Friday Fun-Get to Know My Home State

I could have written this all about the facts and interesting tidbits of my home state, but this article,15 Things People From Minnesota Always Have To Explain To Out Of Towners does one of the more accurate summaries of life in my part of the world. Overall, I like where I live. January and February-well, March and April for that matter, can have me near crazy by the time a little green is starting to show again, but when I'm in the right mind set, I can recognize what I like about the state.

Listening to the impeachment shenanigan's, and they have been that on both sides of the political divide, and I am almost grateful for the partisan government we have in Minnesota. There's a few senators and representatives that should perhaps move on to other pastures, but even if I disagree, for the most part, I think the elected body are decent people that want to do right for the state. While yes, during non-session time, it is not a full, or even a robust part time job, the house and senate will work over a hundred hours a week during session. The pay received, hardly makes someone want to jump into the fray for glory or a life of comfort. Most have businesses, or farms, or children and families, they are trying to manage. So, in honesty, hat's off to state, county, and local elected officials and may they always remember their purpose.

And, speaking of Minnesota places, we have one of the most gorgeous, and open to the public, state capital buildings in the country. There's a connected tunnel system to most of the government buildings, and let me tell you, I have used them on days when where I parked, and where I need to get to are far between. For visitors, now with light rail, a day trip can cover both down towns and the capital without having to maneuver multiple parking spaces, should you not want that hassle.

There are some other gems to explore, even when the weather is cold. I love the Minneapolis Institute of Art. It is not huge, but has some impressive collections. It is a favorite of mine and DD2's for a wander. We all like the Science Museum of Minnesota s well, but I wish they would step up their rotation of Omni theater shows, the same one from October still showing through March. With right outer wear, the county, regional, and state parks are accessible for a hike and some even rent snowshoes or cross country skis. My soup mom friends and I are doing a candlelight hike next Friday.

I decided tomorrow is going to be a home focused day and not get up at crazy o'clock for the show choir event since I am going with DD2 when she is home in March. I feel motivated, and might even get a picture of my kitchen to post. I also want to figure out both the Instapot and air fryer this weekend. I have to fess up that my first attempt at the Instapot resulted in a nasty scald, and I've been a little apprehensive since. DD1 is sure there are some YouTube videos. I found a few recipes for various taco fixings that look delicious. My niece wants a taco bar for her bridal shower so mastering the pot has incentive. Well this post took a meander from the beginning. I'm trying a fake it 'til I make it attitude to end the month, and get through another month of winter. That was my intent with this post. How did I do?

  1. Since we have green in abundance all winter, I would die in Minnesota. I am just not a fan of shoes and socks much less boots! I do admire people with the fortitude to handle winters up North.

Did you get burned by the steam? Have you ever used a pressure cooker? Be careful because a bad scald can scar and lead to infections, which I am positive you know. You did well on the post, interesting to the end.

    1. I'd like to find some where that has true fall, but not deep winter. Meg B has said the Pacific Northwest is like that-so perhaps. I think this is where part of my fondness for the UK and Ireland comes from.

  2. Love your senator Ms Klobuchar. I lived in Iowa for 23 years and Chicago for 7 years and love the Midwest but oh, boy not the winters. I have an air fryer and do use it at least once a week but I actually prefer my slow cooker. I wish I had bought an air fryer/convection oven combo though. I have no desire for the instant pot but I can see how it would be handy for working families. I had a cancellation this AM so have the whole day free. I'm debating going to Aldi but I really don't need food and I'm thinking a trip to BJs Sunday might be a good thing. I have no desire to see the Superbowl even if I could (no live TV) so Sunday might be a good day to shop. My sis bought my membership so no fees there.

    1. Of course now, the parasites will be trying to dig up anything negative to associate with her-they did it in her senate race as well, mean while, let the orange man's history slide. What sort of things do you make in the air fryer? I plan to try chicken wings for the game and maybe sweet potato fries.

  3. Well done, I too am faking it until I make it. The day before yesterday we had 2 hours of sun so we took a 1 hour walk with Buddy - that sure helped. Also same day I had a shopping spree at my favorite thrift. A tank top, capris and a really nice tshirt, earrings and to wine stoppers for $14.40! All Springy colours too. It helped.

    1. Oh a long walk in the sun sounds so wonderful. We may have 40's tomorrow, and if so, I will take pup down town and along the river. The brewery is dog friendly and I don't mind popping in for a quick brew on a Sunday afternoon. I have to go to the post office today, and may stop in the thrift store and see if I can find dress pants and plane colored blouses. My no clothes buying in 2019 was mostly a success other than a t-shirt (which could be considered an under garment), and the socks/undergarments that I budgeted $60 for, and the couldn't pass up $4 brand new, but thrift store bought denim skirt. I was well below my $60 budget-but need bras this year to be sure.

  4. I love all the lakes in Minnesota. The country is just beautiful. Not fond of the Mosquitoes, but the country is lovely. I don't miss the winters.

    1. Those mosquitos can ruin a wonderful night by the fire, but for a perfect day on the lake, can't be it.

  5. My husband told me two Christmases ago that my gift was going to be an InstantPot, but there were none to be found in any of the stores around here. I am glad, because I really don't see how I would want one--I have three different sized slow cookers, and have no need for a pressure cooker...frankly, once I've waited for the pressure to equalize so I can open the lid, I am not sure how an InstantPot would save me any time. I have a pressure canner which I can use for pressure cooking if I so desire, which I don't, because my ovens have almost always all had a delay start function--I can stick, say, a lasagna in the oven before leaving the house at 2 p.m., and program the oven to start at 4 p.m....maybe not ideal in terms of food safety, of course!

    1. Mine was a gift last year form my MIL-my SIL's got one too. The one with four kids swears by hers. I know what you mean-I don't understand yet how long the equalizer takes, and would that save time? I was hoping to try with some dry black beans, rice, chicken and beef for taco bar. I watch BigFamilyLove on YouTube and Tiffany uses hers a lot (she's really a sweet young mom of five)

    2. Well, if you want to cook dry beans, and forget to soak them the night before, pressure cooking is the way to go.

    3. We'll see. Since a gift I want to give it a go.

  6. I love the fact that "a native" knows their own home so well and knows all the best places to see and visit. One of my "regrets" (if I can call it a regret) is that I will never be able to see "everywhere" like a native. Not quite sure how to express that but there are so many places in this world that I want to see and "like a native" has got to be the best way. A Turkish friend organized a 4 day stay in Istanbul for us in 2003 and apart from falling in love with the place, him being from Istanbul was an absolute treat. He knew all the best places to eat, how to hop on the taxi-boats and so on, and then his mom invited us to tea at her home in the hills up above the city and we were there when the sun went down over the Blue Mosque and they had the call to prayer. THAT is one of my abiding life-time memories, but it was only possible for it to be so perfect thanks to Mehmet!

    1. I totally could relate to the Mall of America. All my kids out of town college friends all want to go there, and it is the last place we would choose to actually shop. And now, with an intimate knowledge of the Fargo area, North Dakota, Fargo in particular, is not Minnesota!!! That is what I am looking forward to the most aobut retirement. I figure in off season, we can get an Ari BNB or something short term for a month or so, really explore non touristy things (though of course I'll do both), maybe meet some friendly locals that will give us the real deal. What an experience you had with your friend!
