Feeling Good Friday-Keeping at It

Oh, November. You like to wear me down and beat me up. I have been battling a cold for a week. This is the runny nose, fluid filled headache inducing type cold. My five health goals for the week were a challenge due to wanting to grab extra sleep, trying to use up groceries on hand, and general business, but I did keep them front of mind.

  1. Get the simple white flour pastas, bread, and rice off my plate.
  2. Drink 16 ounces of water to and from work each day. Eliminate caffeine after noon.
  3. Wind down without electronics before going to bed.
  4. Start my morning with 10 minutes of quiet meditation/reflection.
  5. Despite the cold, bundle up, walk at least two extra blocks.
I did well with drinking water and decreasing, if not eliminating caffeine after noon. I'm out of ground coffee, though I have a whole bag of beans that DD2 brought back from Costa Rica. My grinder is loud, so I've just been getting by with tea. With my cold, something about tea feels  comforting so I've been having a cup at night as well, which didn't seem to interrupt my sleep. I did well getting the quiet time each morning. What a difference it makes before getting on  busy highways and freeways for my commute.

My meals had too much white-pasta twice, crackers and the heels of bread in my makeshift lunches. I ate too much sugar as well. I think every bit of leftover Halloween candy might be gone from my house and the office bowls. Thanksgiving and Christmas haven't been big candy holidays in the office, so little temptation for sneaking pieces here and there like I've been doing. Focusing on my meals and snacks will be an ongoing effort.

Three of the walks with pup were a bit longer and we both feel good once we are home. I need to keep that mindset when I'm thinking of ending early. I still was on my computer too late, either watching something or doing work, so like my diet, my electronic detox  needs to be a focus.

My weight seems to have stabilized in a less than happy place for me-four pounds more than my previous weight loss. Being more successful at the items above should help me knock a few pounds off by the end of the year without too much effort. Remind me of this in the comments please. I'm frustrated at myself because I was doing so well, and I alone let bad habits creep in. How did you do on your health goals this week

  1. Perhaps you are trying to change too many things at once? Focus means just that, focus on one area/item at a time. Make something a habit then tackle another one. Hydration, better eating, caffeine reduction, meditation and walking are all large changes in one's lifestyle. And trying to do all that in what is
a month you are NOT on the best of terms with to boot?! Be kinder to yourself and bite off smaller goals maybe? Just a thought.

I am down 15 lbs. now since Spring and am working on the next 5 lbs. Am hoping to get that 5 gone by December. (I've got a LOT more weight than you or most people to lose so this is but a drop in the bucket really but I'm heading in the proper direction.)
I am NOT even going to try reducing in Dec. as I don't want to set myself up for failure. ;-)

    1. Oh, most likely, but I find if I have lots of targets, I'm sure to hit one! congrats on your weight loss and improved health. I've been cleaning like mad today, up and down stairs, moving furniture, so I should get to December feeling like a cookie or two is just rewards.

  2. You are doing great. I realize how much better I sleep when I read before bed vs electronics. When I run out of library books, I go back to electronics, & it makes such a difference (not in a good way) in the quality of my sleep.

For me this week, after my comment to you, I did manage to run at the soccer game as planned, and then hiked on Sunday, went to the gym once this week, and walked for 45 minutes at work. Also, no sweets, which is my big downfall. I'm still working on increasing my fruits & veggies.

    1. That's great that you could fit the run in when you are at the boys events anyway. There is so much down time, so make good use of it. I often went for walks when I used to drive her places, still do now at the show choir when possible, but they are mid winter so pretty chilly walks.

  3. #&#&# what the scale says. I haven't stepped on one in over 20 years unless at the Doctor's office, and then, I step on backwards. You are not defined by a number.
Crappy health week here. Had decided before summer started to only serve wine on the weekend, but have had a few glasses during the week these past two weeks, as they are short school weeks. Eldest DS had been cooking the dinners, and pouring the wine for DH and me. It'd be rude to refuse, don't you think?

    1. You are right, but for me, it is a good indication of when I have let my bad habits back in. Wow, a personal chef and sommelier-of course you cannot turn down such luxury treatment. That is really sweet.

  4. Wow, you're impressive!!! I am defined by my scale number. For some reason, I feel slender and more fit if it's below a certain number. I know I'm not supposed to be defined by it, but if it could drop another 10-20 pounds, that would even be better! Working on it...

    1. As I said to Meg, the numbers give me signs-good or bad! I am not going for slender, but healthy would be a great thing.
