My sincere sympathies for anyone living in states or countries and are experiencing weather that has been too much for your power systems and road care. We've had over a week of multiple digit negatives at night, biting wind shields, and day time highs barely reaching 0F, but our infrastructure is made for these winters. Sure, we'll all grouse, but its rare to lose power, but the black ice can create havoc on our roads as well, so there are sanding trucks even when there is not snow and ice. I pray it is resolved for you all soon and stay safe. I've stayed snug-having been grocery shopping and a few other pick-ups last Wednesday. I've only ventured out for Pup's walks. The last two days we were at 7 and 9 and the sun was out and it felt nice in comparison. This weekend we are above freezing, so the thaw, snow, rain, freeze, and thaw again dance of approaching spring in Minnesota begins. With going no where, I've had to make the most of my time, resources, and money in my own home. Here's my thrifty recap.
- I spent several hours looking through and marking with post it notes recipes I want to try from both the cookbook my son gave me, and the cookbook that my youngest daughter got from her grandma. She'll take it to her first real home rather than a dorm room, along with a couple others I've tucked on my shelf for her. I've been in a cooking rut and hope to find some things to jazz up our dinner table.
- My older daughter stopped briefly after work on Tuesday. She showed me a couple photos of the dog they cared for on her weekend, and picked up a package she had delivered to my house as she wasn't sure when it would arrive. She didn't stay for dinner, but it was nice to see her in person.
- Had a text conversation with my son and a text and quick phone call with the youngest. I'm doing pretty well with the empty nest, and it helps to know my kids still want or at least are willing to keep in touch.
- I baked Valentines cupcakes and cut out paper hearts, just because I wanted a little cheer. DH brought cupcakes to his mom and she appreciated them.
- Made use of items I already had, foot and face masks, deep hair conditioner, to pamper myself a bit on Monday. I had to work quite a bit of the day despite it being a holiday, but the self care helped make it feel like a day off.
Resources
- I didn't have a no waste week-found black beans lingering in the refrigerator, but that was the only casualty.
- Made a successful crockpot soup/stew concoction with broth from the Thanksgiving Turkey, bits of leftover and new vegetables, already cooked chicken, and the remaining cup or so of pasta in a box. We both ate well for supper Saturday, and then I had a portion for lunch on Monday, and froze another. Using up so many remnants made this a very resourceful meal that was tasty and comforting on such a cold night.
- We made use of leftovers for Tuesday dinner, and 1/2 batch of chili from freezer for last nights dinner. I think on the Living Simply Facebook group Carol refers to these freezer meals as assets. It sure was nice to have a meal ready to pull out of the freezer.
- DD2 had wanted Berry Cheerios when she was home, but didn't finish the box. I was in a cereal mood Sunday mid-morning, and thankfully, she had closed the bag tightly when she last ate them in early January and they were still fresh. (we have a waste problem with cereal going stale before the box is finished)
- Another lurker, a cup of oatmeal from the last box, but needed space for the new cylinder. It was too much for one meal (my late breakfast/lunch, but I cooked it all and saved for myself on another day, and as little treats for pup. He loves oatmeal, but we only give him a round tablespoon or so at a time.,
- Redeemed Microsoft points for another $5 gift card
- Didn't drive anywhere for the week, Friday to today, saving gas and wear and tear
- No Valentines gifts for each other in the commercial sense but, I made a nice dinner and used construction paper I had for the heart decorations. DH cleared the snow, at home and at his mom's, then made us both cups of tea mid afternoon.
- With it being so cold on Monday, my daughter and I didn't get take out coffee-she actually wanted to stay home after she had been gone all weekend, and her early morning trip to work out at her gym. So while I didn't get to hang out, we saved money on not getting coffee out.
- The house insurance and umbrella policy was due last month. DH had paid by credit card so we get the points. The Visa is due a the end of the month, so DH will transfer to our main account, from the account we use to make monthly deposits for annual and semi-annual expenses. We started this after we paid off the mortgage, so minimally we put 1/12th of our property taxes and insurance each month. Also, when we paid off a car in 2012, we made payments to ourselves in this account, and have not stopped doing so, even though we make our current no interest car payment from our regular cash flow. DH gets a monthly car allowance that covers the bulk of that payment, which will be paid off by the time he retires.
I was looking at the temperatures your way the other day and you must be so thankful that your State can deal with such extreme temperatures. I remember getting down to about -15°C a couple of years ago and how damn cold that was - and we can pretty much deal with the snow and the cold too. How dreadful it must be in the places that aren't used to it/can't handle it.
ReplyDeleteI mean we'll joke about seeing Minnesotans on Texas beaches when the Texans are wearing parkas, but this weather is no joke and so hard. If you read Two Men and Farm he has had a couple posts.
DeleteIt has warmed up here to 43 and feels much better than the lower 20s we had earlier in the week. No problems here like others in Texas are experiencing. My heart breaks for them.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were able to see your daughter this week. It's so nice that your children want to spend time with you. I am grateful mine does with me too.
I would stay homes in this cold weather too even without the pandemic. Schools has been closed here this week due to the snow and ice, so I wouldn't have been working anyway.
Glad you had a good week.
It's like 21 wants to pick a new challenge! 43 sounds good to me.
DeleteI lived in Texas for a good many years. Hated it. The REASON that Minnesota does not lose power in the cold is because it hasn't shamelessly deregulated and privatized its power grid, had it overseen by Republicans, and foolishly failed to winterize in order to save the cronies money. (Which it would have had to do had it been regulated.) Love how the Republicans are blaming this on the "Green New Deal," something which hasn't even been enacted yet, fyi. Over 80% of the power on the Texas Grid is natural gas. Those pipes froze. Some things should not be privatized. Utilities are one of them. Texans, you bet on the wrong horse.
ReplyDeleteI just want those that can dedicate resources to fix it, do in a hurry. Utilities should be parallel to public health but we've seen where that is too.
DeleteGlad you are doing ok and that you haven't had any outages.
ReplyDeleteWe had an ice storm last weekend with power outage for over 30 hours. But we were better prepared than those folks in Texas. We had another ice storm last night with an inch of sleet, and the trees are so pretty with the ice coating, but I'm hoping we don't lose power again. I'm sooo ready for spring.
I hope for the best for you too. Spring will come.
DeleteWhat's going on in Texas is just horrible! Sounds like you had a good week Sam. We are both very lucky to have grown children that are good about keeping in touch and spending time with us. Sorry about the beans, I know you hate wasting as much as I do. Next time if you don't already have a plan to use them the next day throw them right in the freezer and add them to your freezer stock list. I left the two chicken recipe links on yesterday's post. Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteI had planned to use, just forgot and then they were pushed back. I saw the links-Thank you!
DeleteIt is so nice when adult kids still want to keep in touch, even more so in the pandemic. My step kids are good about that both by phone, zoom and texts with both of us. We are homebodies so the pandemic hasn't affected us as much as others. With my illness I wish I could see my friends more even for a walk but right now that isn't possible so we stay in touch via the phone or texts. Oatmeal is also good in meatloaf fyi :)
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I use oatmeal in meatloaf and it is a nice addition. Kbowing my kids like us is a good feeling.
DeleteThe way you marked Valentines sounds lovely. I made a dessert for us to have with our meal for a change. Arilx
ReplyDeleteSolly, but I got a smile out of him.
DeleteThe footage of the disaster in the south is stunning. So many people losing lives, property, homes. It’s been annoying and gross here but the temps aren’t really anything out of the ordinary despite the high snow totals. Another week of home, work and groceries for me, though I might go to the Dollar Tree tomorrow for fun. I’ve been killing it with my cash back apps, scoring tons of free stuff like frozen veggies, instant mashed potatoes, yogurt, pickles, soup. I’ve stuck to my meal plans and continue to use things up. I made those Pillsbury cookies and tried the recipe on the back for homemade icing, using up the last of an open bag of powdered sugar, a bag of frozen peppers and onions went into chili and I’ll thaw out some hot dogs to serve with it tomorrow. My only waste was a little hummus that molded. JoAnn
ReplyDeleteWe had hotdogs with our chili too, and it was delicious. I hope Texas has a warm up and help fixing the power issues soon.
DeleteMy niece that I am very close to lives in Austin Texas. They were without power until this morning, and now they don't have water. It's a mess there. My furnace malfunctioned and was barely keeping my house at 50 F since the weekend! Had to wait for parts, finally got it fixed yesterday. Im just grateful it didn't totally fail. Enjoy the warmer weather. Celie.
ReplyDeleteBeing grateful for 50 is a good perspective, but that is cold.
DeleteWe have not had any hardships at all and the house is warm and dry. Today, Thursday, we were both eager to get out late in the afternoon since it has been four days since I have even looked out the door, and he has only gone to mailbox and washing machine.
ReplyDeleteAfter a day, even if cold and rainy I'd have had to get out. I don't like being cooped up inside for too long.
DeleteDo you think the pandemic has actually saved you money, becasue you get to work from home?
ReplyDeleteWell, there's saved, meaning not spending, and saved, meaning putting money in the bank. Yes, I am spending less on day to day living, like gas, wear and tear on the car, getting take out coffee and occasional work lunches and coffee with friends and colleagues. We also haven't However, quite a few few things are impacting our overall cash flow and savings. Utilities are a bit higher as I am using more water, heat and electricity. We had to upgrade Internet to accommodate working from home-and it still is spotty on some days. We will not get any income increase this year, but health care went up 8% out of pocket, and prescriptions are $2 more. My husband is paid on commission, so his income is down compared to last year at this same time. Last year we netted less in savings than I had set as a target heading into Januarys 2020. All will hinge on what happens the next six months or so.
