One of my favorite Christmas movies and I am totally serious, is the Muppet's Christmas Carol. I particularly like Kermit song, One More Sleep 'til Christmas. It's sweet, it's catchy, and captures the wonder of the season. The whole movie is so sweet, combing the wonderful Muppet's with human actors, and despite the 27 year old animation, it still works. My kids grew up on this movie, and DD1 and I watched it yesterday.
My favorite "real version" has to be the 1951 Alistair Sims take-he makes a might fine Scrooge. I wonder if Dickens would have thought about his work and the number of adaptations. Of course Hallmark or Lifetime have created modern version of the movie, like It's Christmas Carol, and I'm kind of sappy for that one as well. I guess I can understand how a child who was neglected grew up to be a tightfisted miser, but when showing how his life went so horribly wrong, vows to be a better person. I plan on getting some more Christmas movie watching in this week.
There was a new Hallmark one last night, we enjoyed, called Double Holiday. It was about two co-workers assigned to creating a perfect holiday work party. The planning coincided with Hanukkah and the man somehow maneuvered to participate with the women in her families annual traditions. I was very moved as yesterday was the 2nd anniversary of my friend A's passing, a women who loved and celebrated her Jewish faith with her friends and family. I'd never seen a Hallmark movie that not only included Hanukkah, actually gave appropriate homage.
My hands smell like lemon and garlic as I did a lemon, garlic, and pepper rub t the pork loin. I'm going to sear it on each side soon and then pop it into the crock pot. DS is home to help me with the salmon and DD1 is coming over as well. I have a very messy bathroom, and a few other things to tidy, but my mother-in-law knows I am not the best homemaker, and hopefully she is coming to be with her grandchildren, and not inspect my house. However you celebrate, or even if you choose to bypass any and all celebrations, I hope you enjoy your Sunday. I'll leave you with my favorite green Bob Cratchitt.
It's so weird that you mentioned the Muppets as my friend was saying that she and her family always watch the Muppets sketch of the Swedish chef after dinner (the one with the meatballs) because they all adore it. And I liked the Alistair Simms Scrooge too! Scary stuff!
ReplyDeleteHe has an appearance in this classic. I love the Muppets-always have.
DeleteI like the "three more sleeps til Christmas" as that is how my children best understood time at a certain age. I don't think I have ever seen any Muppet movie, but I will try to catch this. My mil said about me and housework, "At least, you are a good mother." I could have killed her.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's something. I get, "you are a good cook", but doesn't sy the at least part. I don't think she has ever commented on me being a good mother, but never outright criticized me either-more passive nudges. rather get, "when my kids were little, did this, etc." implying she handled whatever situation much better than I did.
DeleteI love the Alistar Sims version of "A Christmas Carol." I also like the 1984 version with George Scott. I used to try to watch as many versions of the story as I could--there's an oooooold musical (I believe the song "Thank You Very Much" came from it) that I haven't seen on television since the early 1970's.
ReplyDeleteI remember, but can't really remember the version with the song, but it was a good one as well. The Sims version was so dark and creepy, and then the light when he first meets Belle, and on the new Christmas day-without special effects, really pulls me into the story.
DeleteI love this post and thank you for sharing the song. I had forgotten how much I like it.
ReplyDeleteKermit is so adorable, and I love the book keeper putting the books back-so darn cute.
DeleteAll right that does it. I have never seen the Muppets version. This is one of my favorite stories too. I keep getting more positive rave reviews on this version it is down for Christmas day viewing.
ReplyDeleteI personally think someone needs to be a real Scrooge to not appreciate the Muppet version. You sir, do not seem as any sort of Scrooge, so I will love to read your thoughts.
DeleteI also like the Kermit song, One More Sleep 'til Christmas. We've been watching Christmas movies as well. We watched one last night recommend by Cheryl over at Cheryl's Frugal Corner. It was called "Love The Coopers". The story about not giving up on family. We have a list of other movies we want to watch this week too. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, Sam.
ReplyDeleteOH-I will look for that one. I am more intrigued with family and friendship movies than the same old love, love, and more move stories where big city execs coe to small town and are wooed by locals. I still watch them, but would rather see others. Another favorite is The Family Stone-but I haven't found it on-line other to buy this year and with the number of streaming services we now subscribe to plus Direct, not going to buy more.
DeleteWe flew $80 worth of Ukrainian sausage back from hubby's home town factory when we were there a few weeks ago - that counts as a holiday expense but will take us into January as well as Christmas isn't the same without it. We eat turkey on Christmas day (free with grocery pts), salmon tonight (not really free but caught in the summer) and perogies (not home made by us but by a Ukrainian Baba in our town who sells them, $5 a dozen). Other than that most ingredients are things we already have. We have red and white wine we make, hubby did buy some vodka (standard Ukrainian liquor lol). Merry Christmas to you and your family!
ReplyDeleteWe were chatting about the Alistair Simm film in the pub yesterday. I've never watched The Muppets so I can't comment on that.
ReplyDeleteThe current BBC adaptation of A Christmas Carol is utterly brilliant, very dark and hanuting. I'm sure it's also available to our American friends, keep an eye out for it.
