I bought myself a small bunch of flowers. It was nice having flowers just because, and not sad flowers. I'm looking forward to farmers markets and the flower stalls.
I bought three small hyacinth plants. I'm going to put them around the mail box, plus a little mound of chipped wood mulch to clean it up a bit. Do hyacinth's come back, particularly the ones you buy bulb sprouting already like these?
I'll get a few flowers for my flower tins that sit on my porch, but not a lot this year. I want to save the money and put towards more fall bulbs, and just buy myself small bunches of cut when I want to color. I can move the vases inside or out.

Great idea Sam. I love cut flowers (in particular) but all flowers generally, and I'm sure they'll provide you with great pleasure!

DeleteSo glad you got a treat for yourself! The flowers are lovely, and I think hyacinths smell wonderful. I've had success replanting the bulbs; mine bloom the next year or two.

DeleteI always plant my hyacinths outside after I've grown them for the house, and they do well. Those I planted out at the allotment have been spectacular for a number of years, and seem to have multiplied. I'll put pictures on my blog for you xx

DeleteSo lovely! I’ve planted lots of hyacinth bulbs outside, and they do come back! Just let the leaves die down on their own, that’s what gives the bulbs nutrition for next year. DeleteFor whatever reason, indoor flowers don't do much for me, but I fully support you treating yourself! On the flip side, I love it when our yard is in full bloom, like it is right now. Even better, I love when I can see herbs & veggies growing. That is bliss to me. I love spring!

DeleteTreating yourself is so worth it. It love indoor, and outdoor, flowers. A small bouquet on the dining table or a few buds in a small vase on the kitchen windowsill always brightens the day.

DeleteI love hyacinths, but have never had any. Your hosta have probably peeped above the round. I treat them roughly and divide them with a knife or shovel before they are full height. I have divided them before they are three inches high. They will survive whatever you do to them. I grew them in pots as well as in ground. Those look pretty in pots. I always think I will grow flowers for cutting, but I never have.

DeleteBeautiful flowers! Every now and then I find a marked down bouquet and pick one up for myself but sams club flowers have become my go-to gift lately. I have no luck with planting bulbs. I think our soil is just bad. We do have Day Lilies that thrive here though. JoAnn

DeleteYes the hyacinths will grow back. When the blooms are spent, let the greens dry naturally. Once they are all brown, remove them. Bring up the bulb, brush the soil off and put in a brown paper sack. In fall after first frost, plant them outside. (Dutch girl here and got to follow Mom's orders every spring and fall ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip. So every spring, we need to dig up bulbs and dry them out, or just this first time? I can't see myself remembering or having the patience for that. We had tulips inherited from prior owner, at our first little house. They just burst through each spring.
DeleteI keep forgetting how far north you are and how cold it is there. I here all this about digging up bulbs and drying them. That is something I would never do because I would forget or procrastinate. So, I will stick to things that want to come up. The hosta in pots on a porch are beautiful. They add a lushness or so it seems to me. Yes, I am a hosta fan. And, the front of the house is too hot for them sitting against a brick house with nothing to mitigate the blazing summer afternoons. And, I cannot get into or see the backyard from the house. I always like the photos of your plantings.

That's a great way to keep him present. I was given some money specifically for purchasing a memorial of some sort. I'm at a loss what's fitting that will give us comfort. It's still too unreal to me. We'll talk soon.

ReplyDeleteI’m in Canada and I have hyacinths. I don’t dig them up and they come back. I’ve had some specialty tulips that have come up for about 5 years but not this year. I also plant alliums, they are bulbs that keep coming back every year like a tulip. Amazing unique long stemmed full head alliums. Try giant species if you can find them, you can plant in the fall and they are a wonderful green plant that comes up now:)
