Festive Progress

We got the snow that was expected but things will clear out thanks to our city, county, and state snow plow crew. Shout outs to DH who tackled our sidewalks and driveway. We have a long and wide driveway and guess who didn't get the snow blower running so it was all shoveling. Not that he complained as he had heard before he went outside about the devastating tornado. If you or family were in that path from Arkansas to Kentucky, I hope you're safe.

DH shoveled early.

The beautiful snow decked pines in our back yard.

I think pup is a husky deep inside. He wanted his walk to go on and on even while I was being pelted with icy snow flakes yesterday. I guess I should have put walk in a snow storm to my festive list and would have easily got that checked. I too got up early and have decent progress, including that refrigerator so ready for a light grocery shop. I'm trying to be planful about space as I'll start having Christmas meal stuff and treats to store. Despite feeling slow momentum this year towards celebrating, I've actually done quite a bit to get my festive mood on.

On December 1, I  made a list of things I wanted my season to include. Here's a few things I can already say I've made merry with.

  • Attend a Christmas concert in addition to my daughter's- I think the highschool band and orchestra collage concert counts.
  • Watch the London YouTube tours if the stores that go all out! Fortnum and Masons, Herrods, Liberty, John Lewis. Give me more ideas please. These are short and a nice unwind. So far I've seen an afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason's and a tour of Herrods food market. Being in London in December is on my wish list just to take it all in. There's more to come the YouTubers promise.
  • Fill my House advent calendar with fun things ( may need to have daughter's play catch up), notes, pictures, poems, tiny ornaments, stickers, just fun things. It needs someone to open the drawers besides me snitching candy.
  • Watch 2-3 classic Christmas movies, plus 1-3 new ones I've got a lot of progress on this already by watching a couple Hallmark I hadn't seen. Kate Winslet's The Holiday for a new classic (2004), and a new to me movie called Happiest Season which was a pleasant surprise. More to come!
  • Finally find and put out my various Christmas blankets for cozy nights The blue afghan above was my mom's. My niece in law gave me a thick XL twin comforter three years ago for Christmas through our gift exchange. So cozy and I've got it out for cuddling for movie nights
  • Light candles  by 4:00 so that they  glow as the sun starts to set This Yankee candle has been my late afternoon indulgence, but DH is not a fan so it's out by 6:00 to disipate the fragrance before he comes home
  • Get my Christmas cards displayed rather than just in a basket Cards are slow coming this year, but mine aren't mailed yet either. Here's my display so far.

It's just little things now but next weekend both girls will be home and I've got just a two day work week leading up to Christmas. In the olden days, the entire month wasn't filled but traditions started just days leading up. I'm doing throw back Christmas, I guess. If DS is able to come home, tickets will be attrocious but I don't care and we'll help. I just am trying to appreciate what the season brings and not be disappointed at what doesn't happen.

    1. Not pictures today. The official estimate in town is 16 inches.

  2. It’s a balmy and damp 62 degrees right now, not much of a Christmas feel to it :) Our high school boys won the 5A championship last night, first ever for the school, in our 50th anniversary year, while my youngest is a senior, my son and I also proud alums, against a big city charter school too cocky to put a kicker on their roster, in overtime. What is life! It’s also the nine year anniversary of my mom’s passing. I have a lot of emotions in me right now, to say the least. I was up early this morning, out to get newspapers to commemorate the win, bought some fundraiser subs from a neighboring school district’s band and did some shopping at Dollar General. Bought Christmas gnome hand towels for the girls at work, some little craftsy things for daughter and boyfriend who will be home on Tuesday for break. They’re still kids in my book and always have fun with whatever they do together, a jingle bell necklace to hang my work keys on, ornaments for my kids stockings and my favorite Kinder snowmen candy. Some light housework before work, I’m expecting a zoo today and I have the two worst employees on my shift tonight. I love them both but one avoids customers like the plague and the other is just completely inept at everything. Sweet kids though lol. Congratulations to your nephew’s team as well! Stay warm and safe today! JoAnn

    1. That's exciting for your town. My nephew's football team in 2001 was part of our community's last state football title. Several on the team were in my first preschool class! 62 is pretty warm for December but I guess we have more warm coming.

  3. No snow here. It was SO humid yesterday and then the cold front came in. Tornadoes last night were a little too close for comfort. Praying for those involved in the devastation.
I've been checking things off of my holiday list as well. A number of them similar to yours.
December thru February have always been months that I slow down the pace quite a bit. I guess you could say it's my hibernation period.
    Enjoy your Saturday.

    1. The weather is so strange and leaves people unprepared. My heart goes out to the people left with damage.

  4. We're digging out again here too. As I looked out my bathroom window this morning my 85 year old neighbour was the first one out there digging yet again - this time digging out the communal parking spots! The man's an absolute ox!

    1. Wow. I hope he gets some help. My dad was like that until his last couple years.

  5. After seeing the damage done by the storms and tornadoes in the Kentucky area, I was grateful to only have a few inches of snow to have to shovel. Husbands snowblower hit a rock and now it needs to be repaired, either by him or the dealer. It's under warranty, but heck of a lot of good that will do if we got a huge dumping of snow. If they've got it right, this week looks like it's going to warm up, yet again. Good luck with the rosettes. I have made them with my mom. She had an antique iron with just the basic pattern, where as I had a new fancy model with 3 pattern options. My iron was crap - aluminum and way too lightweight and didn't conduct heat well. Moms, on the other hand, worked perfectly. Problem was, we could only use her iron and we were hoping to get two irons going at the same time. Regardless, the ones we did get made were a huge success. Haven't done them since and I threw my iron into the garbage. Ranee (MN)

    1. I'm not complaining about snow at all. My rosette's will be made with my MIL's irons from the 60's. If they are a fail, it's me not the irons.

  6. Wow, lots of snow there. I have a lot of family in Mayfield, Kentucky and two of my family members both lost their homes in the tornado. God spared their lives though, so we are grateful. I hope your son gets to come home for Christmas.

    1. My husband would welcome you to our home, shovel in hand to enjoy up close and personal. Of course you grew up with it so no doubt are a snow int expert and moved intentionally away from the stuff.
