refilled for 50 cents before you leave the store. Just thought I would share :)
ReplyDeleteWhen you are generally only looking for basic, why pay 1 to 2X more for almost the same item? The dress was lucky-not even sure why clearanced already as it definitely is a spring dress, but we'll take it.
DeleteYou have done a fantastic shopping trip! Those prices are amazing. I never get such deep discounts over here so, I am looking forward to my vacation in the US this year.
ReplyDeleteIt helps that she is so tiny. There generally seems to be more options on the extra small and small end of the spectrum.
DeleteGreat deals, especially the socks!
ReplyDeleteI am a sucker for the clearance rack also, and also for buying off season. Right now I am still trying to plug holes in my spring/summer wardrobe.(What am I talking about? no one here has spring clothes) I did a little inventory the other day and the little bit I kept does not really fit is but possibly wearable kind of.
Weird to get so excited about the socks, but when a decent pair alone can run close to $7, it was a find. Good luck with your hole filling.
DeleteGreat prices on new clothing. We have so few clothing options in our town that it is online or thrift store shopping here (we have lots of those). I go for thrift store shopping lol. Yesterday we bought 2 hair dryers (one for me, one for Mom) for a total of $7 - way better than the $60 CAD it would have cost had we bought new.
ReplyDeleteI've had luck at Thrift the last couple years, but am trying to not buy anything for me for quite a while. We have so many options, but I'd like to keep moving form Fast fashion and more basics with better quality. Her stuff is probably not going to last long, but maybe with good care she'll get a year or two.
DeleteGreat deals. You did really well! The first place I go in the grocery store is to the mark down section. 90% of the time, there is nothing of interest. Occasionally, I find amazing deals.
ReplyDeleteOur grocery stores never seem to have mark downs. It must be a different philosophy. We don't even have bread outlets anymore-I miss those.
DeleteI love those kind of shopping trips with my girls. So fun and even better when you don't have to spend a lot of money.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't long-she just does not have the time and neither do I for just wandering and browsing. It was a nice couple hours though.
DeleteGreat deals!!! I hear you guys are getting socked with snow. STAY WARM! Spring is ALMOST here!
ReplyDeleteSo the calendar says, but I'm listening to birds right now that seem to be crabbing just like I am.
