Thrifty Thursday...I'm Trying Edition

Did I mention DH has been in a big old lull at work? His earnings have been less than wonderful, and we will be tight for the next few months. My savings goal is pretty much just a pipe dream at this point. On the bright side, I'm having some thrifty wins, despite expensive life needs still cropping up. OK-some are not life needs but wants and I appreciate ways to get a few of those added to the mix in frugal ways.

  • I join rewards clubs at various restaurants. Green Mill, even though we go there very rarely, still sends perks like last week a coupon for a free large two topping pizza with a minimum of $10 purchase. We brought half the pizza and wings home for lunch the next day. DH and I enjoyed a frugal date night.
  • DD1 and I had a free cup of coffee (though left a tip) at Dunn Brothers on Saturday for national Coffee day.
  • She and I both also got a cup of free coffee on Tuesday at Holiday. I think free coffee Tuesday goes through the month and I'll time my fill ups to take advantage of this.
  • Maybe not a need, but I only have two pairs of jeans that fit me, and one is an unattractive style plus too long, and the other were always on the long and large side (except once first out of the dryer). With losing a few pounds, they are just too big now. I found a 50% tag at Salvation Army making a pair of capris jeans $4, and a brand new pair, from Target donations, for $8. $12 for two new and like new jeans was a win.
  • I ordered my Christmas cards with a vacation photo of the five of us, plus return labels with a 60% off coupon code. now I have all fall to address them and write individual notes to people. It was a thrifty move for saving time as I could do online, and can fit in the task over a long period of time.
  • While we are now linked for another two years to our current plan (which has been a good fit for us), both DH and DD1 got phone upgrades for two for one to replace dying phones. I found very inexpensive cases online to protect the phones. I decided to make due with my own since I also have a work cell phone.
  • We also converted to a cell phone line for the home phone, saving $40 a month on our bill going forward.
  • We're not going on a $15,000 vacation next year. (This was just to put things in perspective for me when looking at our savings balance.)
How did you do this past week with the deals? Do you have any fantastic wins to share? I hope to recap my budget tonight to see just how far from goal we are. then I'll reread these thrifty wins and remind myself it is a balancing act.

  1. Nothing big on our side. We're evaluating how much we've spent in 2018, so we can adjust our 2019 budgets. We've had some . . . overages.

    1. Overages can get a person down or mitivate. Good luck with October.

  2. It all sounds like you're doing fantastically Sam on the thrifty front. We found a half priced leg of lamb at date in the supermarket reduced fridge. Normally I don't buy it because it's too expensive and I've drastically cut back the amount of meat I buy and eat, but this is my husband's favourite and it was too good a chance to pass up. Arilx

    1. Groceries just keep going up. That's a big win for something he'll really enjoy.

  3. Wow, big scores on the jeans and the Christmas cards, good for you! I got some name-brand exercise shoes at Goodwill this week, just in time because my old ones were falling apart, and I used a coupon like you did for Christmas card supplies . . . but your coupon was better.:-)

    1. I'm finally looking second hand first and for Online coupon codes before buying most seasonal things. The savings help.
