To Black Friday Shop or Not

Sunday's paper had some sneak previews. Nothing jumped out at me. Tomorrow morning the Thursday paper will continue the ad blitz, though more and more shopping seems to be happening on Thanksgiving. Sadly, the day after holiday bonus day has turned into nothing more than a spending frenzy for so many, rather than the old nostalgic start of the Christmas preparatory season as I remembered from my childhood/youth. We would shop, my mom and sisters, at a few out of town areas that had more selection. We didn't have Targets or Walmart's and driving 20 miles away was a shopping event. We went to stores like Sears and Montgomery Wards, and a few not around anymore that I don't even remember the names of in East or West St Paul. We'd all compare our good deals, but end by about 1:00 for a girls lunch. Some might venture out again. those with young children might give a respite to spouses or sitters. Later we might all meet up again, with husbands and friends for happy hour some where.

One of my go to stores, Kohl's has early bird specials starting at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday through 1:00 Friday. That is totally nuts to me. I know that first responders, hospitals, and even gas stations need to be open on national holidays. I can even understand a grocery store being open the morning of Thanksgiving. I remember the store I worked at in high school being open until 1:00 for those last minute forgotten items. I volunteered to work both years I was employed there-it was actually a part of the holiday fun, being able to help someone out that rushed in on a panic, so relieved we were open. Restaurants also providing options for a meal for those with no place to go, but often either opened late or closed early, doing just one round of a meal. The workers in these areas are taking care of need, or near needs. Retails shops in the name of just creating a shopping frenzy, no thank you.

This year I'd like to make sure I have joy in holiday shopping-not just a mad dash for the best deals and lowest prices. I know I'll miss out on bargains and some gifts that would otherwise be unaffordable, but I'm OK with that. I have my budget and ideas for the people I have on my list, none of who really need a thing. DS might be the exception as his budget is pretty tight and a few of my gifts will check off a couple needs in the clothing department. Because the girls and I have the day off, we may head out later, after the crowds settle. I may peruse the on-line sites and see if any of my ideas are available. I intend to do some local shopping on small business Saturday, November 24th, in our  down town. I will be shopping, a bit on Friday, but I can't say I'll be doing Black Friday shopping. You may love the hoopla with the official start of the shopping season. Some people are waiting to make that big ticket purchase for themselves or their home. If it works for them, it doesn't matter to my life. I'm just musing on what I won't be doing. If you're planning to shop early and score some deals, what items are you hoping to find?

  1. DH and I typically venture to Rite Aid (over the bridge, as we say) after the bird gets put in the oven. I will buy their bottled water, a gift card for DD, and get the freebies. I don't know how it became our tradition to do that, but it did. I saw the Joann fabric ad, and think there may be a good deal or two, but the nearest is 25 miles away. IF DH and I are up early on Friday, we may sneak out there if the mood strikes. There are a few items that would be nice to have, but nothing we need, particularly with our move on the horizon. I don't fall victim to the "Black Friday" hype. My friend who is an assistant store manager at a big-name box store laughs about it. She says it is for people who are too naïve (my word, not hers) to find better deals with less crowds at other times. Sure, the thought of DH and I sneaking out in the wee hours with a thermos of coffee is appealing, but the mania dismays me.

    1. You could still sneak out-that sounds like a good idea and find a quiet place for your coffee.

  2. I am so grateful that Black Friday hasn't found much traction here in Canada. I am also happy to report that I bought a lot of gifts while in Scotland so I don't have much shopping left to do :) Yahoo!

  3. Black Friday for me means to cook, clean and visit with family. No time to shop and usually no money for it. This year, I am going to make as many gifts as possible. So the rush will be elsewhere...

  4. I did the black Friday once and never again. I will hit Rite Aid for stocking stuffers but that is it.

  5. I never go to the sales. I can't think of anything I want badly enough to go out in that sweaty hell. Sadly Black Friday has made its way over here (to Switzerland at least) but I'm not sure there will be crowds pushing and shoving - it's just a bunch of hype. However, I do need a new computer as this one is dying and I want to equip myself with a semi-decent set-up for when I retire as I think I wouldn't mind doing a bit of freelance work. A friend (in IT) has picked out some stuff for me and I will check the price of it online on Friday but I will order it anyway in the end. If it's cheaper so much the better, if not, so be it!

  6. Just a 3.5 day weekend for me, it will be in the 60's and I plan to putter in the yard, play with the pups, watch football, grill steak, hang with hubs if he's not working. Can't pass up this weather for CO....I worked in retail for 30 years and will never be a part of the BF frenzy.

  7. I'm with Patti. I will probably be working in the yard if the weather is nice. I too worked in retail back in the 80s. I had nightmares for many years about working Black Friday, Christmas Eve and also dealing with returns after the holiday. It was ugly. I bought my co-workers each a pair of cozy slipper socks, I'm getting my daughter a few little things for her stocking, and I will be making cookies for my neighbors. Hubby and I don't exchange, nor do we with our siblings so the holiday is pretty easy for us. We watch the madness from the sidelines and shake our heads.

    1. Madness observed from sidelines is pretty smart.
