Even though I had back to back short weeks to end June, both were crammed with long days and anxious moments. This is technically a three day week with yesterday being a holiday and the 8th being my flex day. I'm going to try and stay true to my actual schedule and take Friday, but will start work days early and end late. Cherie commented that I sounded exhausted. Mentally, I am. I don't know how my brain can hold much more between work and my personal life. Importantly, I embraced the three day weekend, rested, played, visited, and just left my stress on a shelf. Despite days of crabbiness, I've found 10 joys, simple pleasures, or smiles for the week.
- I got a text from a childhood friend that came across a picture from 4th grade. We were dressed up in patriotic wear. I think it must have been for a 4-H event. It made me smile-the innocent have been cropped out, but here's 10 year old me.
- I was thrilled to learn a full time person got assigned to the redeployment project I got put on. I still have two different audits, but minimally, this keeps 10 hours of time on my schedule, so I shouldn't need to work such long days after mid July.
- It wasn't as hot Friday and to help my mood, I started the day walking pup. Morning walks when no one is around is quite calming. I had my first coffee after on the deck.
- We went out for dinner Friday night. Our younger daughter joined us. We ran into a few friendly acquaintances.
- DH decided he was going to help me by picking up the few things I needed from the grocery store. Reluctantly, I gave him my list. I'm going to ignore that he probably increased what I'd have spent by 40% as it was nice to just be home getting food made for the weekend at my leisure on Saturday morning. I'm going to track our spending in July but this might have tempered his leisure shopping for a bit,so maybe the rest of the month I can belt tighten.
- I mastered a delicious garlic and cummin hummus, made with some of the dried chickpeas I cooked up a few weeks ago. It was loaded with flavored and had a great texture. It really was a simple pleasure. The tahini was pricey, but all other ingredients diet cheap. Recipe used: Easy Hummus
- My sister's party was a good time. She had a good turn out including extended family. The kids battled with water balloons and sprinklers, and ended with a nice fire.
- Sunday was equally nice with good food, swimming and yard games at the lake. My daughter's friend came along and made for a fun day for her. She brought some fresh picked raspberries along.
- As DD1 had to work Monday, we went home by 8:00, so I got a really good night's sleep, once the fireworks were done in the neighborhood. That's not the case at the lake because there's so many people and our room is below the kitchen. I've mentioned his family is loud. The decibels go up when alcohol is added.I was proud of my older daughter leaving Sunday morning since she had been there three days, but got no sleep Saturday night. The chaos when all are here is a lot. She was smart to limit her dose. DH said Sunday night was the same- well after 2:00.
- On route home, we saw several deer, and thankfully they ran back into the woods.
I'm glad to hear you had a nice holiday weekend.
ReplyDeleteI make my hummus the same way only with more garlic and instead of water I use an ice cube. A friend of mine told me that was her secret and I've used it ever since.
I now think it needs a bit more salt and acid. It's still good, but bland. Interesting to use an ice cube.
DeleteSounds like a good weekend! Why don’t you use ear plugs- I always have them for the fourth since I’m such an early riser and need my sleep lol. We had 2 barbecues- my sister and 2 nephews came from Myrtle Beach for a few days. She can be exhausting to be around but we all managed. Food was good and I stuck to my diet- I’m trying to go vegan. I did have 2 pina coladas that were delicious. Nan
ReplyDeleteLiterally, it's like a college frat party some nights with the loudness- I'm not exaggerating. I also don't like the feeling of my ears being plugged. I get dizzy. It's just how things are..
DeleteLove the photo! Super adorable flashback.
ReplyDeleteOur week has been full of ups & downs, but mostly good. I'm happy M & Sam are back from a very long drive, and that Sam, while not feeling great, is okay. Hopefully he will test negative in the next few days, and be able to get out of his room a bit.
We had a very quiet 4th, and made a nice dinner, and just chatted. We were able to set up a table near ours for Sam (we were all outside), so it was good to see him, and for him to be outside a bit as well.
I've given up reading a few sites on the news/politics. It's helped my well being/stress levels quite a bit.
I am struggling to remember the event. I couldn't find my sister in the picture so that confused me. I hope Sam feels ok.
DeleteI fear we are one of those loud families when we are all together. Fortunately the house is big enough that anyone needing a retreat can find one, plus we are all together at best once a year (though it was three years since our last entire family was together before this past week)
ReplyDeleteThere's loud and LOUD. See my comment to Nan. I like a good time as much as anyone but then those tired and hung over expect to have others tip toe around them the next day. It's weird for 40-60+ year olds drinking and partying int the middle of the night. IMHO
DeleteOther than my mother I have not encountered anyone who was in the 4H society. I have no idea what it consisted of. Was it fun?
ReplyDelete4H had rural agriculture roots, but has greatly expanded. It was part of my whole childhood and I have great memories.
DeleteCute picture.
ReplyDeleteTahini is expensive, but it lasts for several batches of hummus.
Rant on. I am all ears!
I'll be holding back. It just gets me more cranky.
DeleteI'm glad you had a good time at the lake and got some rest because Cherie's right - you do sound tired! And I love that picture of you!!! Oh my goodness, if we knew then what we know now!
ReplyDeleteI really am tired. I'm making headway with audit documents. I'll be looking for physical material's Thursday.
DeleteI love the pic! Life has been a mess but I suppose I can still find some good things. A very full weekend included hiking to a waterfall, checking out a local arts festival and free sampling all the wine, moonshine and boozy slushies they had to offer ;) “fishing” at the lake, ie sunbathing and eating snacks. DD’s boyfriend passed his accounting final and finished with a low B, which gives me some hope that he’ll have his head in the right place next month. I wish he would have also taken accounting 2 but that’s not really my place to say so I keep my mouth shut. Not much, but it’s something! JoAnn
ReplyDeleteLife does get messy some times, and I'm sorry you're dealing with so much. Maybe this year her BF will be more prepared. College is a big change and adjustment. The booze art fair sounds fun.
DeleteI love that photo of you!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping you get some rest and relaxation soon, that loud party can't have helped.
I make hummus with peanut butter rather than tahini - way cheaper! xxx
Monday was very relaxing. I had a productive Tuesday too, so maybe life will settle. I've read PB works in place of tahini. Next batch I'll try it.
