Thrifty Thursday- Same Old Thrift

We've splurged a bit on a few experiences, pizza night with family, drinks and music tip jar with friends for two examples. Still, we're living a thrifty life without much thought really. I'm not trying to skimp, though there's not new things we really need to spend. We still want deck/ yard redone and the bathroom redo, but with supply and worker shortages, we might be postponing yet another year. We'll just try to spruce up as we can. Here's a few ways we've practiced natural thrift.

  • With the delayed bathroom, I decided at least a new shower curtain was in order. I found one for 60% off clearance, plus additional 30% making it under $10. It's a nice thick neutral, washable, waffle weave.
  • Used Kohl's cash for a baby and toddler gift, plus a third gift for someone else for a fall birthday.
  • Ate all my lunches at home
  • Made DH a modified fish fry dinner on Friday. Yes it was thrifty, but I more wanted to avoid packed restaurants on Friday nights during lent
  • Free entertainment Friday was The Kings Man starring Ralph Fiennes. It was an ok movie.
  • Made thrifty bean soup- I estimate the whole pot was no more than $2.50. It was delicious.
  • DH was craving ice cream, but when he stopped for it after work, he only rogue shopped and bought a box of 8 cinnamon rolls along with the ice cream. Cheapest rogue shop he's ever done. Now to avoid cinnamon rolls.
  • Used my stash of Fab, Fit, Fun products to make a cute manicure themed gift bag for my sister's birthday gift. Unlike me, she actually takes care of her hands.
Nothing exciting, and practical spending beyond the splurges. It will be a quiet weekend home as we have no plans that I know of. We might head to lake for a day if nice. I've got to get pup in for his spring sedated grooming but I prefer that happen on a week day when I know I'll be home for his recuperating from drugs. It's an ouch financially but necessary. Any wins in your end in the thrift department?

  1. That's great Sam.
It's been a pretty thrifty week here so far too. I haven't been anywhere but work. haha

  2. Those rogue shops can be killer! I try to only grocery shop once a week, but yesterday, I bought a lipgloss when I picked up my lunches for the week, and then added a bag of chips (for L! really!) when I bought milk on the way home.

We've been watching classic movies that we PVR'd over the Christmas season - better than going out to a movie, and definitely cheaper!

    1. I'm a potato chip fiend so keep them out of my house. I'm trying more popcorn for snacking. Low cal and fiber, and perfect for home movie nights.

  3. You're training your hubbie well with his rogue shops! Just a few more sessions and you'll be home and dry!

    1. I give the guy a break sometimes. Ice cream I can resist. Those darn rolls though yell at me when I make a cup of coffee.

  5. You know it is so easy to fall of the cliff from thrifty to cheap. At least for me. But as I age I just realize that we don't go on forever and it is okay to have a few fun times, and not scrimp all the time. Amelia Bedelia, some of my favorite books as a child.

    1. I would hate to be thought of as cheap, but to me that means we are hurting others through our saving money-or time. I guess I should include myself in that definition of cheap. Buying cheap unhealthy food over and over is cheap and not thrifty if it leads to feeling poorly. I think we are of similar minds on this.

  6. I ate a lot of yummy soup this week, and used a couple of gift cards to treat the kids, who are now working (reffing) on weekends.

My splurge is that I bought Sam a few books for his Kindle. He LOVES books (like me), & I can support that. Most of the books he enjoys are not available at our small library.

    1. I am making a pot of soup this morning-another bean, as my daughter can have while her mouth heals up-yet again. I am so hoping this is her last step. I never did use my Dunkin Donuts card and I have some lingering local cards as well. I think I may get myself coffee out tomorrow.

  7. WE're about to see out heating hosts skyrocket, the fuel prices are at an all time high and food prices are creeping up by the day - not much thriftiness in Stonecroft this week! I did have my first haircut of the year,at a student training academy, half the price of my usual salon.
If you can go and see The Phantom of the Open and don't let the fact it's about golf pout you off, it's a wonderfully British, life affirming film. If you don't leave with a big smile on your face I'll be amazed! xxx
